“An oasis, but within reach of everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2006

We stayed here on the last two nights of our week in Puerto Rico. The inn is very well maintained, as are the grounds. Sue and Dick are incredible hosts, and their dogs are quite warm and welcoming, too.
If you are looking for nightlife, this isn't the place--but we weren't by the end of this action-packed trip. That being said, it took us only about 30 minutes to get to the rainforest, and Luquillo Beach was on the way back to the hotel, so we cooled off after our hike in the ocean.
This is the type of place you go to relax, enjoy the sounds of nature, and see beautiful sunrises. Breakfast on the terrace (which featured among other things, great coffee and tiny little bananas grown right there on the grounds) is amazing. You have your choice of a view of the rainforest in the back or a view of the ocean and Vieques straight ahead. And the early morning sounds of roosters and frogs, welcoming the new day, is enough to rejuvenate any tired spirit. You won't be disappointed!

I know this information is old, but after reading the more current reviews I'm sure it is still representative of what you will experience today.

After learning that hotels in SJ wanted over $250 a night, the inn seemed a great bargain ($69 in 2001). Sue & Dick were fantastic hosts, and really "made" our week stay in PR, with their advice on what to do, where to eat, etc. This is more like a mini hotel than what some might expect in a B&B. We would have never eaten at the little local places (unique stands - in a row identified by numbers) but Sue said we would not get sick and she was right. Dick can seem a little gruff, but he's a fun guy and I enjoyed pulling his chain.

We spent most of our time hiking in mountain and relaxing on the beach. It rained some every day, but it quickly blew over and the sun would be out again. Kind of like Hawaii. The climate is perfect, and bugs were not a problem. We never needed the air at night, just a nice breeze off the sea. And the song of tree frogs.

We loved PR away from San Juan, not crowded at all, and we were there in peak season. As for San Juan, it was OK; we spent an interesting day there that was plenty. Don't miss the Bacadardi factory tour (and drinks). We drove there against the advice of our hosts and only got a little lost. Overall we found the people to be friendly, and the ones you are likely to come in contact with speak at least some English. Their currency is US$.

You will have to rent a car, but rates are reasonable and roads are generally good. The inn is a little hard to find, tucked back in a residential area. So you will be navagating some narrow roads, and like everywhere else, some drivers are nuts! Remember, a yellow light means for a PR driver to floor it, even if he's 400' away! Maybe somewhat more so than I am used to here in the midwest.

The breakfasts at the inn were trictly "continental", with breads, fruits and juices, and coffee, but we did not expect a lot for the price. We managed to stuff ourselves unough to make it to an early dinner. Listen to the hosts' dining recommendations! We never ate in San Juan but found great places driving well under an hour south. We ate like royalty for $60, including drinks. At one restaurant the owner's wife was American, and she came out and sat with us a few minutes.

Dick and Sue operate a bar in the main lounge in the evening, (Dick is the bartender) with reasonably priced drinks and a TV (none in the rooms) if you wanted to keep up with the news. Some other guest were friendly, some kept to themselves (there are 9 rooms). Kids were a little noisy at times, but nothing too bad. Their collection of big goofy dogs is a hoot.

The rooms were spartan but clean. My wife thought the matress was too hard, but I liked it. We never saw any bugs.

Bottom line: I considered this an excellent value. If you want luxury, this is definitely not the place for you, but if consider a B&B a place to eat in the morning, get personalized visitor information, and crash at night, this place is outstanding.
