“'Very Good' sums this place up perfectly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

Enjoyed an evening meal here whilst visiting Helmsley based on previous trip advisor reviews.
We thought the interior was comfortable and welcoming and found the staff to be very friendly (special mention goes to a nice young lad called Daniel who served us at our table). The olives and nuts on arrival were a nice touch and the freshly baked warm bread buns were to die for.
The menu was good and I was particularly impressed that they offered a completely separate menu for vegetarians as opposed to one choice tagged on the end as is so common in many 'high end' restaurants we have dined in. The chef should also be commended for his or her creative dishes and adventurous use of ingredients. The bottle of pinot grigio we shared was excellent.
The food itself was very good, but not excellent. As a vegetarian i chose a lovely blue cheese mousse starter then a gnocchi main course...small portions but nicely presented and well balanced flavours. my partner had scallops to start which he said were good then pork belly with lobster for his main dish which was just so so. The desserts were poor and, to be honest, we wished we hadn't bothered.
To summarise, It wasn't that there was anything wrong with the meal, its just that we have had a lot better for a lot less money (our total bill was £130 excluding a tip). In my opinion this restaurant is a little pretentious and thinks its a lot better than it actually is. Having said that, if i lived locally and I was looking for somewhere to go for a special meal, i might be tempted to give it another go.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012 via mobile

Just stayed for one night, wish it had been a week! We were greeted with the news that they had given us an upgrade which was a great start. So stayed in a really nice suite. Really friendly staff. Had the taster menu in restaurant. Excellent. Would definitely return.

“Food excellent, service awful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012 via mobile

The hotel looks lovely and the bar staff were great company; an asset to the hotel.

We went through to the restaurant for their tasting menu which was really nice, and although we didn't have the cheese- as other reviewers have said - the cheese board is amazing.

What let down the whole evening was the guy who appeared to be in charge of our part of the restaurant.

Andy had the matching wines with the tasting menu. The first one came after the starter was finished, the second glass came when he'd nearly finished that course - so I told him thinking that may make him pay a bit more attention. Wrong. He just let's the whole restaurant down. He's probably the reason it hasn't got a Michelin star. I have to point out that this guy isn't the French manager; I think he was his side-kick.

“Wonderful afternoon tea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012 via mobile

Serves the best afternoon tea we have had for a long time in lovely surroundings. Can also break the tea down into sandwiches and scones for the smaller appetite - highly recommended.

“Michelin inspector - where are you?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

It seems unfair to talk just about the restaurant when the rooms and spa facilities are so good, but the food here is just so good that it can only be a matter of time before a Michelin star is awarded.
The combination of tastes and flavours was quite frankly delicious and having eaten both the tasting and a la carte menus over two days, I can thoroughly recommend a visit and a stay if you are travelling from a distance. For cheese lovers, there is a trolley with a choice of 17 varieties, just too good to miss.
The service was attentive and the friendliness of the staff, warm.
Do go if you get the chance, certainly if we lived nearer I'm sure we would.
