We flew out on Monday 2nd January 2012 for two weeks. Our fifth time to Gran Canaria, our third to Puerto Rico. We got transferred to the Riosol from its sister hotel, Los Veleros as they didn't have the two bedroom apartment that we had booked. Having stayed at the Riosol in 2010 we were quite happy to transfer to it rather than wait for a two bedroom apartment to become available at Los Veleros.
The manager Manuel Sastre personally showed us a couple of rooms we could transfer to and let us decide over a round of complementary drinks. He was very accomodating and offered us two days of half board for our family as a good will gesture because of the other hotel's "cock-up". We had room 5227 and despite what other people have said about this room being infested with cockroaches - it wasn't!!! It is round the side of the hotel so you don't get the sun in the morning, but you do get it from about 3pm onwards so lovely for an afternoon glass of wine on the little lawn area in front of the balcony. Manuel said we could move to a room on the front with the full sea view the next day, but we decided to stay in 5227 so we could unpack and start our holiday. We also received big bowl of fruit.
Lets face it you will get cockroaches in Spain and I can't understand people going on about them. Yes we saw them and had a few visit us but they are about. Live with it!!!! Get a glass and a bit of card and chuck 'em out.
The room was lovely and spacious and cleaned very well. Nice having two bathrooms too and showers were always fast flowing and hot! Kitchen equipment was okay, could have done with maybe a few extra utensils and a frying pan, but we made do and managed to cook some nice meals. Plenty of plug points. Outside table and chairs and two sunloungers too. There was a portable fan provided but we didn't need it
The buffet restaurant was lovely and we paid for extra meals which were a bargain. Much cheaper than eating in one of the restaurants in town with good selection of food and the wine a reasonable price too. Breakfasts also very good. Different theme to the food on offer each night, on a two week rolling basis.
My main critisism was the pools - they were cold!!! The top pool was meant to be heated and a couple of days it did feel warmish but it was generally cold. The bottom pool was freezing!! Saying that, it didn't stop the kids and they were in the pools all day every day!! Plenty of sunloungers and there is a shop for buying basics and a couple of pool tables and tennis court.
Evening entertainment is okay, bit cheesy but kids loved it. Good wi-fi area and internet connections. NIce reception area and views of the pool underwater. Staff all pleasent and friendly and spoke and understood English well.
A good hotel and the two bedroom apartments are lovely and big. Views are amazing. Short walk to the Europa Centre which quite frankly is bit chavvy. But there was a reasonable supermarket and the Extreeme Sports bar good for football games (and they''re Spurs fans too!!! Yay!) Wouldn't particulary recommend any of the restaurants, preferred the hotel in all honesty and good value for money. The mini-golf was good fun. Also, a walk to Amadores Beach is good to do and we got ferry to Puerto Morgan for the Friday market.
I would recommend this hotel and lives up to the standards of the prices they charge.
