Thank you Lorraine for your review. It is very handy being next door to the Hot Springs Motor Lodge, a short stroll and you are there. No need to worry about driving to far at all for a lovely meal.
We look forward to welcoming you back one day soon
Kind regards

“Food matched the staff - boring........”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

We were staying in a motorhome at a nearby van park and were recommended by the park management to dine at this place. So on a cold and wet night we wandered down to this pub/restaurant to walk in and be taken back by how nice and warm the place was decorated. We ordered drinks which were fine and that's about where it ended. The food came out after about 45+ mins - 2 steaks and a lamb dish not overcooked but tough - our daughter picked the winner which was a pie on special for the night. We had ordered the vegetables instead of salad with the mains to find them come out towards the end of the meal with no apology. The prices are quality restaurant prices but the food is below pub quality. So by the time we had our four meals and a couple of drinks I disappointingly paid our bill of around $150. Our waitress was unfriendly, unengaging and to be honest down right miserable. I know this is a small town and the locals are probably looked after pretty well but they need to wake up and realise that Hanmer Springs is a major tourist attraction and they should therefore employ staff who will engage with customers not just brush them off - this might help deflect your attention away from how ordinary the food is. There are plenty of other eating options in the village so I suggest to anyone reading this to try them first. The owners also need to look at their lighting on the way in as there is nothing leading down the front stairs into the place. This was by far the worst dining experience we had during out two week trip to NZ.

Hello Trezoe, thank you for your feedback in regards to your visit to our restaurant when in Hanmer Springs. I was saddened to read that you did not have a good experience on the night you dined, our team are normally very welcoming and care about the customer they look after - as you said we are a small town - so it is always a pleasure to welcome visitors from New Zealand and overseas. Your feedback in regards to lighting has been taken on board and we are addressing this at present with the owners. I hope the remainder of your time in New Zealand was pleasant.
Kind regards

“A surprise splodge of tomato sauce...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

We decided to stop and eat at this venue, as we were staying in the motor lodge.

As others have said - a great looking pub and bistro.

Went for the beef burger- which was delivered with a big, surprise splodge of tomato sauce on the bun- which was not listed in the menu.

For many, this would be fine - but I despise the stuff.

The waitress checked in on our meals, where I stated by displeasure for this surprise splodge- to which she replied 'a disappointing surprise no doubt'. She handled it well, but it would have been nice to have been offered a replacement or at least done reassurance that she would feed this back to the kitchen crew.

Once I removed the offending saucy splodge the remaining burger was quite tasty!

Attention to detail, and knowing the menu are really important in the food business... If the sauce was listed, I'd have known to ask for it to be left off.

Thank you for your review. I was sorry to read that you had a splodge of tomato sauce on your burger that was not shown as being part of the meal component on our menu. Your feedback is welcomed and we have discussed this further with everyone in the kitchen and our wait team.
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in New Zealand
Kind regards

“A tasty dish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

Dined at the Five Stags restaurant and bar as we were staying at the adjacent hot springs motor lodge. The decor is a modern twist on a vintage nz hunting spot and the place was packed with Easter holiday makers and crusaders rugby fans alike. The staff were able to accommodate everyone with ease whether they were there for dining, drinking or to watch the game. We had to wait a little while for our meals but considering the amount of people there it wasn't unreasonable and the staff kept us well informed of the ETA of our meals. I had the arancini balls which were delish followed by the salmon and my parter had the lamb shanks and he also had nothing but high praise. A great spot and we will definitely be back!

Thank you for your lovely review, Easter was incredibly hectic for all the businesses in Hanmer Springs as so many people came to enjoy everything Hanmer has to offer. Our team worked really hard to deliver meals as quickly as possible on a very busy evening - the busiest of the year, so a lovely review online is greatly appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you back one day
