Topo Gigio is one of our favourite restaurants. Located in The Village in Toorak , it is very central and has lots of interesting shops around that you can window shop in while you walk off a very large and rich meal.
Topo Gigio was once an Italian restaurant named after a much loved Italian cartoon mouse. Now run by brothers Nick and Joe from Lebanon and their lovely daughters it continues the Italian food theme. There is a daily specials board - look out for Nick's special Chocolate Ripple Cake (nothing like you make at home!) and not always on the board - you will need to book in advance and plead for Nick to make it.
The menu has a small range of entrees and a large list of pasta dishes that can be ordered either as an entree or a main course. The portions are large so don't order the pasta as a main unless you are very hungry or have an enormous appetite. If pasta is not your thing, then there is an excellent choice of steak or chicken dishes. Joe in the kitchen will make sure that your steak is cooked to your liking. The main courses come with salad or steamed vegetables of the day. Again, you won't be walking away hungry. The chicken or veal parmigiana is excellent, tender and large. The specials range from lamb shanks to chicken paella and lamb brains and the fish of the day.
You can also have a large serve of garlic or herb bread while waiting for your meal. Nick behind the bar will serve up some excellent cocktails or wine or you can bring your own.
Well, if you still have space, and we do strongly suggest that you try and at least share a dessert you are not spoilt for choice ranging from assorted gelati and tartufo to hot apple strudel, crepes and not to forgotten, excellent chocolate mousse and tiramisu. All served with either cream or ice cream or both. Do you still have room? then Nick will knock up excellent coffee, variety of tea or some thing special.
The clientel are treated like family and it is obvious that many diners are local regulars with whom the lovely waitresses have long and friendly chats.
In summer you can sit outside and enjoy coffee, a cocktail or a meal and people watch or sit inside by the open window
The restaurant is open for lunch (Tues-Sat) and dinner - everyday. The prices are very reasonable and you will definately want to return here.
