This is a small hotel with a downstairs restaurant and big terrace for lunch and dinner for guests and passing people. The rooms on the second floor have of course a better view. Rooms are very small, the small balcony is enough for two people. The view is stunning, sea, beach scene, boulevard and on both sides a hill. So there is lots to see. The stretch in front of this hotel is car free. A bit further away cars are allowed.
I had lunch here once, the food is ok. The house wine was good and very reasonable priced. It was nice to relaxe a few hours sitting and sipping only a few meters away from my room after a long trip.
Later I discovered casamar, only 100 stair steps away. It is said that they have a michelin star. They offer a set lunch with tree choices of entree, mains and desert for around 25 euro. Their housewine (bottle) was around 14 euro. Very reasonable. The food, the presentation, the timing and the servicing waiters were all spot on. I loved it and did eat there 2 x.Food is served outside on the terrace with views of llafranch and the bay.
Hotal llagosta is a good choice for people with a small budget and who want to have direct beach access en views. One has to pay more for seaviews, but is worth it.
The downside is that some rooms have no toilet and shower. Guests will use these facilities until very late like 23.30 hrs. This being an old hotel with bad accoustics, one will hear every door closing, every key being turned and every word said in the corridors. The restaurant also causes noise, and at times people will be sitting outside on benches and talking right into the night. It makes sleeping before midnight difficult. As the season gets hotter, the people will tend to stay up even later.
In the morning already quit early a machine starts cleaning the beach. This can prevent guests from sleeping a bit longer. So I had short nights.
The crew working here is not very talkative, althoug I speak some spanish. But do we really expect to be on friendly terms with all the tourists who spend a few days here, most of whom do not speak a single word of spanish. They do their job and work hard with long hours.
Llafranch village and the adjacent small villages are undisturbed by high rise buildings, it looks like nothing changed since the 60's. Very laid back. Many walking trails. It is easy to stay here without getting bored for 5 to 7 days. Must have own transport.
Visit aiguablava! This is a small beach wedged in between mountains, between begur and tamariu. Incredible views, a handfull of retro look restaurants, some beach chairs and again this feeling of the 60's.
The road along the coast to reach this small beach is beautiful but only suitable for small cars, certainly not for caravans and campers. On many places the road is slightly wider then a car.
Other beaches which I explored up to 5 km north of begur were less beautiful.
I would certainly return to this part of the costa brava, (with walking shoes) but would spend more and go to hotel hostalillo in tamariu. That hotel has a large terrace for their guests to relaxe and eat , with views overlooking the bay and directly on the beach, (steps), no traffic, no road. I would avoid high peak season as it will be too hot and busy to fully enjoy a comfortable stay in this beautiful part of spain.
The views from the lighthouse and the hotel at far sant sebastia are beautiful, but sometimes lighthouse and hotel can stay in misty clouds for many hours.
Top floor, beach side.
