“Good Service, Fruit, Dessert, Limited Creativity”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014 via mobile

We had dinner here on an ideal evening. The service was warm and helpful, but the menu seem to be limited. The highlights were the best cantaloupe we had ever tasted with the melon and jambon, and the desserts. The main courses were of good quality but unimaginative. The ratatouille tasted of dried spices. I don't know, maybe that is traditional, but I use fresh at home.

“Food is reasonable but ambience is cold”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

We were disappointed to learn that the le Bistrot had changed hands last Autumn 2013, as it had been our favourite restaurant to eat at in Lourmarin. We nevertheless decided to try it, as its location is a good one from which to view the Boules court in the evening and look at the comings and goings at the Chateau. A specific table was requested during the day when we reserved but not kept, but that mattered little as unfortunately, to avoid the sun (!), the restaurant placed umbrellas around its entire edge as if to defend us from some hostile entity, in the process corralling us and preventing us and the other guests from any view other than ourselves. The food was reasonable, tasty, even generous, but this was damaged by the lack of any ambience. Instead we found the restaurant to be cold and unwelcoming, in part a result of the young male head waiter whose stiff and haughty attitude was at odds with the warm and usually friendly spirit of the south of france that we so much love. We could have been anywhere and wished we were elsewhere. Sadly for us Le Bistrot is now a pale reflection of the fun, friendly and warm establishment it used to be. We miss it and its former owner. Perhaps in time it will improve, but for us there are better options, La Recreation next door for example.

“Above average for the region, but not up with the best.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

We tried the Bistrot for the first time during our July trip, and were pleasantly surprised. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was a little more relaxed than some of the more crowded restaurants in Lourmarin. A typically Provencal assiette to start, we followed with lamb and dourade, both very pleasing, plus nice desserts.

Le Recreation opposite used to be our favourite sensibly priced restaurant in the village, but while it has slipped in the past year, the Bistrot has jumped ahead.

Sadly I have not experienced the "real provence" in Lourmarin - the sort of place with a choice of only 2 dishes, take it or leave it, each prepared to absolute perfection, but the Bistrot is worth another visit.

“Everyone in our group loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

Huge salads with shaved parmesan was a hit. Salmon was outstanding, several friends commented. Relaxing outside dining. It was just a great place to sit, talk, enjoy the day. Large umbrellas available. A good "rest stop" too.

“Not worth the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2014

Le Bistro recently changed owners. We spend a month in Lourmarin each year and were hopeful that the bistro might be better than it was the prior management. Unfortunately, not much has changed. The service is a little better and perhaps friendlier but the food is still average at best.

The plat du jour on the day we were there was a lamb tangine served over couscous for 17 euros. What we were served was a large bowlful of couscous topped with a very small spoonful of lamb tangine. What there was of the tangine was average at best and the dish was certainly not worth 17 euros. It was a dish which one might expect to be served at lunch in a café for about 9 euros. The green salad was generous but the greens were not crisp and there was much too much garlic.

There are two indoor seating areas plus outdoor tables. The setting and décor is pleasant and the restaurant has a good location in the village. We really wanted to enjoy our meal at Le Bistro, but we did not so we will not be returning.
