“Fab hotel and resort!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

We stayed at the Altair for a week in January 2014 from 20th - 27th. Having just returned I want to express how much of a fantastic holiday we had both here at the hotel and in the resort of Puerto Rico itself.

When we arrived at the hotel the member of staff on reception was very friendly and checked us in as quickly as possible before directing us to our room. Yes there are a lot of steps due to the location of the hotel and the fact that Puerto Rico is set in a valley. Although there are two lifts in the hotel. One up to the pool and bar and another up to the rooms themselves. This makes it a lot easier when transporting your suitcases but throughout the rest of our holiday we didn't mind taking the stairs and admiring the view on the way up! If you want a view from your room, the higher the better. We we're on the fourth floor and it was absolutely beautiful.

As for people saying the hotel isn't clean, it's rubbish! The maids came to our room five days out of the seven we stayed and changed the towels each time. This meant the only days they didn't was the day after we arrived and the day just before we left, which makes perfect sense! (They even did the washing up if there was something we forget before we went out for the day!) We ourselves also woke up to a cockroach one morning. (It's the Canaries!!!) However upon reporting it to reception the maid came straight away and removed it! We had no more problems, other than the one that ran over my foot in the supermarket!!

The only two downsides of the location of the hotel are that due to side of the valley it is on the sun doesn't reach the pool till around about lunch time so can be a little chilly up till then! The other is that, like many have mentioned before me, the noise from the shopping centre below does travel and can be loud up till around 4am. (Didn't bother us too much after walking back up the stairs from resort we were shattered!)

Overall though the hotel was absolutely lovely and every member of staff that we came into contact with was friendly and helpful. The two cons are definitely outweighed by all the good things about the hotel and standard of the rooms and I would recommend the Altair to others.

With regards to the resort of Puerto Rico it is a stunning place. There is so much to explore and even in the nearby resorts as well. Starting with the shopping centre they're is so much choice for food. You can literally eat your way around the world. The only con is the staff pestering you to choose their restaurant but it is easy enough to say no and move on. To touch on a couple briefly our favourite was the restaurant San Miguel on the lower floor in the shopping centre, perfect all round and definitely worth a visit. Our least favourite on the other hand was restaurant Mephisto on the top floor. (Don't go - horrible food and uninterested staff!)

Bar wise - Riders bar was fab and well known but a little on the pricey side. Looking for somewhere cheap Piccadillys music bar does plenty of drinks deals along with karaoke and a quiz most nights .

Last but not least just a couple of places that are worth a mention. Make sure you take a walk along the cliff front to the resort of Amadores and its beach. The views along the way are ones not to miss. We did this twice to appreciate the sunset also. Another place is Puerto Mogan just a bit further along the coast. Easy to get to just by local bus around about half an hour away and nicknamed the little Venice.

I would love to return to Gran Canaria and see some of the sights I didn't get to in just that one week.

Stayed here for 11 nights, in September.
As everyone says, they are on the hillside, but virtually all complexes are in Puerto Rico. The noise and music from commercial center does travel, and it rarely stops before 5 am. After that it's great to be able to open the doors, and sleep. It's great having sliding doors from lounge and bedroom onto the large balcony. The views are fab, if you are in floor 4,5 or 6. We were on floor 5, and could see the whole resort, beach, harbour etc.
The complex has been refurbished to an excellent standard. Clean, modern and comfortable. And just the right size for 2. The beds were of a decent quality, but bed linens and towels are in need of replacing. It is a fairly quiet and relaxing complex, and there were always sun beds available during our time there. The on site pool bar is only open until 6 pm, with no bar after that, so that kinda keeps things quiet. The bar has a good selection, and simple snacks and breakfasts are available at reasonable cost. The on site shop is not anything too great. But it saves lugging large bottles of juice and water up the hill. We thought the TV set up was fab, activate a viewing card at reception for however many days you want, and you get a vast amount of channels. Mainly your free view ones, bbc3 & itv2 etc. we certainly had a few cockroaches, but it is the canaries! Report them to reception, and they will be dealt with. No problem with mozzies, thankfully.
I would return to the Altair, at some point, knowing its clean, comfortable, and value for money. But I do not intend to rush back to GC! It is what it is, and you would tire of it, it's kinda a case of been, seen, done!

