“Enjoyable Stay at Hotel Bayerischer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

The rooms are spacious and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I got the feeling of a proper German Villa at the lake. It took me back 40 years in history. Parking is available at the hotel and the train station is 100 meters from the hotel. Restaurants and shops are also close by.

We were looking for accomodations for Octoberfest when we came across this nicely restored hotel. The room was large with high ceilings giving it even a roomier feeling. You can tell this is a very old building form the ornate exterior to the thick walls on the lower levels. Parking is free and it's right around the corner from the Hotel. The parking in the front is not for the Hotel. It's located a short walk from the S-bahn for easy access around Munich and from the airport.

Across the street the is a bakery that it looked like the pasteries were purchased for breakfast which is included with the room. I would say it would be considered a very nice continental breakfast compared to what you would get in the states including medium boiled eggs which seemed to be a breakfast staple in Germany. All in all very good and convenient.

Also across the street is Lake Starnberg. A large lake which we could see from our room. I enjoyed sitting next to the lake early in the morning watching the sunrise with a coffee from the bakery right there. You can see the foothills of the Alps from there, a great way to start the day. There are many shops and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel which makes it nice. I would love to return to this little gem and hope to start a trip to Austria and Switzerland from there when I get the chance.

We stayed here for 5 nights back in July and found it very good for the price. We weren't expecting a 5 star hotel but the hotel itself is very clean and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Our room itself was exceptionally clean and very spacious. We had a window on the lake side. The breakfast in the mornings did the job and was also good for the price. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area as it is very reasonably priced and the rooms are spacious and clean.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2010

My husband and I went on a two week trip to Europe and Lake Starnberg/Munich was first on our list. We took the train directly from the Munich airport, had one transfer and got off the train in Lake Starnberg and had less than a 5 minute walk to our hotel, Hotel Bayerischer Hof Starnberg. We were tired after a long day/night of traveling and were excited to be ‘home’ at this hotel for 3 nights during Oktoberfest. Reception was fine, the rooms were standard and what we expected based on all opinions. Our room had a small balcony which we enjoyed the view of the lake from. We walked around Starnberg in the evening and found a place to have dinner and a drink just a short distance away. Another evening we strolled along the lake and even though it was October and most lake-side restaurants were closed down, we still enjoyed the scenery.
The breakfast was exactly as described with cheeses/meats/croissants/jams/jellies and cereal. All of this was great with us even though there was no hot food, we weren’t disappointed. We were tired enough to not be distracted by the close proximity to the train. Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Lake Starnberg and would recommend this hotel as a great place to rest your head.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2008

Stayed there for three nights in December’08.

Had the König Ludwig II Suite, a large penthouse room with two big balconies. Sadly these balconies are of no use in December, but I could imagine that during summertime they are a great addition. Suite had only a single room but that was a big one, including for example a table for four and another table with sofas for five people. A very large bathroom with a combined shower/bath has a separate “dressing table section”. Whole bathroom was covered with carpet which I though was quite an interesting choice… TV set was actually quite funny, haven’t seen a 14 inch TV in a hotel room for quite some time! Nice touch was the telescope in the room for viewing e.g. the Alps that were visible in the background. Other nice features were the multiple images of König Ludwig II (i.e. the former Bavarian King) and the roof where wooden beams were visible.

Have to say that the breakfast was a disappointment, I was expecting more of Bavarian items such as weisswurst etc but basically the selection included only non hot items such as cheese and cold cuts.

Railway runs very close to the hotel, in fact sometime you could feel the house shaking a bit when train went by. And you certainly could hear it very well.

Location is central, right next to Starnberg S-Bahn railway station. Hotel has a Greek restaurant, next door is bar/kebab place. Pizza Hut & couple of Italian restaurants nearby. Hotel is close to the Starnberger See but there’s still a road and railway between the lake and the hotel, so it’s not a lakeside hotel as such.

From the outside place is looking great, but that’s not quite the case inside. It’s been some years since the last renovation. No major issues as such, but many places could use a lick of paint etc. Though on the positive side it has to be said that the very squeaky floor boards in the room as well as in the corridors surely manage to add a level of historical charm :-)

Is this a bad hotel? No it’s not, you just have to adjust your expectations a bit. I.e. not expecting to have a modern hotel room with up to date equipment, but rather a traditional Bavarian smallish place with a bit of historical character. König Ludwig II Suite was quite a sight on its own! Another fact is that you can get quite a lot of room with a quite a small amount of money (120 Euros for the suite in December’08). This is not a five star experience but on the other hand it is not a dump either. Three stars from me.

Would I return there? Yeah I could do that if I ever will be in Starnberg again, but probably would look for other options too.

  • Liked — Traditional style, unique suite
  • Disliked — Some overall renovations could be in place

The "Hof" is pretty much a two-star place which is adequate. The plus side is a decent breakfast, near the train station (3-minutes walking), and a good bed. The place is clean and most everything works as advertised. There is a Greek restaurant next door which is fairly decent. Down the street are two chicky-micky places which are ok for a beer. The negative I had was the open window, which was necessary in July, and the street/train noise which continues until midnight, and then picks back up at 0530. In the winter, with the window closed, its no problem. If you like a cheaper price and the use of the train station, then accept the situation and make use of the hotel. The staff are decent and speak some English.

  • Liked — Near train station.
  • Disliked — Too loud from street and train station.
