We were taken to Marksburg Castle as part of a Viking River Cruise excursion. Apparently the Castle has the distinction of never being destroyed by enemy or war. However, the pathways have been destroyed by time and neglect. Viking did warn us that the tour had walking difficulties, which didn't bother us, but many of the other passengers had a horrible time navigating the extremely uneven walkways that included many many potholes! There are numerous unlit and very steep staircases which are extremely dangerous for people with walking disabilities. One staircase in particular comes up from the wine cellar and it is almost pitch black! I had to use the flashlight app on my iPhone to help the other passengers maneuver without falling! The guides offer no assistance and ours seemed annoyed when some in our group took longer to navigate their treacherous paths! The location is beautiful and the view of the river from the Castle is amazing. Sadly, none of this will matter if you fall and break a hip!
Tip - Kids will love this place. Lots of cool cannons and castle memorabilia. If you require a cane to help you walk; skip this castle!
