“Great location, basic facilities and customer services. Very poor food options”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013 via mobile

In such great location HACE should make an effort to bring Hotel Jerez's standars to town. The rooms are too basic and small. The buffet and the restaurant offer a very poor choice. I had two bad incidents with customer service. It needs management's hands on. Location is great.

This was my 3rd year in a row staying at the Hotel Playa de la Luz and I look forward to it every year. The staff is excellent. The hotel is excellent and located on a very nice spot of the beach. Great food on site or close to the area.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the pool side!

Stayed 5 days end of June 2013 on B&B to allow trips out.Economy room (227) booked through Travel Republic at a great price (other rooms with extras such as sea view have surcharges). Had own small terrace, table, chairs & sunbeds, view out onto quiet quadrangle. Staff superb, room well appointed, super air-con, bathroom excellent, front desk so helpful - in every language! Food at breakfast extensive & faultless - even chilled Cava, tablecloths changed between clients! Pool always clean although lifeguards often absent, water cool during our stay, may be due to unusually high winds; bar service to pool-side tables a delight. Evening food good quality but tapas (our preferred meals) generally limited though seemed better in Sherry bar. Evening meals seemed a bit pricey for us at over 20euros. Drinks not overpriced and 'happy hour' even better. Parking on-site 'limited' or pay but we'd no problems for free, adjacent road available. Space round the pool seemed adequate at tables or lounger on the grass. Hotel right onto the beach, huge terrace. Long beach walk into town or local bus directly into town where daily transport to Cadiz by boat, or if inclement conditions, coach.

Room Tip: Used prior info to avoid poolside room. Be bold & ask for what tou want, the staff are happy to...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

I returned from a 10 day stay at Hotel Playa de la Luz on Saturday, and I would like to comment on how nice our stay was.

My boyfriend and I were given room 130, which is a small double room right by the pool. The size of the room was more than made up for by the fact that we had our own small terrace directly in front of the pool, complete with sunloungers. This meant that we only had to step outside our door to sunbathe or jump in the pool.

The breakfast buffet was extremely good, with fresh pancakes and omelettes being made to request. They also had bottles of Cava available next to the juices, so you could celebrate your holiday at any opportunity!

We stayed bed&breakfast only, so I can't comment on the dinner buffet. I would only sat that I thought it seemed rather expensive at €22 per person...I knew that I'd never eat €22 worth of food (not being a big eater),and we found that we could eat out in town for about the same amount for both of us.

The hotel is about a 2 mile walk from the town centre of Rota. I measured the distance on my Iphone as we walked to town quite a few times, and it took us about 35 - 40 minutes to get there. You can either walk straight down the beach or along the raised walkways through the wooded dunes. If you are looking for a hotel with lots of bars and restaurants nearby, this probably isn't the right option for you as it is quite a walk. You can get the bus, but we preferred to walk as we like keeping fit. We got a taxi back from town one night after dinner as we were being lazy, and it only cost €5, so this is a good option for those not wanting to walk so far.

There are lots of tapas bars and restaurants in Rota, and it is completely traditionally Spanish - you will not find any places directed towards the English tourist market. We did not find this to be a problem as I speak Spanish, but others may struggle as the waiters did not really speak English (not that they should be expected to). We ate in the terrace restaurant at the hotel on 3 nights, as they do excellent food and at very reasonable prices - for example, a whole fresh fish with potato and salad was around €15, and a grilled chicken breast with potatoes was about €10.

The hotel has a rooftop terrace which is beautiful - it has white loungers, balinese beds and a separate pool. It is free for hotel guests to enter, and then we paid €10 to have a double balinese bed for the day, which I thought was very reasonable. You can also have massages in this area, which seemed to be fairly reasonably priced.

I would advise that you will probably need a car if you do visit the hotel as there isn't even a supermarket nearby - the closest is about a 10 minute drive away. We went there once and stocked up on bottled water and crisps to snack on at lunchtimes and that lasted us the 10 days we were there. We visited Cádiz and Jerez in our car while we were there and I would highly recommend both. Again, they are both very traditionally Spanish, but I found Jerez to be slightly more touristy than Cádiz.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and thought it was very relaxing and peaceful. We would definitely recommend the hotel to active couples looking for a traditionally Spanish break in the sun.

I will upload some photos soon, but take my word for it - this is a great hotel :)

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor by the pool give you a small terrace, table and chairs and sunloungers.

We stayed here for the May half term with our 3 children and 3 other families with young children. we had a wonderful week. The family rooms are spacious and clean - the staff are wonderful and the buffet restaurant is good. Disappointing that the menu for Bar Sherry didn't have more tapas styled dishes as it was the only real option for lunch given it was not yet high season but that is a small complaint in what was a great week.

For those wanting a hotel literally on a beach then this is ideal. The long wide terrace which has sun loungers and umbrellas supplied by the hotel leads directly onto the sandy beach and at high tide you are just a few paces away. If you do not want to swim in the sea then a large pool surrounded by lawns and tables & chairs is excellent plus another chlorine free pool in the Wellness centre which is very secluded and offers another form of relaxation.
The room provided was quite a unique one being on the corner of the front row of rooms facing the sea and had a small balcony with a table and 2 chairs plus a wide double bed and nice bathroom with 2 hand basins. There are a number of different styles of rooms from the basic ones which have a small patio for sitting out to some more superior ones and with different aspects, so good to select one that suits.
The breakfast buffet was well arranged with good selections. Did not try the evening buffet as wanted to explore the town which is a few kms from the hotel ...either a 30 minutes stroll or there is a local bus number 2 passing quite frequently or a taxi may cost about E. 4. The Rota town is most interesting with the old original part containing nice restaurants and bars and you can visit the marina with its fish market and places for fish meals and from the marina you could take the catamaran ferry over to Cadiz old city for a pleasant excursion.
One of the nice features of the hotel position is that you can walk along the neach passing the "corrales" ancient fish pens as far as Punta Candor which has a perfect beach as well as showers and beach bar.

Room Tip: study the different room options as the hotel offers quite a variety !
