“Wonderfull place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We were a family of three generations from Denmark who stayed at Katamah for two weeks. We enjoyed every minute, and would surely go back! Situated just by the sea, with the sound of the waves to be heard every night... And a lovely, peacefull garden, with lots of possibilitys to be private or to socialize with other guest and with the lovely hosts, Monica and Andrew. very relaxed and yet very helpfull and at hand when needed. This is not a hotel - but it is much nicer! Very homely and beatyfully decorated - just plain nice!

We had wanted to find a get away from my business in Negril for sometime as I was so tired at the end of the season. Found Katamah on the web and it was just perfect for us. Private room, not many people and close to the beach. Within walking distance of restaurants, beach hang outs and some interesting walks. The amazing sea and wild fishing beach, Frenchman's Cove was right in front of Katamah, which has a well equiped patio overlooking the beach. There is also a great communal kitchen & lounging area there too (never open early enough for us though!) Andrew and Monika made us really welcome and I had some nice chats with Monika and Andrew who had the beginnings of growing strawberries & grapes, which I am keen to see progress on sooner than later! Extremely comfortable beds, good quality linens & towels, very creatively furnished, Moroccan style. The bathroom had a great stone tub and the water was HOT, plus the walk in closet was a great addition. Loved Eggy's hangout on the beach and best dinner was Jack Sprats. There is a great little bar across the road which had a an amazing bicycle sound playing on our last night, my husband's birthday and out 12th wedding anniversary, everyone was dancing in the street ... we will be back .. One Love!

Room Tip: Habida was the most private as it was at the end of the villa terrace. All rooms had their own entra...

One word describes Katamah: CHILL. It is one of the most laid back places I have every stayed in. We enjoyed 5 nights there and stayed in the Habibi room, which is the last room, and the farthest from the beach.

The town of Treasure beach is very tiny. I have done a lot of traveling to small villages in Mexico and all over Asia and I generally love finding places off the beaten track. I like authentic experiences where you can experience the culture and overall energy of a place; devoid of big resorts and Americana. There isn't really a "town" here though (no square or center); just a strip of buildings that fronts onto the beach. It was great for 3-4 nights; 5 nights and I was getting a little bit bored as there is literally nothing going on. If you want to read and drink red stripe this is the place; if you want to do anything other than that, even a little bit of going out; you might want to look for something a little bit more happening as Treasure Beach closes down around 9 every night. Seriously.

I am only giving Katamah 3 stars as I think, with a tiny bit of tweaking, it could be truly amazing.

Otherwise it should be said that to really enjoy Katamah one should manage your expectations of what it is. Katamah is not really a hotel, its a proper guest house with a set of 4 guest rooms set back from the beach, about 100-200 ft. There is a beach hut that is ON the beach, which is almost more of a hostel in some ways as there is a shared kitchen, patio and hammock there, which are all communal, but incidentally are also the home of the hosts. So if you are looking for a private room with a beach view this is not the place for you. The rooms are private, but they have no private beach zone area; so if you are picturing yourself sitting on your patio overlooking the (truly gorgeous) beach with the pounding waves you will be disappointed. This is not necessarily clear from the website, so just a heads up that the rooms are well back from the beach and you cannot see/hear the ocean from the rooms.

Having said that if you are social and want to hang out with the other guests you'll love it here. Everyone is super friendly and the locals are respectful and easy going.

Pros: Generally we really enjoyed our stay there; the rooms are very comfortable and the beds are great. The hosts Andrew and Moni are great people and really friendly with lots of recommendations for great food. The guest house is on the BEST beach; lots of sand and amazing swimming and body surfing in the small waves. The staff have the biggest smiles.

Cons; there was no hot water though I think they were working on getting this going. Twice there was no water at all, but this was remedied within 12 hours... still its kind of a bummer when you really want a shower at night and no water comes out and there is no one in sight until the next morning. A mosquito net would have been really really nice as the mosquito's did keep us up a couple nights; a cheap and easy fix. But bring BUG SPRAY if you're prone to getting eaten. Finally I am not sure what was cruising around in the roof but there was definitely some night-time creatures that was making his or her home up there which woke us up on several occasions.... so if you are a light sleeper you might want to consider one of the other rooms.

having said all that we had a great time and really relaxed and loved the beach and the hosts.

Room Tip: i would pick the laila next time as it is the largest, has a queen bed and a couple of day beds, as...

We stayed at Katamah on Treasure Beach for two weeks in March. We chose Treasure Beach because we’d been there 10 years before, and we chose Katamah on the basis of TA reviews.

