“A Nice Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

The Ariston is a nice hotel with a simple offer of bed and breakfast at a good price. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and extremely clean, with sheets and towels changed daily. Some of the rooms overlook the sea and some just look down on to the road which is the main road into the village and can get busy at times so it might be an idea to ask for a room at the back of the building. Rooms are equipped with TV and air-conditioning at no extra charge. The buffet breakfast is simple but plentiful and consists of the usual bread, jam, cheese, ham, fruit, yoghurt, honey, but we were offered toast, fried and boiled eggs and bacon too. The manager, Martin from Dortmund is a real character and is always around to offer help and advice. If you are used to a quiet breakfast you may find that this takes some getting used to but he is a genuinely nice guy who will do anything to help you to have a nice holiday. If you are driving, car parking space is tight and very limited but there are other places available to park, including a huge harbour area. The hotel is at the top of the village but is only a matter of a few minutes from the beach and downtown areas, but save some energy for the walk home up the steep hill.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter. Don't park there if you have a big car.

Had an enjoyable night at the Astoria while visiting Agia Galini on our South Coast touring by car. Martin, the manager, is quite helpful and we enjoyed our stay in a very comfortable and clean room. The breakfast was just enough to get you going in the morning and it is a short (but steep) walk down to the town and harbor. We took Martin's recommendation of Kamos to eat at that evening and were not disappointed. This stay and the town was one our highlights of Crete and much more enjoyable than the hectic South.

We grew to like Martin the Manager a lot. He seemed quite brusque at first but that was after he hauled two massive cases to the top floor with a bad back! His daily pontifications and helpful hints, often delivered whilst we were having multi language conversations with other guests were very enlightenming.

Be aware that the Astoria is at the top of a hill but take your time and it is no problem, but I would not recommend to anyone with walking disabilities. We much enjoyed it!

Agia Galini is one of the last original Greek resorts in Crete and in my opinion altogether a far better experience that resorts on the North coast.

In common with most places in Crete, the rooms in the Astoria do not come with a kettle, so if you pine for the early mornning cuppa take your own!

My wife have been to Agia Galini many times and stayed at different hotels, but for us the Astoria is the best.
Martin the manager is very helpful and will organize taxis or car hire for you if you need.
The rooms are very clean and all have good views, the breakfast is also good with everything you need
to start your day.Its always nice to sit in the bar and have a cold beer with Martin before heading out
to the village for a meal (Try Kosmas Taverna for real greek cooking ).
If you like good music try the Blue Bar near the harbour, good beer and hospitality.

\We were in this hotel in august, and we liked Martin (the manager) and the way he is taking care of the hotel. Although not on the beach, it is very close, and it is also close to the center of the village. The hotel is nice and clean, and most of the visitors are germans. I think it is mostly for couples, and not that much for families with kids, as there is not garden or area to play. The parking might be a small problem, as the parking lot is very small.

The Hotel Astoria in Agia Galini is run by an avuncular German and seems to cater particularly to the German holiday trade. We booked with Martin directly via e-mail, and no payment was required until we came to check out.

Our room was excellent - air conditioned, en-suite and with a balcony with a sea view (just about) - and a hearty breakfast was also included in the price.

Locationwise, the Astoria sits on the edge of town - and was very easy to find (quite a relief given the apparent lack of maps) - and is about 5-10 minutes walk from the beach and tavern areas.

Thoroughly recommended.
