I'll say more about Landsberg separately...it is very well located for arrivng by train, renting a car and visiting the abbeys and Wittelsbach castles in this part of Bavaria. Hotel Goggl (Cockerel) is the place to stay in the center of town. The owner has a 'thing' for chickens and images of them are everywhere--even carved into the heads of the beds. Most examples are really charming. We did not find our room to be at all 'dated' but, other than that, we agree with most reviewers that the hotel was spotlessly kept and was staffed by friendly and helpful people, many of whom speak English as a second language and some of whom speak German as a third language. We stayed for several days here, including over a weekend, since this was our home base for visiting the attractions I mentioned above. Except for Sunday morning, breakfasts featured abundant choices of good quality items. It helps to read the 'fine print' on the menu since that promises that eggs can be offered with any breakfast--fried, scrambled, even, I believe, an omelette. Our room was spacious enough for two and the bathrooms were all that could be hoped for. The hotel has its own garage, accessed via a street behind the property and the hotel has a rear entrance for customers using the garage. Speaking of access, this is a hotel where their are shops flanking the entrance on the ground floor and where reception is one floor up. Upper rooms can be accessed via a modernn elevator but the stairs are very manageable. We found our room, which was on the street, to be quiet enough even with the windows open at night.