First, Katamah. We had the Saida room, which lived up to the online photos. It is high ceilinged, with a very comfortable king size bed and a walk-in closet with shelves and rail which was very ample for our clothes and stuff. The windows are fully screened so there’s no need for a mosquito net. The en suite bathroom had its featured ‘Moroccan style hand-made bath tub’ but when we stayed there was no hot water anywhere in the rooms and we didn’t feel like taking a cold tub. But after a day or so we got used to cold or tepid showers anyway, and the outside garden shower was usually warmer (and more fun). It is consistently hot and usually humid in Jamaica so this wasn’t a problem even for washing our hair. However while we were there Andrew was in the process of installing a water heating system for all of the rooms although this hadn’t been completed as we left – if this is still likely to be an issue for you then check first. Sometimes the water pressure dropped – there has been a drought and this part of the island has suffered. There is no AC but there was a large and effective fan which did the job and was quieter than any AC unit would have been. The only noise issue was the beep-beep from occasional traffic on the road as bikes and cars approached a corner. The best noise ‘issue’ was being lulled to sleep by the ocean every night! What made Katamah special for us was the grounds, the closeness of the sea and most of all the people. Andrew and Monika have worked hard to give the whole plot a warm vibe with trees, flowers, carvings, hangings and water features. The gardens are attentively kept up by AJ, and room care and friendliness was provided by Roxanne – a real gem too!

Now to Treasure Beach. Check it out on treasurebeach.net. It really is a great, laid-back, safe and friendly part of the island, with some of the best beaches too. Everyone knows everyone, everyone says hi wherever you go on the street, and they really mean it – the people here are proud of their community. In contrast to the sometimes aggressive pitching by beach or street sellers elsewhere, here it’s done with warmth and if you don’t want to buy – no problem.

The other advantage of Katamah is that it is just 10 minutes’ walk or less to four great places to eat – Smurf’s Cafe to the left, and Frenchman’s Reef, Jakes and Jack Sprat’s to the right. At Smurf’s Dawn and her family do wonderful breakfasts for a rich mix of vacationers and locals. She also roasts her own coffee. Frenchman’s Reef does good food too and Kammy is a peach. Jack Sprat’s does good fish and meat dishes (and pizzas – we didn’t sample) at the water’s edge. Jakes is a chic haven for great food and ambiance, and killer rum punches from Dougie’s bar – an institution for decades.

The final ‘advantage’ of Treasure Beach is that it is a 2 ½ hours’ bumpy ride from Montego Bay Airport - so for purely selfish reasons this may keep the hordes away from this island on an island...

And a tip – if you haven’t got transport arranged, it’s better to get your taxi from Treasure Beach to pick you up at the airport, as they know the road well. One family we met took a ride with a Mo’ Bay taxi driver who said (of course) he knew where Treasure Beach was – but the journey to where they were actually staying took them over 3 ½ hours!

Room Tip: Right now Saida or Laila are probably the best. Laila has a fridge freezer and is the biggest room...

If, like me, you want to get away from the depths of winter and relax at a low-population-density beach house in the tropics, then I highly recommend Katamah. It is without doubt the best location in Frenchman's Bay.

It has a large fenced yard, with the road on one side and the beach on the other. Their accommodation consists of separate small buildings in the centre of the yard, surrounded by flowering trees. The beach house and patio are shared space, including hammocks and beach chairs and a full kitchen. It's run by Moni and Andrew who live in the back part of the beach house. They are both friendly and helpful.

Our room was The Saida, which is in the middle of the bigger building. It had screened widows, a full bathroom and a walk in closet. We drank the tap water all week without incident. We found it very comfortable, but the first night were bothered by a water pump on the roof and small mosquitoes (despite the screened windows). The switch to turn off the water pump is around the back of the building, and the mosquitoes won't bother you if you turn on the provided fan.

There is a small grocery store a few minutes walk from Katamah and many restaurants nearby. I particularly recommend breakfast at Smurfs. Overall we had a great time at Katamah and will definitely be back.

Full details including pictures are on by blog, but as my first review was rejected for containing a url, you'll have to guess the link. If interested, try searching for Holtstrom Jamaica.

This place is a little piece of heaven on earth. I was there for 2 weeks and had the most amazing time. I was fortunate enough to have had my wedding on the second day I was there (which was a total surprise). I couldn't have asked for a better place to do it. It was so perfect and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It will be a yearly tradition from now on. Moni and Andrew were so warm, welcoming and made my wedding day and the rest of my stay so wonderful. They are both so much fun and beyond nice. They make you feel like family and they make it really difficult to leave, pretty sure we all had a tear or two when saying goodbye.
The rooms were beautiful and clean. The kitchen is fully usable and we had a lot of fun cooking for ourselves (if you have a chance, taste some of Andrew's cooking!). It is close to so many delicious restaurants and shops ( I suggest going to the Wild "Turkey" on Wednesday nights!).
I cannot say one bad thing about this place, it is truly the best spot I have ever been.
See you next year!
