“What a great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2008

What a difference new owners make!!

The place is clean and welcoming, the staff and owners so friendly and helpful. We found there was always a smiling face and a yes to everything we wanted.

The food is FANTASTIC. We will never stay anywhere else in the area.

We loved the golf course it was the most scenic we have ever seen!

The lake front had boats for guests to use and there is even a movie theatre.

Some improvements still being made, but it was amazing to us that we could find a place like this at such reasonable rates.

In the words of the Terminator, we'll be back!

My husband and I love to explore Ontario and we love staying at many different out-of-the-way locations in search of solitude and nature. That being said, we do have standards for our accomodations - this was WAY BELOW what we are used to in a standard "hotel" let alone a "resort".
We stayed at the Martinwood Resort on the Thanksgiving weekend in October.
First off, if you are not there to golf, don't expect any fringe benefits or customer service for that matter. The single staff person who greeted us seemed annoyed that we pulled her away from her phone conversation, we were offered no information with respect to the local area or its attractions and we were bluntly told that the dining room closed at 7pm.
The website describes the resort as being located on Benoir Lake - the lake is a good 10 minute hike through the woods, the "beach" is a 3X8 dirt patch cut out of a small embankment. We were not informed that all of their canoes / boats had been pulled out of the water for the season and placed in storage. So much for the lake.
The website also tries to sell the resort as close to Algonquin Park's south entrance - this is true, it is VERY close, however they neglected to tell us on check in that there was sanctioned hunting occurring for this section of the park - not a very Hiker Friendly season!
The entire place has not been upgraded since probably the 70s, the room we had was small, closet sized really. The TV only had 5 channels despite being "satellite TV" There were old stains on the carpet outside of our room....didn't want to know and the one thing that I cannot get out of my mind, the dead flies in the dark and dingy stairwell - they stayed there the entire weekend- so much for cleaning.
Cleaning...they were great the first day, the room was nice and tidy when we came back, however likely due to the Holiday, there was no cleaning done on Thanksgiving Day - in fact, we thought they closed shop for the day. There was only 1 visible staff person in the entire building and she shut the lights out when she left - there were no hallway lights on, the place was BLACKED OUT, and the alarm was set. We couldn't check out if we wanted to.
Despite how nice it looks on the website, be warned, all pictures were likely taken when everything was brand new, the pool has windows which allow everyone in the pub to see you and it looks pretty dirty as well.
To put it simply, if all you care about is golf and a roof over your head, have fun. If you are looking for adventure - look elsewhere. We will NEVER go back to this place.
