Our stay at Fagiolari was simply magical, and though the stories of the rocky approach road to the property are all true, a slow lazy drive down the bumpy road reveals surprises of its own - from bird sightings in the vineyard (a cuckoo, redtail hawk) to a family of Golden retrievers jubilantly greeting all comers.
We booked our stay with Giulieta, who has a marvelous, sprightly grasp of English and made sure our arrival and stay (not to mention the wonderful feast she prepared for us) were part of the memorable experience.
She thoughtfully reserved the stone cabin (steps from the pool) for our stay, making for a quiet and secluded retreat - needless to say we slept great. The room itself was spacious and airy, with a wonderful view of San Leolino church and the surrounding hillside. The room was arranged such that self-catering was certainly an option, though we limited our meal-making to the occasional assembling of salami, cheese and artichoke sandwiches over bottles of Tuscan vino.
Dinner was nothing fancy, just fresh, healthy and clearly homemade, with all the wine we could drink (for 25 euro, a deal). Giulieta's breakfasts are very well organized and she even kept breakfast open when we overslept on the last day of our stay.
I would highly recommend Fagiolari to anybody, unless you are looking for 5-star amenities (500 thread sheets, etc.) or convenient in-and-out access, but for value, service and a serene Tuscan experience, I cannot imagine staying anywhere else. Plus, the town of Panzano has a magic all its own - ancient streets, local macelleria, formagerie and gelateria - so we felt that we hit the Tuscan jackpot in finding Fagiolari. Giulieta has created the total package.
