Called here ,before heading home after having a spa day at The Feversham Arms . The Black Swan is one of my favourite places ... Beautiful surroundings , great service, lovely fruit scones & pot of tea.

“The Black Swan, or the Star Inn?...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2014

The Black Swan, was extremely inviting. The bar is modern and we were made to feel welcome by the barman who was very knowledgeable about the cask ales he was serving.
The olives and nibbles presented to us with our drinks were a great start. Our order was taken in the bar and my allergy to mustard was noted.
A few minutes later, our jackets were taken and we were seated at a beautifully laid table with immaculate linen and it was a luxury to have my napkin placed on my lap by our waiter.
We were then served with a superb 'amuse bouche' of iced cucumber.
Unfortunately, after that, things went slightly awry and our order was forgotten.
As Russell Norman recently said 'You can rescue a bad food experience with great service, but no amount of good food is going to rescue a bad service experience'....
It was not bad food by any means, but the small mistakes that were made in the service were made up for by the superb service afterwards.
When the food arrived, we all enjoyed it, but particularly the cheeseboard, which was expertly explained to us and was followed by some wonderful coffee and chocolates.
The cost for 4 of us with 3 bottles of wine, 2 pints of beer, and coffee was £200.
Overall, it was a memorable experience in a very smart environment and we left feeling happy and satisfied.
Next stop: The Star Inn. Let's see how they compare.....

“Disappointing experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

We went because we had heard good things about the restaurant. We stayed overnight so we weren't rushed.

Nice room, bed etc. Dinner was very disappointing. I chose soup, although it had a fancy name, and braised beef. Both dishes were poor. The soup had no particulat taste- I would have been hard put to tell you what was in it if I hadn't seen the menu. The beef was slow braised but tasted of nothing much. A shame.

The whole place is a little pretentious. Leaves the wallet empty, the stomach unfilled and wishing we had eaten eleswhere.

“Sunday lunch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

Recently had Sunday lunch at the Black Swan. Both diners went for the beef as it was on the menu as rib of beef. When it arrived it was obviously not rib and was rather tough. Other than this the meal was pleasant and staff friendly.

“Welcoming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

A very quaint little tea room. No trip to Helmsley is complete without a trip to the Black Swan for tea and cake. There was a lovely fire to keep out the chill. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The afternoon tea is definitely worth recommending.
