Enjoyed an evening meal here whilst visiting Helmsley based on previous trip advisor reviews.
We thought the interior was comfortable and welcoming and found the staff to be very friendly (special mention goes to a nice young lad called Daniel who served us at our table). The olives and nuts on arrival were a nice touch and the freshly baked warm bread buns were to die for.
The menu was good and I was particularly impressed that they offered a completely separate menu for vegetarians as opposed to one choice tagged on the end as is so common in many 'high end' restaurants we have dined in. The chef should also be commended for his or her creative dishes and adventurous use of ingredients. The bottle of pinot grigio we shared was excellent.
The food itself was very good, but not excellent. As a vegetarian i chose a lovely blue cheese mousse starter then a gnocchi main course...small portions but nicely presented and well balanced flavours. my partner had scallops to start which he said were good then pork belly with lobster for his main dish which was just so so. The desserts were poor and, to be honest, we wished we hadn't bothered.
To summarise, It wasn't that there was anything wrong with the meal, its just that we have had a lot better for a lot less money (our total bill was £130 excluding a tip). In my opinion this restaurant is a little pretentious and thinks its a lot better than it actually is. Having said that, if i lived locally and I was looking for somewhere to go for a special meal, i might be tempted to give it another go.
