“Very dissapointing”

Tried this place again after hearing a new chef was on board and was very dissapointed.
The service was very unpersonal and aloof.
The food was the real let down though. I ordered a bruschetta for a starter, each slice of bread had half a slice of tomato on it. Had the chicken for a main, which was described as served with prosciutto etc. I was served what I can only describe as a prepackaged Chicken Kiev with a slice of spam or square block, processed, pressed ham stuffed in the middle. It was inedible and quite clearly not the cured ham I was expecting. The chicken was served with a garden salad and a pile of soggy fries.
The steak my partner ordered was barely passable and over priced at $36.
My dessert of berry tart with vanilla ice cream was half a dry pie with stewed fruit, served with some sort of berry ice cream. The other dessert ordered at our table, the creme brulee, was supposed to be served with mango ice cream but came out with vanilla ice cream.
A disaster every step of the way and it is safe to say I will never be back.

“Service with attitude!”

Having read of Cameron Petley’s move from Putararu to the Nash in Cambridge we were looking for an excuse to try his new menu. A visiting friend from London provided this and we headed off with anticipation. Our evening was one of disappointment verging on embarrassment. We arrived at 7.30 on a Saturday night. A time one would expect a popular restaurant to be humming. There were only 13 people there. Not a good sign but it was January so maybe a lot of people were away. Let’s start with the service we were met by our waitress (not sure if I should name her but I’d like to). She showed us to our table and seemed a bit put out that we wanted sparkling mineral water rather than tap. We had to ask about the fish of the day. Then we asked about venison. After seeing Cameron cook it so well on Masterchef and reading his comments in the local paper it was a disappointment not to see it on the menu. Now the slightly simmering attitude problem really came out. ‘Venison is hard to get etc. etc.’ Excuse me! I buy it regularly at the supermarket one block away. New Zealand is a major producer of the stuff.

We probably should have walked out at that stage but didn’t. The menu was pretty ho hum and nothing special..quite a lot of Cameron’s special Madeira jus but not of the flair we had hoped for, and way different from the web site that we checked before booking. It seems a shame that expectations are built up by an attractive menu on the web site and not followed through. Better surely to instill lower expectations and then over deliver.

This is what we had;

Prawn cocktail..straight out of the 70's. Not sure if the sauce was shop bought or not, but it tasted as if it was.
Battered scallops..very greasy and not much different from the fish and chip shop.
Mussels with bacon and onion cream sauce. Good, cream sauce tasty and enough of it.

Fish of the day..snapper. Good but accompanying salad was boringly predictable lettuce, tomato and cucumber.
Pork belly..meat was soft but stringy and lacking in flavour, crackling wasn’t crisp. Vegetables OK except the bok choy which was watery and tough.

Creme Brulee. Very good, warm, smooth and rich underneath with just the right thickness and hardness of the sugar top. The only drawback..no mango ice cream as promised by the menu, just vanilla and we were not told in advance. We ate it but the response was a shrug and a begrudged ‘Sorry’.

So, on balance ;
Food: poor to average and certainly way below expectations.
Service: embarrassing.
Value for money: poor
Recommendation: avoid it.

“Great food”

My husband and I on our way back from tauranga stopped at the NASH for tea,we found the staff very good and the food was delicious,We tossed up weather to have a entree but decided not to I'm glad we did because the mains were big.The wine list was huge good selection of nice wines.
We also had dessert tart with fruit and ice cream it was lovely.
We will be going back and will recommend to others.

“Poor service”

The night started poorly with not enough staff on what should have been forecast to be a busy night. Once we were seated the service was very poor. I am not sure why but it appeared that we had annoyed them some how.

The food was average but the over riding feeling after leaving was disappointment due to the poor service.

“Good food & service with a great atmosphere”

We 6 friends dined for my birthday as were down for the weekend to celebrate. The service was good & the girls/waitresses were attentive and professional. The only downer was two people ordered the pork belly & it was too tough to cut. Unfortunately they both had to send them back. The waitress dealt with this extremely professionally & a different meal was provided fairly quickly along with a drink while waiting. Their meals werent charged for. If this little hiccup hadnt been dealt with so well we wouldnt probably go back. But it was dealt with very well so would highly recommend as all the other meals were quite yummy.
