Spent 2 weeks at the start of June 2013 at the Riu Vistamar and we had a great holiday in the quiet resort of Amadores.
Upon arrival we were given a warm welcome after a short wait at check in and given a room on one of the higher floors, the 4th floor, which we had requested after booking our holiday which was lovely. All rooms have a sea view which are stunning with ours facing out to the sea with the cliff face which takes you to Puerto Rico on our left.
I agree with other reviewers that the rooms could benefit from a bit of updating however this was no issue at all as it had everything we needed and it was kept incredibly clean by the maids every day.
There are 3 pools with our favourite being the free style infinity pool on the higher level which we found more relaxing than the other free style main pool where the water activities took place during the day. The water from the higher level pool drops down to the lower level pool to make a nice waterfall feature. The 3rd pool was a small circular infants pool.
As well as the pool areas there was also a solarium sunbathing area which we unfortunately did not try until the last couple of days as we would have spent more time there if we had tried it sooner. The views from all areas of the pools are incredible however from the solarium you can see the views to the left looking towards Puerto Rico, the sea straight ahead and over Amadores beach looking on to Tenerife to the right and this topped the lot for us!!
There is a snack bar next to one of the pools which served late breakfasts, general food such as burgers, hot dogs, pizza, salads and chips at lunch time and late afternoon cakes with tea or coffee. In the evening part of this area is used for the 3 themed dinner nights, the Asian, Barbecue or Andalusia. Unfortunately this is where the hotel lets itself down as for us as you have to book these nights in advance it really should be waiter service. The setting is lovely however like the main food hall it is also serve service and the food is of the same quality as the food in the main dining area.
The food in general was lovely with a varied choice for all. When checking in you are allocated a time slot for dinner as there is 2 sittings at 18.30 or 20.30 however I believe this could be altered to suit. The food was always fresh and constantly made to ensure no one was disappointed or kept waiting on a particular dish for too long.
One of the huge plus points for this hotel is the staff!! From the moment we arrived to the moment we were given a warm handshake and wished a safe journey home we could not help but be impressed. Always smiling and wishing you a nice day, nothing was a problem. The reception staff were warm and kind, the bar staff incredibly efficient, the maids worked constantly but with a smile on there faces and the dining staff again incredibly efficient.
Amadores itself is in a quieter location although only a few minutes taxi drive or 20 walk round a cliff face from Puerto Rico. The beach is lovely and if you want to eat out like we did on several occasions at night I would recommend the Amadores Beach Club. This place is very classy and the food is fantastic with a very relaxing chilled out area you can have a drink before or after your meal. The setting next to Amadores beach looking out to the sea is very romantic.
Overall we would definitely return to Amadores and to the Riu Vistamar. This hotel has a lot of positives and if several small alterations like the rooms being updated and an ala carte being introduced were to happen it could be arguably the best hotel in the Amadores/Puerto Rico area.
Ask for a room as high up as possible and preferable looking over Amadores beach!
