Stayed here twice. Massive balcony which are sun traps. Pool very refreshing and the snack bar serves quite nice food for very little euros. The poolside can get quite noisy at times due to both the noise from wayward children and the music from the pool bar but you get used to it. Reception is on the top floor (due to the lay out of the apartments) and the lift goes down to the corridors and the pool. Bathrooms consist of bath type shower, there is a kitchen with an oven, hob and a fridge to keep your water. Beds are comfortable with lots of wardrobe space for your clothes. Safes are available for small charge.

Europa centre nearby which has lots of bars to choose from as well an supermarkets and arcades and souvenir shops.

It's around a 15 minute walk down into Puerto Rico itself via the hillside steps or you can get a taxi for 3 euro. The bottom commercial centre is massive with around 100+ bars and shops to choose from. You can hear the noise from it at night from up the hill (but not enough to keep you awake at night).

Lots of cats about.

We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor away from the noise of poolside.

Me and my sister (27 and 24yrs old) booked this hotel in January 2012 and paid approx. £240 all in flights, luggage, transfers, self-catering apartments, travel insurance and car park at Stansted from Travel Republic. For the week 13-20 June 2012 we specifically asked for a room on the 5th or 6th floor as I had read the reviews and they had the best views and there wasn’t too much walking up and down stairs. We arrived at 8.30pm and was greeted by a very polite receptionist, we asked for a safe which was 13 euros for the week and 12 euros deposit that you got back at the end of the week. We got a room on the 6th floor perfect.

The door into the apartment was a bit hard to get open, we stopped another holiday maker that showed us that you had to turn the key twice and then pull the door towards you and turn the key a tiny bit more and it would open - thank you random other holiday maker.

The apartment was very clean, you walked straight into the kitchen / lounge area with the bathroom to the right which had a sink, bday, toilet and large shower - we were supplied with 2 hand towels and 2 bath towels and 3 loo rolls sufficient enough for 2 of us for a week. There was no bar of soap or liquid soap to wash your hands with though so we did have to purchase that, only 90cents in the Babalu supermarket. The maids came in once in the week was there and changed the towels, made the beds, mopped the floor and cleaned up the plates we left in the sink.

Past the bathroom on the right was the bedroom on the right that had 2 single beds pushed together but with separate bedding on them. 2 bedside tables and a large wardrobe that the safe was at the bottom of. There was extra blankets in the wardrobe and about 10 hangers and some shelves to put your clothes / shoes. There was sufficient amount of plugs around the apartments we had took fans with us (USB fans with a USB plug) to keep the room cool at night which meant that we didn’t have to have the window or doors open letting in the bugs.

I didn’t see any cockroaches the whole time I was in the apartments or Puerto Rico whereas my mate than stayed up the road at Eden Apartments had 2 their first day.

There was a telly in the lounge area but you had to purchase the tv remote from reception and then pay a euro an hour to watch - we didn’t go on holiday to watch telly so didn’t. You can get extra pillows from the reception; they are super helpful and will get you a taxi etc...
The kitchen had a microwave and the usual kitchen stuff no cloth to wash up with though. I would recommend a taking a bottle opener as there wasn’t one. The balcony was huge and there was an amazing view of the sea and the three pools. The only disappointment was that you couldn’t see the sunset.

There is work currently being done to the apartments the lift is being replaced from April-12 to September -12 we were notified of this before we went by Travel republic and I had my concerns but I never heard anything. We left the apartments every day by 10am to catch the 10am bus down into Puerto Rico apart from Sunday when we got a taxi and 12noon and there was no noise. Because of the lift being replaced there was no evening entertainment at the hotel which was perfect if you wanted to go to sleep at 10pm cause the bar shut about 10pm. We went to Barbacoa Bar across the street every night which was awesome and a great laugh watching the tribute acts and Gary the host. Plus a jug of cocktail (5 glasses) was 12 euros!

I would definitely recommend getting a bus or taxi into Puerto Rico of Amadores because that hill is a killer im 27 and a healthy weight and my calves from walking down the hill on the first day hurt for 3 days after whenever i walked up or down a slight hill. The bus is really cheap 90cents and it runs hourly down into Puerto Rico to right near Mcdonalds and the Tourist Information centre and the main bus stop is around the corner. A taxi ranges from 2.75 - 3.95 depending on where you get it which is cheap than the bus if there is 4 of you sharing the cost.

The Babalu supermarket was cheaper for some things but we preferred the HyperDino in the Europa centre.

There is car parking just above the apartments where the bus stop is about a minute walk up a slight hill from the entrance to Babalu

On the last day we asked if we could keep the room until 6pm as our flight was at 7pm we could do this for 15euros which we did because then we didn’t have to worry about our cases all day. Just for information the reception is closed between 2pm and 4pm for a siesta and there is no receptionist we found this out when we went to hand our keys back in on the last day and had to leave them with a lady at the till in the Supermarket.

