“Serious upgrade needed.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

Recently got back from a weeks stay here at the Puerto Azul in Puerto rico and I must say I was very disappointed with everything.
The hotel needs a serious makeover, I bet it was lovely back in the late 70s or early 80s but that decor and styling now just looks shabby and tired.
Pool area is very cramped and we were here in January, I wouldnt want to be here at the peak times, the adult only area was ok but the small jacuzzi pool soon got full.
Evening entertainment was poor to say the least maybe it is better at peak times but again there is very little room for a comfortable sit down.
FOOD OMG !!!!!! We have been all inclusive quite a few times and this has got to be the worst so far (but not the cheapest we have paid). Very repetitive luke warm at best mediocre food, spag bol every night, cold hard fries, had to go searching for cutlery and napkins every time you visit and have to drink out of throw away plastic cups. If you fancy a desert as you arrive get it then because when it was gone it wasnt replaced. Food not labelled very well, all in all very poor all round.
Cleaning around the hotel was very poor at least, on the Monday night we were on our way back to our room and there were 2 dirty plates on the wall of a room not far from ours and they were still there 2 days later. Room cleanliness was OK at best but it is difficult to notice any difference as these rooms are so scruffy and tired. The waitresses in the restaurant did try very hard and worked non stop but struggled to keep up, maybe more needed. The gents toilet behind reception had some serious drainage problems all week as the smell when you went in was stomach churning.
The help yourself beer and wine was very poor in quality and strength, we had very few spirits to drink as the queue at the bar was ridiculous, its all inclusive why were these not help yourself as in other all inclusive hotels we have stayed in?
Hot water in the room was very hit and miss either skin scalding hot and then in an instant freezing cold and a few times water nearly stopped for a few seconds as you were showering.
I have slated this hotel a bit but I paid £938.00 for 2 people at the start of January and expected more as in other hotels we have stayed in. If it was a couple of hundred pounds cheaper I would not be complaining.
Reception staff were ok but on our last day while waiting for our bus to come home I asked one of them (short girl with short black hair) if I could borrow a pen for 2 minutes, the reply I got you would have sworn I called her a rude name, so I gave up and walked away with the thought in my head that I only had a few minutes left before the bus picked me up and I would be out of there.
The only good thing about this hotel is it is only a 3 euro taxi ride from the lovely Amadores beach where we spent 4 out of the 7 days we were there.
This hotel is well over due for an upgrade which I think would turn it into a pleasant hotel, but we would never return here or recommend it to anyone.
SORRY.

Room Tip: Dont think there are any good rooms but the view from our room 2709 was nice overlooking the beach a...

Hi folks thats me and our party of 6 just back from a week at the Puerto azul Gran Canaria.this was our 1st experiance of all inclusive in gran canaria as we've only been self catering the last 6 yrs. The reception area is really nice and the reception staff are very helpfull and pleasent the pool area is clean with plenty of loungers and theres adult lounge areas which is good to be out of the way from the kids running around the bar is situated right next to the main pool which is good the dinning areas (2) are very nice and the food selection is of good quality with a wide variety, well we had a fussy eater in our group and she even said that theres something to eat for all tastes (result) the bar is self service for beer and soft drinks spirits are served by the bar staff who are really friendly, the rooms are really nice we were in room 4705 and what a view we had over the bay (result) but in the rooms 3 levels below us had a view of a hotel which is built right infront of the Azul, this only on this part of the hotel the whole complex is big with rooms running right round the hill side. maid service is 5 out of 7 days. entertainment at night from about 8 to 10:30 with the bar closing at 11. the europa ctr is a 5/10 min walk uphill the commercial ctr is about a 15/20 min walk downhill.Overall our experiance of the Puerto Azul is a positive experiance and we will be back again. I think that most people who go to this hotel will enjoy being there but you will get the few who eat caviar every day and stay in mansions moaning about something but you can't please every1 lol. So when you go here just enjoy yourselfs.

Room Tip: choose the 1 bedroom apt not a studio apt.

Stayed here a few years back as my first holiday away with a mate.
1) The check-in was quick and smooth, the receptionist was a great help. However, understanding how to get to our room via 2 lifts and some steps with suitcases that weighed a tonne proved difficult.
2.) The room was standard 3* but very spacious. We had an amazing balcony which has amazing sea views and views over the town. The beds were your usual hard beds that you get abroad, nothing different there really.
3.) me and my mate stayed all inclusive, meaning, we got fat. The food is your usual when you go away. Burgers, hot dogs and chips on tap. However, they did do some show cooking of an evening in the restaurant which was nice.
4.) The facilities were good, nice big pool and we loved the adult area on the cliff top overlooking the beach and sea. We went in June, and even from then it was difficult to get agood sun lounger, so we had to get up early even though we were out partying untill dawn
5.) The area surrounding the hotel is amazing, the town istself is lovely and only cost around 3 Euros in taxi. However. if you walk up the hill from the aparthotel there are a few shops and restaurants which are lovely.
All in all, a good stay away, would hate to stay here over a week though.

