“Resort that needs re-sorting in Hotel Category”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago NEW

Since I've stayed in guesthouses and huts along the beach before, I was disappointed with this one considering that it is a resort. We had a Superior room. The sheets were stained, pillow case torn, and there's no duvet/comforter/blanket that defines "resort". It felt like staying in one of the cheap 500Baht guesthouse than this 2,400Baht Superior room. WI-FI is not free. They hand out a piece of paper for 50 Baht with Username and P/W.

The American breakfast needs some more food element in it. There wasn't fresh milk...aaww

The location is great though because it's along the beach, convenient stores, transportation rentals, and seafood restaurant.

Room Tip: Try the mini-suite rooms.

This place needs a complete makeover including the staff..very lazy houskeepers never bothered to sweep the front porch the 3 days I stayed plenty already written here about the rooms..but its a great location. I prefer this beach to the main beach (saiw keaw)and arrive there by boat. (Wangdean). Have a look around, there is far better

This place needs some serious TLC.

Bad points -

1. Room is mouldy and damp. I don't think our air con has ever been serviced because the smell coming out was awful & there was a leak so bad half of the bottom of the unit was rusty and worn away.

2. Breakfast is cold and so is dinner (why we had dinner there when the breakfast is bad I dont know?)

3. You pay 50baht a day to use WIFI but this only works near reception & gets shut off at 8pm when reception closes.

4. Pool wasn't cleaned from the leaves and bugs.

5. You won't know who the staff are, randoms sit around in places staff should be but they aren't officials.

6. I think this has formed a rep as being a dive because some of the rooms had Thai prostitutes in with customers. Customers who left the door open!! Not a nice place for families.

7. There was 43 of us staying here, not one of us enjoyed it. Enough said.

Good points -

1. Right on the beach and it has deck chairs you can use.

If you're not in the picky traveler and want a cheap place to stay, this is for you. My family and I lived in Thailand for four years and rented a "family room" for five the first year and a villa for the next three. I would not recommend the family room unless you like being packed in like a bunch of sardines. Unless you pay for a VIP Suite or rent the entire villa like we did, your power may be cut during the day as a cost savings measure ... But who goes to an island with the beach just to stay in the hotel room? The beach and beach chairs were adequate and there's a small restaurant located nearby. Don't expect to find many people who can speak English, as the main visitors seem to be European and Russian (unless you count the old retired men with the young Thai wives or girlfriends). You can either take a boat to the main dock and then travel by Baht bus to the resort (and I use that word loosely), or you can take the Malibu boat directly to the beach. If you elect to take the bus, bring dust masks and cash to pay the park fee (when you take the ferry to the beach park fee is included) and remember... Always negotiate the price for your trip before you get in the bus (well back of the pickup truck actually). The bus trip is not recommended for anyone with a bad back .. However you do get a chance to see the island and the other hotels and resorts that make the Malibu looked like a paradise. At least the Malibu actually has a beach and not just a bunch of rocks to stub your toes on. Go with an open mind and a willingness to just relax no matter what. Thai people are always friendly and willing to help you as long as you tip well and always smile. If you have a problem or need help in anyway, you will get absolutely nowhere if you are angry or shouting. Everything is negotiable.

Room Tip: Pay the extra price for a VIP room or, if you have a larger group, rent the villa. The villa has two...

No, I'm not really joking, the place is that bad.

I stayed here a few years back and my wife and I scrambled to get the hell out as fast as we could. The nitty gritty:

1) Yankee Stadium bleacher seats for you to lounge on in front of your room. Charming (not).

2) Useless, slow-as-molasses cleaning (?) staff that opened our door with the intention to clean, then left for 2 hours to do other rooms while our door was left open, allowing every bug on the island to come in.

3) Mold permeating the wallpaper due to water leaks, grime and mold on the bathroom tiles (it hadn't been scrubbed since... well, ever), zero hot water pressure, no aircon (even though it was promised in the price).

4) The breakfast buffet was a joke

5) My wife at one point left the key at the front desk as we were told to do, but when we asked for it back on our return we were told "it's not here! You didn't give it to us." basically calling us liars. My wife pointed out where it was on the rack and they shrugged and gave it to us with no apology.

6) The remote for our archaic TV didn't work--when we asked for another one, it never came.

7) Their rain-water filled pool is ancient and nobody bothers to clean it, so it's never used.

This place is barely worth 600 baht but they were charging us something like 1600 if memory serves me correctly. Get away. Get far away.

Room Tip: Try another hotel.

This place is fine if you have no other choices. Breakfast is pretty good. TV, air con, and refrigerator were fine.

Swimming pool is right in the sun making the water really warm like a lukewarm jacuzzi. Hot water in the shower only turns on for a split second every minute or two.

The worst thing was the blanket which was a kind of ragged felt with a ribbon around the edge. To be honest we didn't want to touch it so we put it on the floor as a rug. It deserved to be touched only by the soles or our feet.

I first visited Malibu resort about 10 years ago and I wasn't impressed then, the only reason I have returned with my young family is we couldn't find accommodation anywhere else at such short notice.
After a decade the overall resort hasn't changed including the interior décor, there are still small chalet type rooms full of mosquitoes and a rubber sheet on the bed.
The service has unfortunately got worse , we were left to struggle with our two young children and luggage while the resort employee strode ahead empty handed to show us our room.
The breakfast is still the same cold fried eggs and instant coffee .
The beach is a lot worse than I remember, a lot of plastic and general rubbish littering what could be a very nice beach.
A lot of Cambodian workers now in the bars and restaurants who unfortunately neither understand English or Thai.
The fire juggling show outside the Seahorse 2 on the beach at 8pm was very good though but hardly a good reason to endure the rest of the trip.
I wouldn't recommend the Malibu resort garden while there are other hotels and resorts on Samet.
VERY POOR.

Room Tip: Choose another resort !!
