Decided to give this place another try after a disappointing visit last summer. Service is still slow, but main thing needing improvement is welcome and atmosphere, which are both totally lacking. No smiles or greeting or thanks on arriving or leaving from any staff. Main menu is short, but the specials board was not pointed out to us, so we missed those options - surely a basic of service. The male bar staff (the owner?) was very bland and completely blank of expressions of welcome etc. No atmosphere in the place at all. The food was mostly very tasty, however no butter with dry bread with soup starter (again a basic) and garlic mushroom starter also served on thick slice of dry bread, which spoiled the tasty mushrooms and sauce rather. £12 for smallish fish and chips main course, which seems like overcharging to me. We won't bother again after this second poor quality visit. They still need to make many improvements!

Thank you for your feedback, I do regret that the service provided during your visit to the Marton Arms was unsatisfactory and that you found the staff unwelcoming. This is not the service that I would expect from any of my staff and have since spoke at length with them to ensure that all customers are given the same high level of service. As common practice the special board is highlighted when the bar person / waiter hands the menus over to our customers, in some cases our customers take the menu from the bar while the bar staff is serving and this perhaps happened on this occasion. With regard to your comment about the fish and chips, this is in fact one of our best sellers and in no shape or form would I have said the dish is small, as it is presented on a large oval plate, people usually comment on how big the portion is. I am sorry if you feel the dish was small and not value for money. We actually operate a value policy at the Marton Arms and I once again apologies if our waitress did not give you the benefit of this.

As a company wanting to provide our guests with real value for money we are constantly looking for ways and means in which we can achieve this. What’s more evaluating the ways and means in which we sometimes fails to do this is of paramount importance in order to move the business forward and we thank you for your comments.
