We recently ate at Bohio de Luquillo for lunch after visiting the El Yunque Rainforest (self-guided tour, don't pay for the guided ones). When we first drove out to our resort from the airport in San Juan on Sunday, we saw all of the small shops/restaurants where Bohio sits. At ~8pm on Sunday night the place was packed with people, so we thought we'd stop in.
During the day, on a Wednesday, there was nearly no one around this area, but we picked the right place out of the ones that were open. A couple of gentleman at the bar appeared to be Americans, but still locals. One from North Carolina commented on my Kentucky blue shirt and the other was from Arizona. Both were nice, as was our bartender. She was very friendly and helpful with the menu.
We ordered the BBQ pork sandwich and the roasted chicken sandwich. We got potato fries and the plantain fries (not the sweet ones). All four items were very good. Add to that a couple of rounds of $1 Medalla Light cans, and we had a really nice little lunch for about $25. The pork had an interesting BBQ sauce, tasted like a sweet, KY or TN sauce to start and finished with an almost North Carolina mustard flavor at the end. Very interesting, and tasty. The roasted chicken sandwich was good as well.
We also met the owners. The gentleman asked if we had been waited on after we sat at the bar, and immediately got the bartender out of the back for us. The female owner was also very nice and we talked to them for a bit. Overall, this was a great little place to eat. They had a nice selection of food, and the dinner menu, combined with the fact that they have live entertainment through the end of the week and weekend, makes it also seem like a great place to eat at night. We may return before our trip is over, and if not, we would definitely visit again if we were to return to the Fajardo area. We'll give it two dollar signs because dinner is about $15-20 per plate; however, the lunch menu is nearly all <$10. Both very affordable. We sat at the bar; however, other reviews indicate that the back-room indoor seating looks out with a scenic view of the ocean.
