“Fabulous - we'll be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

Travelled with family members - 7 of us in all - including 4 young adults and grandmother. Everyone had a wonderful, relaxing time. I was worried that the young adults (18 - 23) would be bored during the 3 day/2 night stay, but they hung out and had a good time. 18YO commented that of the 3 places that we stayed at during this trip, Jake's was the best!

Arrival - checking in was smooth and the fruit sorbets that were offered were all very good. A nice treat! Everyone was very helpful - they opened up a side gate to allow us to bring the van close to the cottage to make unloading much easier (7 people's worth of luggage!)

Stayed in Mussels - 3 bedroom cottage - photos on the web are deceiving. I was worried that we would not have a lot of space, but this was not the case. The bedrooms are all a very nice size and the bathrooms are very large....the (private) outdoor shower was a very nice addition.....we all tried it at some point during the stay.....being able to shower outside, under the moon/stars was a wonderful treat. My husband really liked the upstairs deck for his exercise routines....especially the view of the sea. The backporch and the deck overlooking the water were very nice, quiet places for just relaxing, reading and resting.

Mussels has a kitchen, so we prepared breakfast there and ate at both Jack Sprat's (tried the legendary pizza - yes it was very good!) and Jake's Country Cuisine for lunches and dinner. Food in both places was very good.....everything was fresh and a lot of it is grown locally.

Staff - I cannot say enough about the staff.....everyone was warm, friendly and helpful.....one of the "kids" broke out in a rash so when I asked for directions to the closest pharmacy, the lady at the front desk got a bottle of antihistamine for me and said we could use what we needed.....so no need to go hunting for it!

If you like to lie on a beach all day...then this is not the place to do that....I myself really like the beach, but there were enough lounge chairs around the pool that I really did not miss the beach. There is a small beach by Jack Sprat's Restuarant, but when the tide comes in, there is no more sand! There is another beach further down and you need to climb over some (small) rocks to get there.....but for us, lying by the pool was more than sufficient. Besides, the bar is close to the pool, and the bar provided a place to meet people and chat!

Spa - son, daughther and I had massages at the spa....very nice cool breeze coming in off the sea and the sound of the waves below made for a very relaxing time! Hubby and I went for the yoga class one morning...what a treat....the view from on top of the spa building - looking out to sea - was undeniably a big contributor in the overall relaxed, well-being feeling......

Internet access is available in the lobby/restaurant/pool area and you can use a computer there if you do not bring one.

Room Tip: Mussels is a 3 bedroom cottage setup for 6 people. However, we got a rollaway to accommodate our 7t...

My wife and I loved our stay at Jake's.

Our intention for this trip was to take it easy and rest, so the quality and the atmosphere of the hotel mattered to us. Jake's turned out to be an exquisitely quirky place, with soothing vibes, tasteful artistic decor and excellent service. The offseason atmosphere was perfect for us and we loved our "Abalone up" room, where we rested listening to the lullaby of the waves.

The hotel is enshrined on rocks in front of the sea, and guests seemed to enjoy keeping private, save for the odd polite interaction. In a sense, Jake's seems like a haven at the end of the world, where simple sophistication is enjoyed by travelers seeking rest for their souls.

The Treasure Beach is (fortunately) not much developed, and if you travel there offseason the possibilities for eating elsewhere than Jake's or their outlet on the beach are pretty slim. The food was good and prepared attentively, but not very varied: after a few days we would have liked to try something different.

The nearby Frenchmans Bay is a great sandy beach for swimming quietly and enjoy the warmth of the sea.

We wholeheartedly recommend Jake's.

We spent 3 nights at Jakes after 3 nights all inclusive near ocho Rios
Completely different experiences but Jakes is so fantastic I would go back there at the first opportunity. We had a 2 bed cottage next to the restaurant and pool - time slows down here - so relaxing watching the waves and the sunsets on our verandah. Food fantastic at Jakes and Jack Sprats. Beaches not the best but everything else makes up - lovely to walk trhough the village to the shops in the morning before it gets too hot. YS falls Black River and the river trips (go on a small independent boat) well worth doing.
The spa is perfect in a tropical garden open to the breezes and all staff in spa and hotel really great. Can't wait to go back

We went for a five day get-away and loved everything about Jake's! The rooms that opened to the beach and let in winds and sounds of crashing waves at night, the delicious breakfast and fresh juices and the extremely friendly staff all made this a great vacation! We got a special treatment at the spa one day and I was so relaxed I fell asleep. The owner even checked in on us to ensure that everything was correct. When we had to get a taxi early in the morning to fly out the staff was there to assist with bright smiles. We will definitely come back again and again.

We loved every aspect of our stay there; it was beautiful, intimate, romantic and relaxed. The spa services were an added pleasure. We will be regulars.

I've been to Jake's before, lazily walked the beaches, soaked-up the Jamaican vibe we all dream about. So that''s all still there. And I've been around the island, and sensed the beautiful soul of the Jamaican people. But nowhere, is it more apparent then within the smiles and connections felt from the sweet staff of Jakes. They are worth the trip down. This ia a family-owned spot, and it seems that everyone there, is an extended part of the family. When you're at Jales, you become part of it all.

Combine this with the food, which is without question, as good as any found on the island, and the absolute cooolest accomodations in the carribean, and you soon recognize, there is no place quite like Jake's on earth.

The Henzell's have a long history on the island and nowhere is there love more felt than here. Love expressed in a constant upgrading of rooms, grounds and facilities. What was once a boehmian resort of exotic style, has now evolved into the same cool vibe, but SURPRISED me with new touches everywhere. All things, be-it new room fridges, funky new doo-dads, fans, air-con, soaps, new floors, fresh paint, a new spa and yoga room with cool breezes and a commanding beach view all combine to relax the soul. AHHHHHH!

If you come down to the south coast, and you miss Jake's, you miss the deep sweetness of Jamaica.

Still funky, still bohemian, but more than evere, presented with pure style and smiling-grace.

Sure beats the all-inclusive resorts if you are a down-to-earth nature lover. Accommodations are simple, clean and pretty. Great spot for mellow children to enjoy bathing in the ocean or playing by the pool. The restaurant is good, with fresh, healthy options like curried shrimp and arugula salad, as well as Jamaican standards like ackee and salt fish. Pizza next door isn't bad either and if Jakes is full they can recommend another spot right next door, which is also nice (but still stop by Jakes for a meal or a drink at the bar because the ambiance is unbeatable, especially on a breezy evening). And do make an appointment with their massage therapist--relax in the little hut right at the ocean waves and enjoy a real massage from this experienced practitioner (forgetting his name already!) If you want a real treat, come for the annual poetry festival and be blown away by some of Jamaica's countless gifted artists.
