“Great Haphazard Castle - Take Pictures”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

Marksburg Castle was a favorite for us. The architecture is haphazard and charming. You turn a a corner and you have no idea if you'll go into another room, a hallway, a staircase (going up, then down) or a window that does not look outside because more castle was added on making the window redundant. Our favorite part was the privy right behind the king's chair in the dining room. Apparently they never shut the privy door during meals or BMs. Classy. The tour was in English and our guide was excellent. They have two planned English tours every day at noon and 4pm. The view was spectacular over the Rhine. And the best part - YOU CAN TAKE ALL THE PICTURES YOU WANT. Hot damn. We loved it all, including the torture chamber. I would visit again.

“A step into the past.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Absolutely a must when touring German castles. We were fortunate to have been warned to wear good walking shoes. The hike up into the castle over cobblestones is challenging, but gives you an idea how the horses and residents made it up into the castle. The tour walked you through the rooms that contained beautiful antiques. We were surprised about the minimalism of daily life. We went in an off tourist season, so it was a very pleasant tour. Loved the original furniture and black smith shop. My great grandfather was a black smith so it was interesting to see the tools original to the castle.

Beautiful from the outside and from the road, once inside you really get the sense of the minimalism of daily life. We failed to check tour times and had to do a tour in German. We thought this a little odd, since there were 5 Americans, 3 Brits, And one German couple. Usually a tourist site will offer a tour in the language of the largest group. But not here. We managed as our German is not bad.

“Worth seeing if you are in the area.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

From the parking lot it is a hike up stairs to the castle signs point to where you buy tickets and where you meet for the tour.

There are two English tours per day noon and 4pm

We did the noon tour it was very crowded.

You can take photos inside the castle unlike some of the other castles. Although out of all the castles we saw this was our least favorite.

Marksburg is definitely not a 'fairytale' castle.....more of a working man's castle!
It is a small castle with lots of rough stone flooring and walls and fantastic views from the windows. Well worth the walk up the steep pathway. Having a great guide always helps to make the visit worthwhile.
