“All about location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

One doesn't have a wealth of accommodation options in Portmagee, and this is regarded as the pick of them. The room was comfortable, the staff were friendly, and the location was perfect. However, the breakfast was substandard, which was disappointing, as dinner the night before in the restaurant was delicious, and the guesthouse itself is a little bit pricey. Overall though, a good place to stay.

Not many choices in the small fishing village, but this is a great one. Friendly staff, great rooms and everything you need is right here. Can't wait to make a return visit. The locals dance and play traditional music a couple if nights a week, makes for a great experience.

My husband and I stayed for five nights at The Moorings and thoroughly enjoyed it. The welcome was as warm as they come...from all the staff! Very pleased with the room, very clean, the bed was super big, would have prefered a seperate shower and not over the bath but knew this when booking. So no complaints re the room. The view was to die for...I thought my husband was going to sleep sitting up so not to miss it...well he is a Marine Engineer!!
Breakfast was very good, tried the Lemon Dover Sole on the recommendation of the waitress and had it for three mornings..can't stress how fresh it is..scrumptious. Very attentive waiting on staff, they might consider a caffitiere for each table during breakfast, this would free the staff during busy periods.
Opted to eat in the bar rather than the dinning room, the roast dinners were great with lots of meat.
Went over to Valentia Island, first stop was St Brendan's well, do not go there unless you have a 4x4..horrendous road with great big holes in it. Not a lot to see when you eventually get there. Being Nov most of the Hotels, eating places are shut...as expected.
Well worth a visit is the Skellig Island heritage Centre directly opposite The Moorings, very interesting.
There was a local band playing on the Friday night when we were there, we didn't go down to listen as we were worn out with sightseeing. To be honest we didn't hear the music, we expected it to be loud but pleasantly surprised how muted it was.
The local waitress that served us in the morning is a fountain of information, please don't hesitate to ask her about the locality, stories, myths etc etc
So overall a thouroughly enjoyable stay at The Moorings, very good food, service and fab location.

Room Tip: We had the room at the front, fantastic views. Very quiet in Nov.

We stayed for 3 days and had the time of our lives. Beautiful, clean and quiet rooms, very comfortable beds. Located directly at the harbour. Breakfast is served in the comfy Moorings restaurant with views on Valentia Island and the harbour. Breakfast includes the full range you can think of, including fresh local fish and a fantastic homemade brown bread! The staff is very friendly and helpful, both in the B&B and the Moorings pub. The pub by the way also is a must, they serve excellent food. We will certainly be back in 2013!

I stayed at the Moorings Guesthouse in Portmagee on what was the worst night of weather our Vagabond Tour group experienced during our 12 day tour of Ireland – drenching rain and hurricane-force winds. In that regard, the Moorings Guesthouse provided us with a warm and welcoming environment, a pleasant shelter from the storm. Overall, my experience at the Moorings Guesthouse was a positive one and the agreeable accommodation and good food that was provided helped to assuage my disappointment over not being able to visit Skellig Michael because of the inclement weather and rough seas.

With respect to the accommodation provided at the Moorings, I was quite satisfied overall. My room was clean, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was immaculate, and the shower provided plenty of hot water. One thing I should mention, however, is that most, if not all, of the rooms are on the second floor of the building and there is no lift/elevator on the premises; one therefore has to transport one’s luggage up a set of stairs. This wasn’t a problem or issue for me but it might be for some guests. That being said, I’m sure that if one requires help in carrying luggage, management and staff at the Guesthouse would be only too happy to provide assistance.

I had both dinner and breakfast at the Moorings Guesthouse. The restaurant possesses a nautical theme and does so with a great deal of panache, I think. Overall the restaurant is a warm and convivial place to have a meal. Portmagee is a fishing town and thus it should come as no surprise that most of the main courses on the restaurant’s menu involve either fish or seafood. Although I love fish (especially salmon) I’m not fond of seafood (mussels, clams, lobster, shrimp etc.) and the night I had dinner I guess most of the specials on the menu must have involved seafood because I ended up ordering the vegetarian option. The meal was good, but didn't impress me to the same extent as other dinners I had in Ireland. Breakfast the next morning, however, was superb. I should also note that the service provided by restaurant staff at both dinner and breakfast was first-rate.

So basically, I don’t think visitors to Portmagee can go wrong if they choose The Moorings Guesthouse as a place to stay.

Beautiful rooms, right on the water. Great restaurant and pub. The owners and staff are wonderful. The food was superb and this guesthouse should be considered a dining destination. Gerard Kennedy, one of the owners, actually sat down with us for part of our dinner. The bar was filled with friendly people and the bar staff were most accomodating. This guesthouse is a wonderful and truly Irish escape from the maddening crowds along the other areas on the Ring of Kerry. Please note that you must drive 11 km's off the main Ring of Kerry road to reach The Moorings. The staff can arrange for a Skellig boat trip as well.

Room Tip: Paying extra for the harbor view rooms is a great idea.

This place is like a large B&B - run by a family. Rooms are nice. Service is excellent. The restaurant in the place is also very, very good. Portmagee is a nice little village right on the water and The Moorings is located in the center of town - very convenient to boats to Skellig Michael.