Room Tip: Get a room with sea view

Just returned from a week in this hotel. On arrival given complicated instructions involving 3 lifts and walks along the outdoor corridors to look for our room. Not easy to follow at all and the numbers of the rooms seemed to make no sense at all, but found a sign directing us back to reception. We asked for another room perhaps closer to reception but the hotel was fully booked, and we couldnt be moved. The receptionist however remained positive and professional and took us to our room but even she was hesitant as to if she had brought us the right way. She said that it is a common problem, and that they have to put up with many peoples frustrations when trying to locate their room, but despite her regularly informing management, nothing is done. Once in our room the view over the port was priceless and nice to have sun loungers on the balcony, but the room was tired and dated, the painted furniture was chipped, there was no air conditioning. A previous review mentioned that maid service didnt clean but made the beds. Even this wasnt done, but the bins were emptied. As usually when I travel, the complimentary shower gels etc are regularly replaced, on this occasion I only took travel size toilettries only to find that we were only provided with 4 sachets at the start of the holiday.
The pool area was fine and despite the hotel being full, there was never a shortage of sunbeds, and there is an area for over 18s as well as a sun terrace and the area around the pool.
We were happy with the food and despite being vegetarians we never went hungry.
The drinks - soft drinks, lager and wine were all self service, the lager was nice but the wine was horrid. I did try a few of the cocktails which are served from behind the bar but they were ready mixed and just tasted like fruit juice.
The entertainment was amateurish but quite funny because of it. This was in the pool bar which could be a bit chilly on an evening but there were some outdoor heaters. There is 1 other bar called the piano bar although it has no piano, no staff and the faux leather on all the chairs was peeling. But it has a fantasic view over the port.
As described it is very hilly but I misunderstood just how hilly. I had read that there was a bus service outside the hotel but was informed by the rep that this didnt run anymore. 709 steps down to the port. Taxis are cheap though.

Room Tip: As near to receptionas possible to save you from a hike whenever you need to go to your room.

We requested a room with a sea view having read that some rooms have a hotel in front of them. Could not fault the room which had a spectacular view. We had second sitting for dinner which meant there was no room on the outside terrace after as all the first sitting had taken all the seats. This meant we could not see the evening entertainment which for the most part looked reasonable. We found the food to be pretty boring and often cold. I know it's a 3 star but they could offer more choice and make it hot. The drive to cut down on staff has meant that soft drinks, wine, beer and coffee are all self service which meant there were no queues which is a big plus. You only have to queue for cocktails etc and they also had bottles of sparkling wine which is a first for us on a fully inclusive. The 700 steps are a challenge, but we did manage both down then up but a taxi is only a couple of euros so not expensive. The fireworks on New Year's Eve were possibly the best we have ever seen, with fireworks being let off around 3 bays and lasted for a good 15 minutes. I think it's good if you have children but not really for couples only. Also the outside jacuzzi in the adults only area is not heated! In December it's freezing which was a shame as we partly booked because of it.

Room Tip: E mail and ask for uninterrupted sea view. Room 3006 is fab, end of row.

Upon arrival at hotel, greeted pleasantly enough at reception and directed to room. On first inspection room was quite pleasant. Rooms cleaned 5 times weekly (Really this means beds made and towels changed, no actual cleaning. Toiletries not replenished when used...) Sheets changed midweek. Breakfast looked promising! Plenty of choice for either cooked or continental but unfortunately all cold even cooked breakfast. Ran out of fruit juices and glasses, only 1 toaster for whole hotel!!! Lunch times were disappointing to say the least. If you like burgers, sandwiches, hotdogs and pizza you're onto a winner here. Not much else apart from salad. Our evening meal time was 6.00 - 7.15pm. Don't be mistaken to think you can go in at 7.00pm as you will either be refused entry until 7.45 or told you have to be finished in 15 minutes as they close the dining room to clean and reset. This is obviously because they do not have enough crockery to serve all the guests. Extremely poor choice of menu but again if you like spaghetti bolgnese hey! it's on every lunch and evening! Unfortunately we are not fond of pasta. Most unhelpful dining staff I have ever been unfortunate enough to encounter. People walking around dining room in bare feet and some men with no shirts, not a pretty sight at meal times. Running out of spoons is a regular occurence and occasional chipped crockery to contend with. Luckily the hotel staff were not in control of weather which was the only highlight of the holiday. No wonder this "All Inclusive" hotel has a shop attached so at least there is a slight chance you can get something reasonable to cook in your apartment otherwise why provide you with microwave, toaster and cooking facilities etc. Also the bar staff obviously don't want to waste their time putting the customer first so be prepared to form a queue whilst they stand and chat amongst themselves and ignore you for 5 or 10 minutes before they grudgingly serve you. Would never have any intention of returning to this appalling hotel and would certainly advise other potential tourists to check other options before booking to come here
