“You Can Have Anything You Like Except What You Ordered!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

This was not our first trip to this hotel, our previous 2 visits have been lovely and reported upon on here. We travelled with Sovereign (brilliant yet again) and arrived at the hotel having booked a twin room with a sea view.

After our private transfer from the airport we checked in and were shown to our 'double room' which had a lovely view of a brick wall. We could have enjoyed a jacuzzi but only with the curtains closed because everyone round the pool would have had a view straight into the room! Needless to say we didn't even bother unpacking and returned straight to reception.

We were told that there were no other rooms available until Saturday (this being Thursday) and that we would have to make the most of it until then.

I phoned our Sovereign rep. and explained the situation to her and she immediately phoned the hotel. We were party to a conversation between her and a man on reception, we couldn't hear what she was saying but the man told her he had the perfect solution and would send us to the Gloria Palace Royal, a mile further out of Puerto Rico. At no time were we asked if this suited us.

Whilst the man was talking to our rep I shouted across to him that his 'solution' was not acceptable to us. We were staying b & b and like to walk into Puerto Rico to eat every night. Walking from the gloria Palace Royal into Puerto Rico was not an option for us and we were not prepared to pay for a taxi every night.

Eventually we were offered a different room with twin beds but no sea view. We went to look at it and it was quite small, no bath, just a shower which was filthy, and situated such that if you opened your curtains in the morning everyone in the hotel reception and surrounding area looked straight into the room. We guessed that this was probably a room used by staff or a broom closet but there being no alternative we were forced to accept it with a promise of a move to a better room on Saturday, we did insist that the shower was given a thorough clean before accepting the room. At no time did anyone from the hotel apologise to us for this situation. We were duly moved on Saturday to a room with twin beds and a lovely sea view.

Our Sovereign rep. came to the hotel on the Sunday, by mutaul arrangement, and took our complaint. We have been promised a refund for the 2 nights we had to spend in the broom closet. I understand that this money will be recovered from the hotel by Sovereign. The rep. asked if there was anything the hotel could do by way of apology and we suggested something to her which she thought would be appropriate, but at no time were we offered anything by the hotel.

We shall not be returning here.

Oh my god what a fantastic hotel. But if you like to stay out late dont go to this hotel. They shut the bottom gate at 11.30. So you have to walk all the way round to the main door , wich is fine if you are a goat. The hill into the hotel is like the Iger. Staff seem unconcerned.

After hearing so many good reviews we were really looking forward to our 7 night break - how disappointed were we!! Check in efficient enjoyed a welcome drink, €10 deposit for each beach towel, €5 deposit for safe with €2.60 daily charge, 60 cent charge to change bath towels!!! Would have expected this included from a highly rated 4* hotel.

We stayed in block 3 with stunning sea views room clean, spacious and comfortable.

Food dreadful, all served buffet style plenty of choice however maybe they should concentrate on quality and not quantity, food luke warm, everything looked as though it had been sitting for days with thick skin, we were all inclusive but ate out 5 nights out if 7.

Snack bar food ok - however two separate menu one if which was excluded from all inclusive!!

Bar service very slow, two of the bars within hotel were excluded from all inclusive?!! All inclusive drinks stopped at 2330hrs, and at one if the pool side bars it stopped at 1900hrs for all inclusive use.

Entertainment awful.

Felt hotel lacked atmosphere some staff grumpy and unapproachable however others lovely.

After having stayed in various 4 & 5* hotels this hotel just doesn't live up to their rating, will never return.

Puerto Rico very run down - Amadores beach lovely with lovely restaurants.

I am writing this review on our last day at the Gloria, from our balcony watching the world go by. I agree with all the other reviews lovely hotel and great location. We were a couple and went half board. Our room was block 4, our room was huge and the view amazing out to sea. I think all the rooms are all similar size, furnishings and facilities. The breakfast selection was great, plenty fruit, breads, cold meats/cheese and bacon, eggs, sausages and pancakes. As we were on half board we always ventured out during the day for lunch. Evening was a buffet started off great but agree with other guests that seemed deteriorate through the week. It was ok but not what we were looking for we hoped for little more variety. Next time we would only stay breakfast. Hotel facilities were ok from spa, two pools, plenty of areas to sunbath and bar areas for drinks and snacks. Puerto Rico was our favourite area plenty of things to do for young and old. Different type of bars and shops to venture around. Approx 15mins from the hotel turning left from the glass lift. The first bar was the Hawaiian Bar great cocktails and great Elvis. We shopped in the local SPAR for provisions and plenty selection for wines and beers. We took great advantage of the small fridge.

Remember to leave the one spare in the room for the electrics / fridge otherwise goes off during the day. If you want to sun bath from your balcony take the relaxing arm chairs out!! If you are English great tea and coffee facilities, Gloria are happy for you to take restocking from the breakfast. We did find the drinks in the hotel little expensive, we usually stocked from our room!!! Taxi are cheap, if you found you didn't want to walk back on an evening. We found a typical Irish bar in Puerto Rico (second harbour) from walk from the hotel. This is where you catch the boat to Morgan Blue Bird Lineas 10€ return. You walk round approx. 5mins past the sPAR and the beach small pier area. The Red Rose bar or Murphy's Bar are owned by the small Irish family for the past 15 years. Food you is great, we are off their for Sunday Lunch 7.95€. Murphy's you can relaxing watching football or outside where the Red Rose is. Also if your need English provisions they have small shop. If you want more night life head towards the Commercial Shopping area past SPAR on your left keep walking approx 10mins, where you start mini golf, angry birds play area for the kids, community small park, and then the main shopping area for food, bars and shopping. Plenty of food shops I.e SPAR... Banks, ATMs. and not forgetting McDonalds!!!! Overall great holiday :):)

Room Tip: We did email in advance, block 3 and 4 are not over looking the pool area. All blocks have sea views...

As the title says, this is a beautiful hotel in a really stunning location. It is only a few minutes walk to Puerto Rico with a sea front path the whole way and about a ten minute walk to Amadores beach in the opposite direction.
The hotel itself is amazing, great food, friendly and welcoming staff, clean and spacious rooms, and entertainment for all ages young and old.
We will definitely be returning to this hotel and would highly recommend it.

Stayed in this hotel early November and was disappointed at the rules regarding all inclusive. The poolside bar which had lovely seating area and spectacular views was after 7pm excluded from the all inclusive status. If you wanted to get away from the numerous noisy kids and the pethetic excuse for entertainment you had to either walk round to the overcrowded entertainment bar leaving your partner sitting themself and wait ages to be served or pay the ridiculous charge of 9 euros for a vodka and coke.
