“Good value compared to competition, good location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2008

I was met on the road nearby by the owner (an English guy I think - Dave?) and he offered to show me over. I have been to almost every province in Thailand (and Vietnam) and I think the previous criticism is too severe.

Sure, it is budget accomodation, but it is much better than some of the places my friends stayed at - with mattresses on the floor and ancient noisy fans. And the price was cheaper - 300 baht off season (at the time).

It is close to all the action but far enough away so you can sleep in peace. I actually thought the location was very quiet and I enjoyed the experience.

We had never been to Koh Samet before, and didn't understand that many people who go do not make reservations in advance and that there are many properties that operate on a first-come first-serve basis.
So, we scoured the internet for places that took reservations. Since we were going in the high season, we ended up with either 1) expensive places out of our price range 2)well-reviewed affordable places that were full or 3)The Lost Resort. The Lost Resort had a favorable description in a couple of obscure places (wikitravel, a two-year-old travel blog) so we thought it would probably be just fine.
Well, we arrive, follow the owner's directions to the place and find that although it was advertised as being "quiet and away from the noisy beach" it was instead on this inland road that was traveled at all hours by noisy motorcycles and trucks. Also, it was old, very shabby, and basically looked like a nasty motel on the inside. It looked like the kind of room popular with drug addicts and hookers--stained walls, ancient creaky bed, dim, yellow lights. The sheets were threadbare and patterned, and the towels were navy blue. This may not sound like a big deal, but if you're using colored or patterned linens, it's much harder to tell how clean they are. We spent the first few hours trying to find somewhere else to stay, but to no avail, everywhere else was already booked. Luckily we were only there for two nights. The breakfast served at the hotel was nothing special, and much better food was available at the beach. Next time we know better. Also, I suspect that the positive information I found online was either severely out-dated or created by the owner since he has the advantage of being a native English speaker whereas many of the other places in Koh Samet are Thai-owned.
