“Like stepping back in time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

Visited today with my 6 year old, we were with a school group. The castle is asthetically pleasing and a large proportion of it is opening for viewing. The surrounding views are amazing. We had a dedicated guide, master David, who I can not praise enough for his manner with the children. The guide was very informative and yet informal, the children were allowed to roam and explore and interact with the environment, and the outfits we were provided with really helped to set the scene.
I would definatly visit again, at £25 for a family ticket, I feel that price is reasonable, however I feel to make the most of your visit you should visit on one of the event weekends, which have additional activities.
NEGATIVES
not many really, £1.20 for a snickers bar in the coffee shop was a bit steep, maybe overpriced, so take your own food.
Would not advice families with toddlers, pushchairs and wheelchairs not suitable to this environment, due to cobbles and lots of steep narrow steps.
Castle gardenys were very basic and I did not see any outside picnic areas, which is a shame.
Overall I would recommend.

“Excellent experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

Bolton castle is incredible! you really feel like you have gone back in time and the views and surroundings are stunning.

you could spend at least a couple of hours roaming freely around the castle and grounds and ther are lots of interesting facts and historical information posted around the castle and grounds. The gardens are beautiful.

Very child friendly and lots to learn from a visit to the castle. Definitly worth a visit

“If you like castles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

Gave an insight to what life was like hundred of years ago with replicas in most rooms..not just a ruin. Complete with birds of prey, wild hogs with their babies and gardens with a Maze...thought it a bit expensive at first but once in decided it was worth every penny. I think most children would enjoy this attraction there were little games set out for them but not sure if this was because of the Easter holidays. One thing to be aware of there are lots of steps, there was a lot of walking involved.

“Intelligent use of Castle Grounds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

We had an excellent day at this Castle. The surroundings were beautiful. There were bird displays, archery for the kids and wild boar to see. There was also an egg hunt and craft areas for children. In addition the staff were friendly and helpful and made the effort to cook a gluten free omelette for my partner. Well worth the visit.
One thing I would add is that you pay for parking and get the money back, so as entry is £7.50 per adult you may as well pay for full parking. If you do not have the change it is possible to give your number plate to the staff.
Obviously this is a castle and that means many steps etc so be prepared to carry younger children.