I would definitely recommend the trips below
Palmitos Park (3.10euros on the bus and then 28euros entrance)
Puerto Morgan on a boat (10euros) book with the girls in the hut next to the crazy golf in Puerto Rico town
Boat trip to see the dolphins and whales (25euros) Guarantee to see or another trip for free - book with the guy on the harbour - there was only 8 people on our boat and they take your pic as you get on.

I really enjoyed my stay in Babalu and would recommend to people who are looking for a base that isn’t right in the centre of Puerto Rico but has some restaurants, pubs, shops and supermarket nearby. Obviously I can’t comment on the sun bathing at the hotel because i didn’t stay the hotel during the day and sunbathe.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on floor 5 or 6 unless your a sunbather and want to be near the pool.

Myself, my boyfriend and 2 friends stayed in the Babalu 14th June for 1 week and throughly enjoyed ourselves. The rooms are basic but the large balcony and seaviews made up for this ( how much time do you actually spend in your room when on holiday!) As the rooms themselves are set off the main road there was no noise at night so it was very easy to get a peaceful night sleep. The lift not working meant that there was no on site entertainment but with all the nearby bars either in the Europa centre or in the centre at the bottom of the hill meant we were never bored. The pool bar was good to go to before going out at night because it was cheap and cheerful and Dave the barman was very helpful when it came to local info etc. You will need to get a taxi to most places but these are VERY cheap as were our food and drinks, most of our rounds never came to more than 10euro.
The pool area itself was nice, clean and never overcrowded. Would go here again.

My boyfriend and I (25 and 27yrs old) booked this as a last minute holiday for 1 week at the start of June 2012. After researching other reviews which raved about the hotel as great value for money, we went ahead and booked. Lets start with the positives...the pool is fantastic - very big, nice setting and plenty of sunbeds at any time of the day. It was also nice and quiet with no annoying kids running around! Another positive is that the hotel is right next to the Europa centre, so you can easily get hold of beers and snacks for your room at super cheap prices in the HyperDino supermarket (unless you want to pay three times the price in the hotel supermarket!)One more positive - the balconys are huge and the views over the ocean are great! On to the negatives - THEY ARE DOING EXTENSIVE BUILDING WORK which looks like it will go on all summer. The old lifts have been taken out and they are installing a new one. This involved a constant drilling and bashing from 8am until 6pm which is right beside the pool area. No one informed us of this before we left the UK and previous reviews on this site have made no reference to it SO BE WARNED!! Another negative was the pool bar - very old and run down in appearance and the bar man, Dave, who worked from 6pm was somewhat persistent in attracting the guests down from their balconys. While we stayed he would turn the mic on and shout up to people sitting on their balcony to come down for a drink and "help to support the hotel staff" etc. It was like a plea for charity!!I found this embarassing and desperate and it put us off going anywhere near the bar! He then plays loud music until midnight while sitting alone at an empty bar!Perhaps if the bar staff did some work to actually clean the place up and make it look a bit better, then they would have more customers coming instead of running away!!! The rooms were another negative. I always stay in basic accommodation when on holiday, but i found the rooms to be just too run down, with lots of cracked floor tiles, grubby bathrooms and chips out of the furniture. The maids changed our towels every other day, if we were lucky! Also, despite what other reviews might say, you most definitely have to get a taxi to anywhere (except the europa centre) as the apartments are in between Puerto Rico and Amadores so they are far from the resort centres. Taxis were approx. 3.85euro each way. All in all, we couldnt complain too much about our holiday because we got such a cheap deal and the resort itself has good bars and cheap food and drink, but it was not as good as we expected at the hotel, and now i see why no holiday companies have the property on their books!! If you are going to Puerto Rico this summer, our favourite place was Amadores beach and dinner at Ciao Ciao restuarant, as well as Bora Bora bar in the main commercial centre. Must see - Puerto de Mogan day trip on the ferry!

Room Tip: We got a room on the 3rd floor, right in the middle, so you only ever have to climb 3 levels at one...

Where do I start...

There were actually 2 good things about Babalu. 1 were the stray cats which hung out on our balcony, now whilst that is prob not the most hygienic attraction in the world, it was the highlight of our stay.
The second thing was that due to Babalu being so dirty, old, worn, tired looking and lacking in character, we promptly checked out and stayed in the comparative lap of luxury at the Gloria Palace up the road

If I were you, I'd avoid!!

We stayed at the Babalu apartments in September 2011 for a week self-catering. It was our first holiday abroad together and it was ideal for what we needed. It has a lovely pool area which wasn't overtaken by noisy children as we went outside of the summer holidays yet it was still really hot. It was a short taxi ride away from the town centre of Puerto Rico or Amadores - both with lovely beaches and restaurants. There was also a small complex behind the hotel which is ideal for a spot of lunch or to go for food shopping as there is a super market (ideal if you are self-catering). We also went there a couple of nights for drinks and food which was nice. The rooms were clean and spacious yet basic - the one thing I will say is that there is no air con. We hired a fan for the week which was €20 but didn't help that much as it just blew hot air! Overall it was a lovely holiday and was everything we wanted - would definitely recommend :)

Room Tip: Would recommend a high level room - lower floors had cockroaches! We had none and we were on the 4th...