Having been to Puerto Rico 12 times, we booked these apartments. Arrived to a nice looking complex and modern.
But we were disappointed, the towels changed once and no clean sheets in a week
Don't get us wrong they are clean when you arrive but the standard after that is poor, a quick sweep if your lucky. When we complained on checking out we were told if we needed clean towels and sheets we have to ask. We were fuming with the attitude of the receptionist
He didn't give a damn and 3 receptionists are men who never smile. If your a Scandi they ok with you as that what the area is now trying to attract

Room Tip: Ask for clean towels and sheets

We had two lovely weeks at this site and managed to prepare a decent meal each evening with locally sourced produce using the basic but adequate facilities. Yes the site is up a steep hill but to be honest you need a bit of exercise on holiday, it can't all be eating drinking and relaxing. Can it? The site is modern and bright with lovely views across the bay. The significant down side is the noise from the commercial centre at the bottom of the valley. Such a shame because this site would have otherwise achieved full marks from me (across the board). Clearly there is nothing that the management can do about this but if you dont mind noise this place is a great base from which to explore. Spotlessly clean and well maintained but a few pesky cockroaches seemed to be atracted to my chorizo and butter bean casserole! The room maid obliged with super nitro deluxe spray to get rid of the blighters.
All in all, lovely apartments and worth a visit if you are looking for good value in a modern complex.

just back from these apartments must say i was really pleased at the layout and overall look of this complex . yes its up the hill but so is 90% of the hotels here . we asked for a low floor and got what we requested. as for the noise yes u can here it but its a holiday area with people enjoying themselves so u do expect it to be a bit loud. the overall area is getting a lot of work done this year most hotels are getting a facelift i have been to gran canaria 5 times and they do need to upgrade and like this one they r doing a great job theyre fresh n bright, airy with great balconies no air con is a bit of a set back but for the price id no complaints .u can use the cala dor next door as well they have entertainment at night if you dont want to go to the complex at the bottom . if you fancy eating out i would recommend sabitans at the front of the commercial complex and if its an indian the happy valley on top floor is great .

Room Tip: its a great view from the 3rd floor upwards .if you have kids ask for first floor they are next t po...

Lovely apartments, but its situated right up the hill from shopping centre, so if you cant walk the hills, its not for you, and also, the music is pumping while your trying to sleep and no air con, so you couldn't open the door cos then the music was louder, it was like sleeping in noisy furness, so if you wanna sleep peacefully, don't go for these. The receptionist was a sleaze, watching you every time you walked past, and trying to chat you up.

Room Tip: if you have trouble walking or are going for peace and quiet, don't bother

Overall I enjoyed my time at the Altair, I was there for two weeks with my partner and didn't really have that many issues. I'll start off with the pros of the hotel:
Firstly rooms are very nice, quite big and cleaned on a daily basis. The balcony is also very big. We stayed on the sixth floor, I would recommend getting a room above the 3rd floor as people can see into the these rooms while at the pool. The pool area was enjoyable and well maintained, the english girl serving behind the bar was very friendly and helpful.
The cons:
Obviously alot of the apartments in puerto rico don't come with air conditioning including these ones, the hotel offers fans to rent for 15 euros a week however when we arrived they didn't have any left (I heard certain families saying they rented more than one, this should change) and we asked about 6 times over the course of the two weeks to rent one however constantly none left! This made it abit of a nightmare as to try and keep cool at night we left the balcony doors slightly open which then brought all the noise in from the complex at the bottom of the valley (loud music continues until 4am). If they don't have fans you can go to the supermarkets/shops in the complex and rent fans cheaper than the hotel anyway.
We had a evening flight and were getting picked up at 6pm, however late check out was only availible until 3pm and at a cost of 20 euros so a bit pointless really. However they do give you a shower/changing facility under reception which is handy if you want to sunbathe while you wait.
Paying for the safe was abit steep however tv was generally good value.
So overall a good resort.

Puerto rico itself, the beach is very nice, for food we went to the complex on the first night however it was all very samey and you can't even look at a menu without getting dragged in to a restaurant so we ended up dining at the complex next to the beach for the rest of the holiday where there was plenty of lovely restaurants (rhodes greek restaurant and the italian next to it were amazing) . However there was a good restaurant called pinoccios in the complex which was authentic italian and only did italian unlike the other "Italian" restaurants in the complex which were also Steakhouses, Mexican, Spanish and Chinese!

Room Tip: Top three floors as no privacy on bottom three floors.
