“The epitome of tranquility”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

Quite beaches without the beach vendors, wonderful Calabash Bay Villa with beautiful rooms with ensuite bathrooms, full kitchen. Perfect for four couples. Excellent food at Jake's and Jack Sprat restaurants with many local watering holes in a friendly and safe community. A memorable stay.

We spent the past weekend at Jakes and had one of the best weekends of our lives! My wife and another couple went down to Jakes for the triathlon this year. It was very well organized and it's more social than competitive. Everyone encouraging each other.

Then in the evening they had a amateur boxing match Canada vs. Jamaica. Great atmosphere with 1000 people attending including former Heavyweight Champ Lennox Lewis. It was a truly unique vibe and a great experience.

Jason Henzell is one of the best hotel operators in the Caribbean. He and his staff really take care of their guests and share their community vibe with everyone.

Hotel is very friendly with the best customer service I have experienced in the Caribbean. Lots of things to do. We played tennis, swam, biked and explored the community. Great people live in this area and are very friendly with guests.

Rooms are great and very unique. Food was fantastic. Dougies Bar is the best and Jack Sprat is a great beach restaurant.

Just a loving fabolous place. Really makes you feel at home and I long to go back (actually going back in June!).

You'll love this place!

Sincerely,

Karl

Room Tip: Cowrie down is the largest one bedroom unit.

The Great Weather and good vibes really led to the serenity found at Jake's Hotel, Villa & Spa. It is a little out of the way; off the beaten track. The vegetation and landscape is different than most of Jamaica. The People are the Treasure.

We stayed at Jakes for 2 nights and really enjoyed our stay. All the staff are really lovely and they will organise anything you need. We were in Starfish villa with an ocean view. The rooms are quite small but you have a great balcony overlooking the ocean with deck chairs - each villa also has lounge chairs out the front to relax on. Shower was outdoors on the balcony but privacy was fine. You eat around the pool area and our dinner was delicious. I had the lamb and I am quite fussy, most places over cook but this was great. Cocktails were quite potent and not in a good way, I'd stick to beer or wine. There is no place to swim in the ocean out the front but just walk through the grounds and there is a gorgeous beach safe for swimming near Jack Sprat restaurant. Wifi is free and available around the pool area.

After a few days in Negril at one of the "top ten beaches in the world" we (50, 17, 18) were a bit disappointed of the surrounding area of Jake's Hotel. The beach next to Jake's is approximately 10 feet broad and with a barbed wire fence in your back. Jakes Hotel itself...well, it was not our place, no air condition. No windowpane, you hear the waves breaking on the cliff, close to the house and fairly loud all night long. Moskitos, Jakes hotel offers you a moskito net and some chemicals against mosikitos, but they are still there. If you really want to go to Treasure Beach, rent a holiday home but do not waste your money for Jake's Hotel. We felt like on a campground and after 2 days we decided to move back to Negril. The food was good and also some Dolphins swimming in the sea very close to our house was of course an attraction we didn't have in Negril.

Room Tip: We were staying in the cottage Tiki Tiki 2,

We spent 5 glorious days at Jakes in Calabash Villa. And we left feeling like this was a very different and wonderful view of Jamaica. No gates with guards, no people trying to hustle you, able to walk down quiet dirt road safely all by yourself. Everyone who lives around Treasure Beach is very proud of their “community” and that’s the perfect word to describe it. If you go to Jakes be prepared for peace and quiet, some good books, and beautiful surroundings. Not a lot of touristy things to do, which we found a positive. We ate at Jakes restaurant and every night they had a big selection of appetizers and entrees, mostly based on Jamaican dishes. The spa was a beautiful new building where the rooms had only 3 walls because the forth wall is completely open to the ocean – right above the crashing waves. For a good price we got wonderful messages listening to the sound of the waves.

We spent 6 nights at Jakes in March, and feel like we experienced Jamaica for the first time despite prior visits. This hotel isn’t segregated from the countryside. Treasure Beach is a rural fishing village, and you are visiting a neighborhood. We stayed in Calabash Cottage with our 2 kids, 10 and 8. Our front door opened onto a spacious porch, beyond that a garden, beach and the sea. The cottage is off property, and each morning we would trek the 10 minutes to Jakes or Pardy’s for a delicious breakfast.

If you love fresh homemade food, with ingredients that never saw the inside of a freezer, this is the spot. In the morning, men on motorbikes would sell fresh-picked callaloo door to door. The menus changed every night, or you could arrange with a local eatery like Smurfs or Strikeys to prepare what you like. At the restaurant on-site, there were excellent vegetarian dishes and the jerk shrimp at Jack Sprats was amazing.

Jakes is unique, and each room is different. Some, like Cowrie, are filled with charming touches like stained glass and an open-room kitchen. Conch and Coral is another, but it is right off the pool, as is Sweet Lip, another 2 bedroom cottage. Our Cottage had a fairly private outdoor shower with funky tiling.

The best: We met locals, took a visit to a waterfall you can swim in, and found five dolphins with Captain Joseph. We made friends among other guests. This seems a place where friendly and like-minded people congregate. Nothing was rushed. Jakes is totally integrated into the community, and owner Jason Henzell is working on a Sports Park up the road that is a mecca for local soccer and cricket players. The staff was amazing, particularly Grace in the restaurant, Samantha who babysat, Rhonda the resident artist and Damian who maintained the Calabash properties. (There is also a pool in the Villa next door to our cottage). Also, a Rock N Roll Hall of Famer came by for dinner our first night.

Also notable: The Driftwood Spa had an amazing view and the scented oils were top notch. Even the library was well-stocked with books on everything from Jamaican birds to the The Help.

The not-so-great: The mosquitoes will find you, but the bites weren’t as itchy as those in the states. But the bigger issue was the expense. We weren’t expecting an all-inclusive, but breakfast was usually $50. The transport to the falls was $90. Our daily expenses in addition to the room were $200-$300 a day. We felt better knowing the money was going into the local economy rather than a multinational chain. I would advise you to keep track of your receipts if you are staying a while. Or, make better use of your kitchen than we did or off property restaurants that don’t add the 10% tax and 10% gratuity into the bill. (We always tipped more.)

The upshot: We met people who return year after year despite the 2+ hour drive through the mountains to get there. I will recommend it to anyone who will stand still long enough to listen. We will likely return again, but not before investigating ways to make it less of a strain on our finances.

Room Tip: We stayed in the off-property Calabash Cottage, which had it's own private beach. There is no be...
