“You get what you pay for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Had our two week honeymoon here last september, the hotel is very clean, the staff are sort of friendly, the bar staff are great, and there is a good mix of evening entertainment, on the bad side, no air conditioning, and for anyone that has been the gran caneria you will now how hot the nights are.
On the plus side, your only a few mins walk from everything, on the bad side, the nightclubs and there music will keep you awake till 5 am, and Puerto Rico has most of there hotels built up the cliffs of a valley, so lots of stairs to the hotel, our best guess, 186 stair if you took the right side stairs, 216 if you took the left, lol.
I got a nasty ear infection from the pool while staying there, so did many guests at the time, still waiting for the hotel to settle this issue with me. so dont trust the swimming pool.
the shop and bar are very over priced for the area, try the local brews rather than our imported beers, you can find pubs selling for as little as 1.50 a pint.
Dont book connecting travel from the airport, you will pay a lot more, the local bus station runs hourly buses and at only 8 euro each it is alot cheaper, the taxis are very cheap, so dont go paying 30-40 per person.

when booking these appartments we did it as a package deal with thomson. it was the cheapest for the area we wanted at that time, so booked it as we only really needed a base, the reviews for this place were mixed so we were a little bit worried but read between the lines, a negative on previous reviews was about the steps to and from the commercial center to the hotel, when we got there we realised that practically every form of accomodation within that area is on a hill. not just cala d or , in the 2 weeks we were there the steps got easier and my calfs a little firmer, we did them most days (up and down) and sometimes more than one return journey, another negative review i had read was that the sun didn't come on to the balconies and pool side until the afternoon, again every single appartment/hotel that side of the center has the same problem as it is set on a hill side, i think it is actually not a bad thing as when the sun does come over (about 11.00 am ) it is very strong, the rooms were extremely basic and we did encounter the odd cockroach, we spoke to somebody about this from another very upmarket complex and were informed that they are a problem all over the canaries, we didn't let it ruin our holiday, there is a hotel cat who tends to keep them at bay, the cala d or staff were excellent, we could not fault any of them, we were only going to use this as a base and visit another complex (pre planned) but we ended up spending more and more time here as the staff were so good, the little snack bar menu is limited but very good, i had chicken salad and chips twice and both times excellent €6.50, jano makes a mean sangria too, Javi is head of entertainment, what can i say.. he is there to please, he remembers every ones name, is genuinly nice but not over bearing, all four of us were very fond of him, the reception staff seemed a little more reserved but again were extremely helpful, we actually got fond of them too, the negatives are mainly down to holiday makers, who go to pool at 9am and put towels on the sunbeds and not use them for hours, we only did it twice but went straight down after breakfast, the sun beds are not already lay out, you have to get them yourselves and are chained up until 9am which does stop the early morning takeover of them, i must say that the pool and sun area although a bit tatty and worn is very clean, although the ladies toilet door doesn't close. (although just realised i should have reported it) there is a little shop run by reception, quite expensive but very convenient, fresh baked rolls from there are good. the hyper dino in the comercial center is very reasonable for groceries if needed, a negative is having to pay for wifi, i did use free wifi in a few restaurants in the center so didn't need to pay but think that if it was free a few people may stay in the complex instead of venturing off out. you have to pay for the tv too, but i was quite happy to have it switched off, i would stay here again the reasonable prices reflect the accomodation but the staff were priceless, excellent

We stayed at the Cala d'or the first week in March. Staff friendly, apartments clean but a bit outdated but nonetheless comfortable. This is the 2nd time we have stayed at these apartments and both times the balcony we have had didn't get he sun until late afternoon. Entertainment programme very basic at this time of the year. Pool bar drink and food prices very reasonable. Location of apartments was excellent. They are very near to the main resort centre. We had a great week.

Room Tip: Above pool area if possible, 2nd or 3rd floor.

We stayed at the Cala d'or from the 29th Dec to the 5th Jan. The weather was fab. We had a brilliant time. After reading some reviews we were a little concerned, but there was no need. There was maid service daily, activity around the pool and friendly staff. The only down side is the pool doesn't get any sun until the afternoon. We met large group of great people who have been returning to the same apartments for 8 years.
Yes, it can be noisy, but being so central, this cant be helped. The food served at the pool bar was very good and quite cheap.
Would we go back, YES

my husband and I stayed here for two weeks over the christmas, wall to wall sunshine the whole time. the sad thing about this accomadation is that we were put at the very bottom of the cala d'o, with no sunshine until mid to late afternoon due to a hotel next door shading it. the rooms were clean ish could do with a good top and bottom with bleach. Plenty of room in the apartment with all the facilitys you need. We found two really good eating places one is called the RE ROSE cafe/restuarnt down to the left along the harbour wall where all the sunbeds are in a passageway. home cooked breakfast for 5 euro with 2 each of bacon, egg, sausages, toms beand toast and a MUG of coffee, Evenings we went to the Miami run by a family of moroccans and food to die for excellent. Back to the Cala d'or this is very large with 4 floors the whole top four floors were full of scandanavians ane we the brits were put on te ground floor with a wall too look at. Very disappointed would not stay here again.

Room Tip: ask for a room above the ground floor

The hotel is nice, and the room was spacious and clean. It is by no means a luxury feel over it, but i liked it. A closet and a couple of dressers made it easy to keep the room tidy. The room is cleaned 5 days a week, and the staff was friendly and helpful. If you are traveling with a charter airline, there is a rep/guide at the hotel several times a week to help you out, and to arrange trips and excursions around the island. There is entertainment during both the day and evening, so it is probably a nice place for families. The pool was not heated, and too cold for my liking, but the outside area was nice with a good view.

There are a couple of stairs from the road so you have to carry your luggage up to the reception. But there is an elevator from there. And talking about stairs - there are almost 200 steps from the shopping centre up to the hotel. Quite the climb. But it gets easier after a few days. There are small shops close by on the road of the hotel, and supermarkets in the shopping centre. The room has a fridge, stove, a toaster and a kettle, so it is no problem cooking up some food there.

The cons. Yes, I saw 3 cockroaches the 2 weeks we were there. No big deal really.
No sun on balcony and outside area, until after midday. This was in December.
It gets a bit noisy from the pool area, with music and kids. And late night, until 4 in the morning, there is loud music from the bars in the shopping centre. If you like silence and calm, I don't really think Puerto Rico is for you anyways, choose Mogan instead.

Overall, I was very pleased with the hotel, we had no problems at all, and had a lovely vacation.
