“The so-called boutique hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2008

This hotel is not worth $200 a night. It’s not a luxury boutique hotel as it claims. The furniture in the rooms is old and dusty, the bed is very uncomfortable, the food is mediocre, and the hotel locates just next to a big construction zone and smelly horse barns.

In addition here’s what happened when we stayed there for two nights:

Our room was not clean. After I told two different staff members, they removed the dirty Kleenexes and a dirty sheet right next to our bed. The carpet in the room did not look like it was recently vacuumed. When I attempted to open the window a cloud of dust came from the drapes. The screen of the window was broken (that means lot of flies in the room) and there was a spider web on the screen. Later that evening we killed a big cockroach. I realized that the threshold of the main door (room doors open to the yard and the threshold was just a piece of sponge) was thorn so I put a towel to prevent other insects to enter. When we went upstairs to sleep, I saw another spider web on the baseboard with a spider on it. Is it possible to vacuum/clean the floor and miss a spider web on the baseboard? Then I saw bloodstains on my duvet! I went to the manager and complained. He was nice. He apologized and insisted that they clean the room one more time. But it was midnight. I asked them to give me a clean duvet and to clean the room the next day. The next day no body offered a housekeeping service. I was expecting at least the owner to apologize but she even did not attempt to say hello to us.

The Princess islands are very romantic but rough. Unfortunately there are not any nice hotels there. Aya Nikola hotel conforms the rough style of the island despite its $200 rate.

The pension is very nicely located in the middle of the island by the sea. All rooms are facing the seaside and are almost artistically designed with a different colour each. We could choose which atmosphere we liked best.
There is a small living area and the canopy beds are situated above the Hamam-style bathrooms. Once you step out the door, you find yourself on the seaside terrace. You can also have your breakfast on another terrace, and the breakfast was the best I had during my stay in Turkey. The staff is very friendly and added to the enjoyable surrounding. From the village, you walk 25 mins or take a horse carriage for about 10 Euros. There is some construction work going on nearby at the moment, however this did not disturb us in any way.

A stay at Aya Nikola Butik Pansiyon is definitely a special experience and very recommendable.

I've lived in istanbul for the past 7 years. I fell in love with the "islands' from the first time I visited. As a traditional summer getaway for Istanbul residents, each of the islands has a unique feel and character. None of the island allow cars -- so transport is limited to horse drawn carriages and bicycles (easily rented) and walking. The islands' centers are filled with ice cream stands, fish restaurants and snack places. All the islands have public beaches -- again packed on weekends. Buyukada, which means the "big island" is the most sophisticated and equipped for tourism. It is packed on weekends with Turkish day-trippers during the summer. Its flower lined streets, beautiful old turkish houses toured by carriage take you back to another time. While most tourists choose to day trip to the islands if they make it there at all. If you are trying to escape the mass package tourism of Mediterranean and Aegean coastal resorts -- a few days on the island are an interesting and different option. There are a few sites to visit -- particularly on Buyukada. There is a working Greek Monastery -- Aya Iyorgi, a stunning old orphanage, a handful of Greek churches and a synagogue. In general, however, Buyukada is about slowing down, taking long walks, drinking in the atmosphere of a time gone by. As a runner and cyclist, I run everyday and cycle around the island. Children are free to roam -- they pack the center of town every night. This is a place that has not lost its innocence.

These days there are some lovely small hotel options. One very notable addition is Aya Nikola on the Maden side of the island. a mother daughter team from the city have opened what has to be one of the most romantic spots in istanbul. At the end of the residential neighborhood where the forests on the island begin. Aysen Hanim and her daughter have created a handful of incredibly charming sea-side rooms. All are decorated with antiques and traditional Turkish fabrics. All have old wooden doors, marble fragments, pottery etc. They have built a small beach area for swimming and sunning. The place started out as a cafe. The food is basic, fresh and well prepared. This is a place for an escape, for a romantic weekend, to recharge in a lovely place with a lovely hostess. Lets put it this way -- even though I have own house on the island now -- i was tempted to check in for a few days to get some reading and writing done in peace and quiet.

If you come to Istanbul -- come to the islands.
