“Super castle and nearby walks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

Visited in previous summers. Great castle and loads of easy walks around Middleham. The area is just outside the Dales National Park but is beautiful with loads of great places to see.

“Home of Richard III”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Interesting castle, the boyhood home of Richard III. Probably the best time to visit is when English Heritage ar holding one of their events associated with its medieval history.

It's at the back of my garden and I love it!

“Castle of a King”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

This Engilsh Heritage property is steeped in history. A castle fit for a king. You can sense the history as you explore the ruins. Richard III and Anne Neville's home. The views from the tower are magnificent. North Yorkshire in her finery. Explore and you will find. Imagine life as it was in the castle as you walk round. The Castle tea rooms nearby are well worth a visit. However, like the castle there is no onsite toilet facilities. Don't let this put you off, these are a short distance. Recommended.

“Richard 111 - the story begins”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

This castle is great to begin the story of this king, so important in English history. He is more in our thoughts after his remains being found under a car park in Leicester. The castle is true to history, with no later additions or commercial enterprises. Middleham is a wonderful place to visit with pubs, cafes and shops, or a selection of B & Bs for longer visits to this great area.

“Meaning of Middleham”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

As adults, good memories from our childhood remain with us like a warm cloak. Middleham Castle, for the future Richard III, must have been one of those places. He spent his "growing years" there with boys under the tutelage of the Earl of Warwick, learning knightly behavior. This group of youngsters included the Earl's two daughters: Isabel and Anne. Richard's teen years were spent in battle loyally holding the vanguard for his older brother, Edward IV. After the Battle of Tewkesbury, Edward allowed Richard to marry Anne, who was likely his childhood sweetheart. They returned toether to Middleham keeping the peace in the north on behalf of the King. When you visit Middleham Castle it's not hard to imagine this group of young boys romping through the keep playing war games. Or riding over the downs on their sturdy ponies. Since the town now boasts more horses than residents and has become the home of numerous flat racing stables, the strings of horses & riders ambling through town on the way to/from their workouts adds atmosphere to this sleepy hamlet that was once the home of the Kingmaker and Richard III. The castle still has one of the only remaining horse-powered grist mills. Be sure to let your kids climb through the ruins and check out the remains of the privies!
