“A great place to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

This was our first trip to Langkawi, a group of islands of the West coast of Malaysia. We read reviews on Trip Adviser about the hotels on the island and we chose the Danna Hotel. This was one of my best decisions ever. The hotel is about 20 minutes drive from the airport and located right next to a beautiful beach. The hotel is large and open plan, there is not that many guest rooms considering the size of the building but from the minute we walked into the hotel I knew we were in for a very pleasant stay. The check-in was very personal, no massive check-in desk, it was fast and as we waited the few minutes for the documentation to be processed we were given a complimentary head and shoulder massage. We were then escorted around the hotel and shown the facilities which were impressive. The guest room was out of this world, large and spacious, the bathroom was also large with a very deep bath which I was delighted with as many hotels claim to have a bath but they are so small they are nothing more than a large shower tray but not here at the Danna hotel. I soaked in the bath every day. The pool area was very well laid out; if you were into swimming for exercise then this was the pool for you. It was suitable for all ages with shallow end and deep pool for the swimmers. The pool service was first class. We had breakfast every morning in the large dining room, the choice of food was excellent including the flutes of champagne to go along with it. Since Langkawi is a duty free island the alcohol was incredibly cheap for a 5 star hotel. We paid the same price for hotel beverages as we would pay in the supermarket in Singapore our home town and that is a bargain. The service overall was excellent, the staff were always ready to help. We had a room overlooking the marina and it was so peaceful. The beach was long with white sand and good for exercise, the hotel also roped off a section of the sea for safe swimming. The gym was well equipped and open all hours. Nearby there were shops and restaurants which served good food at very reasonable prices. If you were going away for a romantic vacation this is definitely the hotel to stay at, there were also a few families as well and everyone was enjoying the sun and the pool. It was a for my wife and I a very enjoyable stay and we intend to return in the near future. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a first class hotel by the beach. Great hotel and great staff.

Room Tip: There are sea views, Marina views and of course mountain views but we always prefer if we have a cho...

The Danna receives such excellent reviews on Trip Advisor that our expectations were really really high when we booked with Trailfinders in UK. Therefore we are puzzled why we feel slightly disappointed at the end of a beautiful 7 night stay.
The hotel and its rooms are wonderful, and extremely comfortable. We were upgraded to Grand Merchant room which has a huge balcony with outside double sofa which is great for reading in the slightly cooler atmosphere than around the pool. Bathroom was huge too with raindrop shower, separate double sized bath tub and his and hers sinks.
It was our wedding anniversary while we were staying and Trailfinders had put this on our reservation document. We received an anniversary cake in our room plus a half Bottle of wine and complementary choice of 3 couple activities: deluxe beach picnic hamper, spa credit for massages or English high tea for 2.

Here are a few small negatives :

Nearly all beach loungers are in the full sun all day, and the sun umbrellas are inadequate for the intensity of the sun the south-facing pool area receives all day. There are no shaded areas within the pool either, and we compare this to other Asian resorts we have been to where clever use of trees and wall-building gives some relief from the unrelenting sun when you are relaxing it he water.

Breakfast buffet became quite repetitive over the 7 days, and the Sushi was not great. However, we cannot fault service in restaurant and coffee choices are extensive and of excellent quality.

The Danna stands next to a relatively new quayside area on the west coast of Malaysia and out of season (as our stay was) the area feels a bit lifeless, especially at night when the quayside restaurants are mostly empty.

The beach at the Danna feels small and was not the stunning location we expected from previous Tripadvisor reviews. We wonder if it is a man made beach, not facing out into wider ocean but towards a smaller inner bay?

In summary, we would certainly recommend The Danna for adults and couples. We perhaps expected too much and set ourselves up for disappointment when we expected this to be the very best Asian hotel we had ever stayed in.

Other tips:
Try dining at Privilege restaurant which is 3 min walk from the Danna. Superb food, modern fusion-style Malaysian/Chinese and fantastic owner who really wants you to have a lovely meal. We had 3 courses each and spent equivalent of £50 in total.

Use local store in quayside complex for cold drinks and nibbles, which are great for your balcony or poolside (diet coke here is 30p a can)

Car hire is very cheap and we would highly recommend venturing around the island for a day or 2. Driving is easy and hassle free. Most sites are free- waterfalls, different beach areas. Parking is free and fuel is cheap. Make sure rental car has air conditioning though as it is really hot and humid!

