“A real find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

Keen to share the delights of the Ring of Kerry and the Skellig Ring, we randomly chose the Moorings. It was a real find, delightful hotel, good breakfasts and plenty of it, and we ate in the restaurant every evening.

We arrived in Portmagee after driving part of the Ring of Kerry on a beautiful sunny (cold) day. The lady in reception was so kind, welcoming and efficient. Once we dropped our bags at the room we took a drive over to Valenica Island! WOW!! We had visited the Cliffs of Moher earlier in the week, but I have to say, the Fogher Cliffs were by far a better experience. After our sightseeing of Valenica Island we ate dinner in the restaurant. There was a nice warm fire burning and the wait staff was very at tentative. The food was very good and the serving sizes plentiful! I wish we could have stayed longer than one night as this is such a cozy, quiet Guesthouse with so many things to see and do. A+ on the hospitality!

Room Tip: Book a Harbour View Room!

On Good Friday we travelled for a scuba diving weekend in Portmagee. We arrived in sunshine to this beautiful port town with the fresh salt sea air cleared the cobwebs of winter.
We travelled as a family of five- two adults, one teenager, one energetic four year old and one 19 month old. We stayed at the gorgeous moorings in a room that had a double, two singles and spotless travel cot all set up for us. It was spacious, bright, clean, welcoming, friendly . . .Everything tired parents want to find with small children in tow. It was so lovely to stay there.

The food in the restaurant could only be described as amazing. Even the baby bowl I asked for my son was tasty and interesting. It was what I as a mother would consider "going the extra mile". The fish is to die for and all locally sourced. You can witness the fisherman on the pier yards away across the road as proof of this

There are interesting things to do around the town. We travelled to the Skelligs chocolate factory, we went on the cliff walk, we went to a nearby beach, we went to the playground, we travelled across the bridge to Valentia island in search of the candle making factory. . . .And saw lots and lots and lots of sheep.

In all a very enjoyable trip and friendly locals made our stay fun and our hotel made it fabulous.

Half way around the Ring of Kerry, with great views of the harbour and Valentia Island, which is worth spending a whole day on - great walks and views. We would have liked to take the boat trip to the Skerries but got to the visitor's centre just too late.

Room Tip: Sea view worth the extra.

Have now had two expériences of Portmagee hospitality, once on site and once in associated self-catering house. Whichever option you choose, this award-winner mérits thé many plaudits it has received. Good food, great atmosphere, superior service, à decent réal ale option would make it perfect but quality porter is no hardship. Prices à bit painful but that's the Republic for you. Location is pretty amazing too

I cant even begin to explain how great this place was. It was spotless you could have your dinner in the toilet with no concerns. The food was outstanding. But the staff were even better. We visited the whole island of Valentia and loved every minute. Came back to a fab dinner and a room so comfertable . jacussi bath so relaxing. Fisherman bar a couple of door down is the craic. Breakfast is the best I have ever had . We will visit again. Keep up the good work this is what ireland is known for. Best of luck in the future

Room Tip: request a room with view of harbour

One doesn't have a wealth of accommodation options in Portmagee, and this is regarded as the pick of them. The room was comfortable, the staff were friendly, and the location was perfect. However, the breakfast was substandard, which was disappointing, as dinner the night before in the restaurant was delicious, and the guesthouse itself is a little bit pricey. Overall though, a good place to stay.
