“Like Riosol, Puerto Rico going down hill”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2011

We've just come back from a short stay at the Riosol which we last stayed at about 5 years ago. Riosol I would give 4 out of 5 but Puerto Rico only 2 - I'll come on to why a little later. The apartments are nice and have been upgraded since we last stayed. The bathrooms are nicely done as are the balconies. Cockroaches were a bit of a problem as they are in most hotels in Puerto Rico. The main problem we had with the apartment was the lack of air conditioning or a ceiling fan - due to the cockroaches you couldn't leave a window open during the night which resulted in a few sleepless nights due to the extreme heat. Either AC or just a fly screen on the bedroom window would be a big improvement. We stayed self catering so I can't comment on the food at the hotel.

So now for Puerto Rico - This was our 7th visit to Puerto Rico but our first for around 5 years, having stayed at numerous hotels mostly in the vacinity of the Europa Centre (top of the hill). Unfortunately this centre is now dying a death with a lot of the restaurants/bars closed down and the ones that were still open were deserted. We had a drink in the Turbo bar and at 1.30am there was only 6 of us in there. The main centre was also much quieter with the restaurants on the first floor all closed during the day and now only open in the evening. The beach was practically deserted and there are no longer the peddle boats and few restaurants/cafe's at the beach again due to them closing. I know it was before the school summer holidays but we never travelled to Gran Canaria during the holidays before and it was always much busier. We only stayed for 4 nights and spent over 700 Euro - that is the reason we will continue to holiday in places such as Turkey and avoid the Eurozone, everything was way overpriced.

I live in Gran Canaria, in Las Palmas city in the North of the Island, and I stayed in riosol every time I can with my husband and two children (carnivals, summer holidays or a long weekend during all the year). We are always looking for a peaceful, romantic and familiar place.

The weather is hot but nice at the same time during all year and that is what we want to relax and get a suntan. It has the best weather of the island.

The staff are helpfull and very professional. The two pools are lovely, one of them with a nice bar, and the food of the restaurant is great and not too expensive. There is a one-hour mini club for children five days a week and many other activities are organised for adults and children, including tennis, diving, archery ,aerobics, line dancing, music quizzes and shows. The entertainment was excellent and varied.

The hotel is on top of a hill, but if your are not old and love walking it is perfect.

The rooms were cleaned everyday. They have a great view of the harbour, large balcony and terrace.

Riversun has a great atmosphere and food. It is a lovely place for having holidays and I would highly recomend this hotel.

Just got back from a week at Riosol, our 13th year, normally twice a year. Great as always. I would recomend doing this direct and then getting a flight, you can get a much better deal that way.
we'll return again soon to see all our old friends, both staff and other holiday makers.

There are two recurring themes in most of the reviews for Riosol.
1. Cockroaches
2. Distance from the beach

Let me start by saying that my wife and I loved this holiday. Riosol provided everything you would expect at a high standard and we are very happy with the service we received.

So, on to the recurring themes....

1. Cockroaches
We saw one cockroach on our holiday and it was 15 miles away from Riosol in a restaurant. There are lots of reviews that talk of Riosol being dirty and cockroach-ridden. I can only assume that the refurbishment in 2008/9 took care of this as we had no problems in any of those departments.

2. Distance from the beach
Okay - so you have a stunning view over the harbour / beach, and yes, the apartments are a fair way up the hill. There are 650'ish steps to get down to the beach and it will knacker you out pretty quickly. But a Taxi is only about £3.50 - so not a big deal. If you're old (and I'll leave that to your own personal judgement) then I'd factor in a Taxi cost, if you're not, just man-up and get on with it, it'll only do you good....

Puerto Rico
We explored the island a fair bit and Puerto Rico is definitely the most peaceful and beautiful location. If you want clubs and nightlife give it a miss - this is a calm, slow-paced beach / harbour. Riosol is one of countless apartments / hotels spattered across the hillside. The sea is clear and calm, the weather is incredible (26c in February!) and the people are very friendly.

Puerto Rico - 5*
Riosol - 4* (because my legs still hurt)

Great holiday

The weather at this resort is perhaps the best on the island, far less windy than the south-east part. Beautiful view of the harbour, large balcony/terrace with the apartment. Staff are very professional and really sweet to the children. Maid cleans the apartment thoroughly five days a week. There is a one-hour mini club for children five days a week. Plenty of other activities are organised for adults and children, including tennis, diving, archery, table tennis and evening entertainment (but most of this started at 10pm, which was too late for our children). Really good value for money: we paid for half board and enjoyed fabulous breakfast and dinner buffets. We recommend walking down the 700 steps to the beach every day (and back up again!) to compensate for eating too much in the restaurant! Do beware the camera salesman in some of the shops in the Europa Centre - just walk on by or say you already have all the cameras/video recorders you need. Take the boat to Puerto de Mogán - there is one every hour or so - which is a beautiful fishing village 20 minutes away. There is a huge market there on Fridays. We loved the atmosphere of the hotel. People go back there year after year and we plan to do so. The evenings in the restaurant are like one big Danish birthday party. The swimming pools are too cold, but the top swimming pool is at least solar heated and bearable once you're moving.
