“Welcoming B&B with exceptional breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

We were cycle touring with friends and Lizzie made us very welcome. We were able to leave our bikes under cover in a secure place. Our room opened on to a court yard area at the rear of the property. The room was well equipped to a high standard and the bed was very comfortable with high quality linen. Only gripes might be lack of wifi signal and slightly thinner walls than one might have expected at the price. The bathroom was to a good standard with plenty of space. The breakfast was superb, very well cooked with high quality ingredients locally sourced. Only reason for 4 rather than 5 starts is that it still seemed a little expensive in comparison to other good quality places we have stayed.

Dear Andy

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor.

I am sorry that the wifi signal wasn't up to scratch when you stayed. It can be a bit patchy but generally works very well. We do have guests who from time to time replace lower case letters for capitals and vise versa. You did mention that you hadn't been able to access the wifi very well as you departed so I hope it wasn't a case of the above.

Not quite sure what I can do about the walls or the location - we are only a 2/3 minute walk from the Market Place and you would have had to cycle past No54 on your route out of Helmsley.

I am delighted you enjoyed your breakfast - I try to offer as much local and seasonal produce as I can as well as quality butchery and dairy products. Good taste, gate to plate miles kept as low as possible and enough breakfast to fuel the hungriest of visitors.

Lizzie

Thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay as we pottered round the moors. Spotlessly clean, comfortable rooms, lots of little extras - including a slice of homemade lemon drizzle cake on arrival! An easy stroll down to The Feathers for some decent pub food and a couple of beers, and a cracking full English breakfast next day at No. 54, mean you go away replete! Ideal.

My boyfriend and I visited Helmsley for a wedding and booked in at No. 54 for 2 nights.

Often when staying at a b&b, you feel like a guest in a strangers home and conscious of noise etc, especially as the bedrooms are within the main residence.

We loved 54 as the bedrooms are away from the main house, in a courtyard, and feel like self contained mini-apartments.

The little touches, such as fresh flowers, extensive tea/coffee tray, sitting room area, set this b&b apart.

The breakfast on both days, was fantastic! The owners both lovely and friendly.

We will definitely come again.

First of all, don’t be put off by the facade; whilst the premises front the main road (‘Bondgate’), the three bedrooms are away round the back, all on ground level, and stand around a patio/courtyard, which can be a right suntrap at times.

Each room is accessed via French Doors, which open onto the ‘patio’.

Similarly, whilst there may not be a private car park, once the town goes quiet (about tea-time) free roadside parking is easy; and because the premises are less than five minute’s walk from the town centre, you can leave your car there for the duration.

All areas of the B & B are spotless; the facilities in the room are very adequate indeed, and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Breakfast is largely furnished by locally sourced products, and the choice is varied.

Lizzie and her helpers are very accommodating and willing; we certainly enjoyed our two days there!

I had heard some very good reports about no 54 and was doing business in the area so decided to give it a try. Well I certainly was not dissapointed - and what a host Lizzie is. A lovely welcome and the fact the rooms are out the back makes it very peaceful, yet at the same a stones throw from the centre of Helmsley.

In terms of a B and B I dont think you will get much better. It is now the only place I stay if Im in the area.

Room Tip: Book early as the rooms are often full

Wonderful host, well appointed rooms, nice little touches and delicious breakfast. Only gripe was twin beds pushed together as a double - a personal annoyance. Overall a really nice B&B and indeed recommended, but in my humble opinion, overpriced.

Dear Tom

Thank you for your comments about your stay at No54. The 'twin' beds are actually a system called zip and link which is commonly used in hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses all over the world - sometimes you can notice other times not. I shall search for a thicker 'topper' so that any feeling of twin beds pushed together is avoided. This hasn't been drawn to our attention before.

Sorry that you feel we were over priced. I do say at the time of booking that although we offer a one night weekend stay the cost is slightly more than a 2 night stay during a weekend. Many establishments - hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses in this area and indeed others wont offer a 1 night stay but a 2 night only - not always what guests want. The establishments that do offer a 1 night weekend stay in Helmsley tend to offer this at a supplement or last minute availability only.

Many thanks for your review
Lizzie

Spent the weekend in Helmsley for our wedding anniversary and a pre Xmas family get together. Recommended 54 by a relative and couldn't have been more pleased. Welcome, and hospitality of a standard rarely seen in this country. Lizzie could not have done more for us to make our stay memorable. Needed a long walk around Duncomb Park to walk off one of the best Sunday breakfasts I have had in a long time. Will definitely return as it is an excellent base in lovely Helmsley to discover North Yorkshire from.
