“Lovely choice for a meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

We ate here on a monday evening and the pub served good value, delicious food very quickly. Good selection of booze and very comfortable surroundings. Top marks!
(We had the scampi-outstanding chips- and the cajun chicken burger-proper chicken breast)

Lovely pub in a great village off the North Yorkshie dales, we stayed one night, a Friday, we didn't realise the pub would be open and packed with loud music till gone 1am! You can hear the music perfectly clearly and even feel the bass...!
Breakfast was fine, nice staff too, not much they can do about the music but probably a warning about it mighht be a good idea, very nice room, king size bed and a slightly tired but fine bathroom, with shower.

Room Tip: If you want to be in the pub till 1am then it's fine, if you want an early night go elsewhere

Called in on the way back from the Lakes looking for a light lunch, The Royal Oak has a good menu, looks a nice country pub and provides ok food, unfortunately the staff seem unable to take a simple order correctly which ultimately ended up with us being charged too much, plus I firmly believe none of the staff have ever heard the phrase 'service with a smile'.

Our first visit to The Royal Oak and most certainly our last.

Stayed for one night whilst touring the area and generally liked the place and had a good stay in the beautiful Helmsley. Bar maid was young and inexperienced and dull and what with the yawning and general apathy they must be struggling for good staff in the area or pay peanuts. Beer on offer at £2 a pint. We were going to eat there but opted for the Feathers across the square and that was good, nice atmosphere and efficient staff. The room was pleasant with comfy King size and a single bed and traditional furniture, overlooking the square. Bathroom was ok with just a shower(electric) and a Saniflow but no towel rail or ring for hanging wet towels! Breakfast was good and served in the restaurant by a nice friendly waitress, Polish I think...
Car parking outside but council limited times(bad for tourism I feel) or you can park on the road at the back for free. Market on a Friday.
To sum up a fairly basic place but clean and good value bed and breakfast.I visited this pub ten years ago and it has slipped. Need to smarten up on the bar and food front for the "Warm Yorkshire welcome" A bit more effort and the place could be a great hostelry.

Room Tip: Enquire by phone.

We arrived at Helmsley and, not knowing the area, chose this pub for lunch thinking we couldn't go wrong as everything around the square looked so nice. Big mistake! This is obviously the poor cousin in a foodie paradise. The service was rude and surly. The food was slow to arrive and when it did, it was average and tasted like it had all come out of packets; nothing appeared to be home-made.
The worst experience however was in the toilets. There was a large shelf sticking out of a wall near the mirror and I backed into it; I still have a large bruise around my kidney to prove it. The shelf served no purpose whatsoever and should be taken down. This had clearly happened before as we found out when my husband reported it to the barman, who couldn't have cared less.

This pub was suggested by my girlfriend, and as a glorious hot Saturday afternoon (4.30pm) we went in looking for a nice cold pint & something nice to eat.
I duly asked a lady working behind the bar whether they are serving food before asking for a for few drinks, (she turned out to be the landlords mother), she said something about 5pm being the cut off time for food and presented us with menu's. after a short while we try to order only to be told by a surly landlord that food wasn't available until 5.30, even though his menu's stated food was available from 12pm on a Saturday, I told him that the lady behind the bar said 5pm, but he retorted with a smug look that I had miss-heard his mother. I informed him I wasn't very pleased after extorting £6.60 for drinks that were only ordered under the impression that we could order food shortly.
He started getting on his high horse about he was correct and his mother hadn't said 5pm, after informing him his menu's didn't state the start and end times for food, he replied he didn't have to as it was his pub, then promptly told us to leave.
He is the rudest landlord I have ever met throughout the world, and certainly not one Marston's Brewery should be letting loose on the general public! They should send this guy to customer service skills training. (He boasted he had been in the business 6yrs, whoopee, in other words 5 minutes) he needs to go back to what he was doing before and stop playing shop and take note of other peoples reviews on here.

Room Tip: Avoid and check other review for this rude place.

Had high expectations of this lovely looking country pub/restaurant, but was sadly let down.
We had booked ahead and arrived shortly before 6pm, we said we had a booking but the staff member who checked could not seem to find us, eventually saying, "do you want to sit over there" So we duly took our seats at a table which was only set out for one, and waited for our order to be taken, but it never was and we had to go back to the bar to order. Thinking it would have been nice if they had explained this was how things worked, but we actually then saw someone taking an order from a table, so that wasn't a good start, having sat for 30mins.
When the meal did arrive it was almost thrown at us, the staff seeming to be in a constant panic. Food was very average, the meat of out sunday lunch being very fatty.
All in all very poor, won't be going back in a hurry
