We spent a week at Calibishie Lodges in Feb 2008 and we are now wishing that we had spent two weeks there rather than one week in Martinique and one week in Dominica.
I can't imagine that there is a better place to stay in Dominica. Beau Rive may have the #1 Tripadvisor rating, but if you are looking for a place with a swimable beach within walking distance, you can't beat Calibishie Lodges. And within a 15 minute drive from Calibishie is the most beautiful black sand beach that we have ever seen. We spent an hour there and never saw another human. If you don't care for the ocean, Calibishie Lodges has a nice swimming pool situated in a lovely garden and conveniently located near the restaurant and bar. You must try Chris' Pirate's Punch!
Calibishie Lodges is comfortable and friendly, the open-air restaurant is excellent, the staff is wonderful. You will never leave the restaurant hungry. You could spend your entire stay in Dominica without leaving the grounds of the Lodges. But don't! There is so much to see and experience. Chris and Linda know practically everything about Dominica and, if there is something they don't know, they know somebody that knows. They will arrange trips, tours, car rentals, taxis and anything else you might imagine. Should you decide to do some exploring that requires a guide, ask for David. He probably knows the names of every tree, flower, and animal in Dominica.
If you're looking for a high end vacation spot that shelters you from the local "riff raff" don't come here. For that matter, don't come to Dominica. Find a Club Med somewhere. (There's not one on Dominica and hopefully there never will be.) One of the things we loved about Calibishie Lodges is that it provides easy access into the local culture and makes you feel like a part of what's going on. The people of the village were among the warmest, most welcoming we've met on our travels. (Don't be alarmed at the sight of a machete-wielding Rasta walking towards you on the street! The machete is the "Swiss army knife" of Dominica.) If you can't stand the thought of a lizard on your window or a bat flying around in the evening hours, stay away. That said, the staff go out of their way to provide the little comforts that make all the difference in a hotel stay.
A previous review mentioned that their lodge was hot. Our upper lodge (#4) was never unbearably hot. Keep the windows open to let the cool Caribbean breeze in and you'll never be too warm. We never missed having AC.
As far as the hand-held shower nozzle mentioned by another reviewer, this is standard European plumbing. There's a holder above the faucet that holds the nozzle, if you want a "normal" shower (familiar to anyone with a Waterpik Shower Massage.)
Compared to our beachfront bungalow at Diamant les Bains in Martinique, Calibishie Lodges offered a much larger and nicer living space for $40 per day less.
