“Brilliant views but allow time for only a short visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

We visited Thale on a day's excursion from our base in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The town of Thale is not particularly attractive, especially considering the likes of the nearby Quedlinburg, but is quite pleasant and based around a sculpture and carving-filled park. There is reasonable parking here (€3 per day) and it is a short walk to the cable car and chairlift, with Eiscafes for refreshments before the drive home.

The cable car offers fantastic views of the gorge and the plain to the North and is not excessively expensive. The route passes over some picturesque rocky outcrops; a couple of viewpoints near the top station allow for some good photo opportunities. Having experienced some very run-down areas of the Harz on our trip we were pleased to see that everything appeared very well looked after!

The top of the gorge is quite intensely touristy, which is a shame considering the natural beauty that is otherwise abundant. We did not go to the tierpark as it seemed overpriced (€7 pp when there is a free one near our home) but we couldn't resist a tandem trip on the rodelbahn / bob bahn (a tobogan on rails). This was extremely good fun and worth the price (€2.50 each).

Ignoring the oppressive quantities of tourist tat we completed a quick circuit of the remaining sights and aimed for the walk back to the car. The remains of a Saxon wall (but little information) and a couple of stages, one indoor and one outdoor, comprised the remainder of the attractions at the top but as there was nothing much going on we headed off quite quickly. The steep walk down is very pleasant, if a little hard on the knees, and took us back to our starting point.

The Hexentanzplatz was certainly in a better state of health than some of the other tourist areas in the Harz. Our visit was much shorter than we'd anticipated but was reasonable value for money and the views were certainly worth it. If you can tolerate the overly-cheesy and witch-heavy side of things it is worth a visit for a couple of hours.

“Very expensive”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

I went in high season, by accident, as I was seeking the views and not the amusement park. You discover that you can't exit immediately without paying a Euro 3.5 fee (with no signs in English as to how to get the ticket). Had I driven up a side road, I would have found free parking for the walks, but there are no signs for this area. The theme park is cheap tat, though the toboggan ride might be quite fun. Very busy when I was there, so some must like it. I was very glad to escape. Take the cable car if you are going - at least enjoy the views!

“don't expect too much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Some good statues, nothing as far as I could see about the history, just alot of tat shops and cafe/restaurants. Good little toboggan run and a small tier park there too. A few good look outs and what I thought was a museum was half a dozen pictures in a very ornate carved building.

“Over rated.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We went here for a day trip by bus from Wernigerode, pretty ride and easy to find the Cable Car. However on arriving at the top we wondered what all the fuss is about, just a tourist trap with loads of tat, model witches and more model witches - oh and lots of touristy food. Yes, the views are very nice over the Bode valley and area, then and a good 40min walk down, if were in the area again we would stay at Thale level and do the walks from there. Thale tourist office is almost by the bus/train station, worth a pop in there to get bearings and details - very helpful staff.

“Busy place but a good day trip, Easy on train.”

Walk up the gorge or take the cable car up one side or the chair lift up the other. Also get the folklore of the area
