We stayed at the Altair for a week in January 2014 from 20th - 27th. Having just returned I want to express how much of a fantastic holiday we had both here at the hotel and in the resort of Puerto Rico itself.
When we arrived at the hotel the member of staff on reception was very friendly and checked us in as quickly as possible before directing us to our room. Yes there are a lot of steps due to the location of the hotel and the fact that Puerto Rico is set in a valley. Although there are two lifts in the hotel. One up to the pool and bar and another up to the rooms themselves. This makes it a lot easier when transporting your suitcases but throughout the rest of our holiday we didn't mind taking the stairs and admiring the view on the way up! If you want a view from your room, the higher the better. We we're on the fourth floor and it was absolutely beautiful.
As for people saying the hotel isn't clean, it's rubbish! The maids came to our room five days out of the seven we stayed and changed the towels each time. This meant the only days they didn't was the day after we arrived and the day just before we left, which makes perfect sense! (They even did the washing up if there was something we forget before we went out for the day!) We ourselves also woke up to a cockroach one morning. (It's the Canaries!!!) However upon reporting it to reception the maid came straight away and removed it! We had no more problems, other than the one that ran over my foot in the supermarket!!
The only two downsides of the location of the hotel are that due to side of the valley it is on the sun doesn't reach the pool till around about lunch time so can be a little chilly up till then! The other is that, like many have mentioned before me, the noise from the shopping centre below does travel and can be loud up till around 4am. (Didn't bother us too much after walking back up the stairs from resort we were shattered!)
Overall though the hotel was absolutely lovely and every member of staff that we came into contact with was friendly and helpful. The two cons are definitely outweighed by all the good things about the hotel and standard of the rooms and I would recommend the Altair to others.
With regards to the resort of Puerto Rico it is a stunning place. There is so much to explore and even in the nearby resorts as well. Starting with the shopping centre they're is so much choice for food. You can literally eat your way around the world. The only con is the staff pestering you to choose their restaurant but it is easy enough to say no and move on. To touch on a couple briefly our favourite was the restaurant San Miguel on the lower floor in the shopping centre, perfect all round and definitely worth a visit. Our least favourite on the other hand was restaurant Mephisto on the top floor. (Don't go - horrible food and uninterested staff!)
Bar wise - Riders bar was fab and well known but a little on the pricey side. Looking for somewhere cheap Piccadillys music bar does plenty of drinks deals along with karaoke and a quiz most nights .
Last but not least just a couple of places that are worth a mention. Make sure you take a walk along the cliff front to the resort of Amadores and its beach. The views along the way are ones not to miss. We did this twice to appreciate the sunset also. Another place is Puerto Mogan just a bit further along the coast. Easy to get to just by local bus around about half an hour away and nicknamed the little Venice.
I would love to return to Gran Canaria and see some of the sights I didn't get to in just that one week.
