“Want some peace and quiet.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

Set in the village of Carperby in the beautifull Yorkshire Dales is the Wheatsheaf Hotel , what a great place for a quiet break . We were met by Claire one of the owners daughters who really could not have been more friendley and helpfull making our stay one to be repeated soon. Our room was large comfortable and warm and lacked nothing, food plentifull with a wide choice the breakfasts very good. Fine Theakston ales in the bar put the icing on the cake . The hotel was the venue for James Herriots honeymoon a wise choice for them. Claires sister who co-runs the hotel is also the chief and does a great job.At the rear is a large carpark plenty of space, across the road is a well signposted path through the fields to the beautifull Aysgarth Falls well worth a visit. Also a must is a short drive to Hawes and its world famous Wensleydale cheese factory.Must not finish the review without mentioning Ladyboy the large black pub cat whose also very friendly.Don,t expect 5star but you will get a 5star welcome and srevice with a smile.

Room Tip: We had room 10 which was more than adequate for our needs whilst very quiet.

We very much enjoyed a six night stay at the Wheatsheaf, Our room was a good size, bed very comfortable and efficient power shower; all important especially on a longer stay. The bar and lounge were very homely and the staff warm and friendly. We enjoyed the two real ales available and excellent home-cooked food - the menu was extensive and reasonably priced. Located in a beautiful countryside our stay at the Wheatsheaf was so good we have booked another six night stay in August!

Room Tip: Room 5 is spacious with dual aspect windows.

Four of us booked into two rooms at this lovely little inn. My wife and I had previously stayed here in November 2010. We liked the place then so we thought we would stay again as we were coming to Yorkshire for a 3 day break. We had rooms 4 & 5 in the Apedale part of the Inn. The rooms were certainly large enough for our 3 night stay and had very comfortable beds and also good power shower. We ate in the bar every night and found the food menu to be varied. Breakfast was good with ample choice of cereal, yoghurt and fresh fruit and of course a full English. The staff were all friendly and attentive. Only one query was raised by us & this was very quickly sorted by Claire (manager). If we come back to this part of the country again, we will definitely be booking in to The Wheatsheaf. Thanks once again to Claire and her staff.

This was our first experience of staying in a pub but we will certainly do it again ! The Wheatsheaf is a welcoming place with very friendly and attentive staff. The room was a decent size, clean and a good power shower. Excellent home cooked English breakfast, evening food offered a superb choice, well presented, delicious, hot and was good value for money, as was the real local ale ! The atmosphere was casual and relaxing and perfect for a short break - we really enjoyed the place. Situated in Carperby, a very old quaint village, it presented the perfect place for a tranquil retreat. Location is good as almost in the centre of the Dales so easy access to many surrounding villages - Richmond, Leyburn, Aysgarth Falls on the doorstep, and also The Wensleydale Cheese Co in Hawes is well worth a visit. An excellent Bank Holiday weekend and not overcrowded - I would definately recommend The Wheatsheaf and its location.

We stopped 2 nights here over the Bank Holiday weekend. Cant recommend this place enough. The staff are fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them. The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced! Their homemade steak and bacon pie was amazing!!!
Would defiantly stay here again!!

Stopped at The Wheatsheaf overnight early May and it was suited to our purpose. It is in quite a remote area if the weather is not good but I'm sure when the Sun is shining it would seem a lot better. The pub/b and b has a small lounge area for residents and a bar area for taking meals and having drinks although it has very limited space. Breakfasts were taken in another room opposite the residents lounge and were adequate although far from anything special. The Twin Room we occupied had no shower but a bath and this was explained on booking. The room was on the small side with a flat screen t.v. but was a little dated probably because of the age of the property but it sufficed for one night. We did not dine here so cannot comment on the quality of the food but on receiving my bill I found that meals had been added but this was quickly resolved so no harm done. Overall the staff were good but the star was the Big Black Cat whom we thought was fantastic. This price I paid was £76 which I thought was a little at the top end considering the establishment overall.

Me my wife and 19 month old only stayed 1 night in May 2013 but found it a lovely place. The room we had was a decent size accommodating all of us comfortably. It was clean and in good condition. The service from all staff was great. checkin, evening meal, breakfast and check out. They could not have been more helpful. The evening meal was lovely and alot more gourmet style than you might expect from a country Inn. Breakfast was nice though some may say it was limited if you are used to larger establishments providing everything but the kitchen sink. but for us it was perfect. All in all we loved it and would reccommend it and stay again.
