Set alongside a small lake in the Ardennes, Auberge du Lac is certainly picturesque and it makes the most of its location.
To call itself a hotel, is stretching the imagination somewhat! It's a restaurant with a few, very mediocre B&B standard rooms.
As for the rooms....they are certainly not worth the 100€ charged in the off-season of May, in fact the adjacent Hotels charge 40-60 euros, which is far more realistic.
The rooms are quaint but not good. My room didn't have an en-suite lavatory and the shower/washing facilities were an after thought, tucked behind an out of character partition wall. My colleague was luckier, and had an en suite, but considering I paid the same as him, it was a pretty poor show. The room without facilities should have been MUCH cheaper.
The main reason Auberge du Lac exists is, the restaurant. It is a vegetarians nightmare! Focussing on a pretty large bar be cue the menu was "meat any way you want it" and not only was the meat very good, the quantity was verging on the obscene! It was meat to feed an army!
I had a T Bone steak, which was excellent and a very good bottle of Haut Medoc ( not my first choice). My colleague had a very thin Fish Soup (at 17 euros) and a two inch thick Filet Steak which was very good
Two requests were not available.... Asparagus (although its peak season) and Bone Marrow (although they were serving vast quantities of fresh meat) .... Strange?
However, and its a big however, the prices are extortionate and the quality of the food falls very short. The owner is, at best, cavalier with his charging. I found out that I ordered a 29 euro bottle of wine and it was substituted with a 39 euro bottle, without informing me of the difference in price! My starter was six BBQ prawns, all of the small variety, and to be charged 18 euros really didn't impress me.
In summary, eat at Auberge du Lac if you want to over indulge, over pay and go over board, but there are plenty, plenty better in the area.
But definitely give the rooms a miss, the Ardennes has so much better to offer.