When visiting cable car, it is worth asking how long the queues are before buying your ticket, as main queues are hidden upstairs and the day we were there it was well over an hour on standard entry ticket costing equivalent £6. Had we known we would have booked fast track ticket costing £10 each but there would have been no queue at all with this. (You cannot upgrade once you have scanned your ticket at the entrance)

Room Tip: Grand merchant rooms are superb and with Tralfinders UK you are upgraded from Merchant to grand merc...

We had an excellent short weekend trip at The Danna. Rooms and hotel facilities and champagne breakfast were top notch. Only downside was the location which was kind of out of the way and also the jellyfish which I suppose can't be blamed on the hotel. Highly recommended!

Dear Drew T,

Your support during your recent short weekend trip is highly appreciated. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and especially liked the room, hotel facilities and the breakfast.

Whilst we note your comment about the hotel location, we hope you also enjoyed the French Riviera-like Telaga Harbour which is next to the hotel as it was built to resemble the Riviera’s Mediterranean-style, as well as the picturesque Andaman Sea with manmade islands and verdant green hills. Thanks to all these natural beauty, with our signature Danna Experience, so far we were able to create a peaceful and relaxing ambience for our guests.

For guests who desire to move around, the hotel can help booking a cab, rented car or limousine. From the hotel, it takes approximately 15 minutes to the Langkawi International Airport or Pantai Cenang, and about 40 minutes to the Kuah Town. The Oriental Village and Cable Car are only 5 minutes away and the Petronas Quay on the south of Telaga Harbour which hosts souvenir stores, a bank equipped with currency exchange facilities, a fast food restaurant and a bakery is within walking distance.

We do realize the jellyfish issue can be worrying, to enable our guests to swim in the sea, we have fixed a swimming net by the beach as a precaution step. For a long term solution, this matter has been highlighted to the Langkawi Development Authority. Meanwhile, we hope our guests are satisfied with our largest infinity pool on the island.

We thank you for staying with us and appreciate your future recommendations Drew T. It was our pleasure having you recently, we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

With best regards,
Pascal Masse

My husband and I had a sport tournament in Kuala Lumpar and needed a place to get away and relax. Several of our friends had been to Langkawi and highly recommended it. We stumbled across The Danna via Trip Advisor and several other websites. From the reviews and pictures it looked like exactly what we needed. From the moment we arrived, the hotel staff were so welcoming and accommodating. We haven't had a chance to celebrate our marriage with a proper honeymoon so this was a mini moon for us and we stayed for 3 nights. The breakfast buffet was amazing and we quite enjoyed it. The pool was wonderful and we really liked happy hour! We definitely would recommend this hotel to friends and we most definitely would return ourselves in the future if we were in Langkawi.

Stayed for only 2 nights due to limited time in Langkawi but accommodation, experience and service were all impeccable. No real cons.

Notable pros:
- Unique hotel style
- Excellent pool area and access to private beach
- Concierge service arranged all island activities via room charge and offered detailed explanation of everything else in Langkawi
- Clear that all staff are well-trained to be highly client/service oriented. Everyone from reception to chef addressed you by name, greeting in corridor, apologetic on very minor mishaps and generally going out of their way to assist. I must note however I went during low season when there was high staff to guest ratio.

Would stay here again if visiting Langkawi and would also recommend.

Dear Olydde,

Thank you for staying with us during your short visit to Langkawi in October and taking the time to write us such a lovely review.

We are glad that you appreciate the hotel’s unique Colonial-Mediterranean style and everything our hosts offered. As we are dedicated to creating the most memorable holiday experience for our guests, we always strive to provide hassle-less services to our guests.

You mentioned about our Concierge services. The reason we are having such services is to ensure our guests get what they need – help and reliable info when they are away at a totally unfamiliar island, and of course, to make the most out of their holiday! This is just part of our brand essence - Danna Experiences, we are very pleased to know that you find our Concierge services worth highlighting.

Once again Olydde, we thank you for giving us an opportunity to show you who we are and a chance to render hospitality to you. We hope to welcome you back to The Danna Langkawi soon and thank you in advance for future recommendation!

Best regards,

Stayed at the Danna for 6 nights in September this year. From the moment we set foot in the place and were greeted with apple juice and a shoulder massage we knew we were in for a real treat. This is a beautiful colonial style hotel with spotlessly clean rooms and exquisitely comfortable beds. The swimming pool area is superb and the breakfast is to "die for". But best of all are the staff for whom nothing is too much trouble, in particular Ingo and Justine who made us feel very special.Would recommend this hotel to anyone and really hope that we will be able to go back again one day.
