We have been going to the Marton Arms for over 25 years and have always found it a warm, welcoming pub with great choice of ales and good quality food. Sadly we have just visited and it was so bad we will not be returning. It was a Sunday afternoon and the pub was busy, but that isn't unusual. What was unusual was:-
- Children running around the bar area completely unfettered. We wondered where the parents where until it became clear that some of the children were with the staff. A family friendly pub is a good thing but this was more like a noisy, uncontrolled creche.
- Much reduced choice of ales. All the pumps are still there but very few are in use.
- Poor food. We only had sandwiches and chips. The bread was not the bloomer the menu promised. The prawn sandwich had lots of sauce and very few prawns on it. Those that there were had crunchy shell still on them, so poor care in the kitchen.
- Poor service. The bar staff were inexperienced and service was therefore very slow. During and after our meal no-one staff asked if everything was ok or if we wanted anything else.
There are so many other good pubs in the area that we will not be back to the Marton Arms, prefering to remember it when it was at its best.
