“Lovely view from rooms but up a very steep road from the beach, car a must.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Just back from this hotel. Overall the hotel was very good although the breakfast was very basic and didn't vary from day to day other than by offering either boiled or fried eggs. Hotel was very clean and has a lovely peaceful pool area. Towels were cleaned daily but sheets only once per week. The room was not big enough for 4, it would be more suited to 2 people. Staff were very friendly with one in particular who was more than helpful, her name was Aspa. She was always smiling with sincerity and would go out of her way to help. The cleaning ladies were also very nice and worked very hard but always seemed to be shadowed by a male supervisor whose role was questionable. The bedroom was not air conditioned and was very hot at night and it meant the door to the living area which had air conditioning had to be left open at all times. I would recommend this hotel to people who want a relaxing break.

sweet spot close to Heraklion but away from it all.Took us about 20 mins to get there from airport(watch for the hard right turn off highway)

We started our trip here and came back before we left because it felt like home.Nice rooms, great views and loved the pool and private feeling. The breakfasts were huge and tasty too!For me its the perfect kind of travel hotel, clean and away from hustle and bustle. The staff couldn't be more pleasant..

If/when I go back to Crete and I will be back to the Happy Cretan

The hotel in August was almost empty. We got a very very nice completely renovated suite with 2 balconies. The decoration was perfect with a very good taste. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was especially well prepared with local specialties.
Even though the staff was very friendly it is true that they were very few of them and the first day they did no make the room. But all the rest compensated and we of course did not complaint. We have to add that the price was very correct: 75,- eur per night (breakfast included).

Just booked again at this complex for June and look forward to it . This is a review for September 2011 was our 3rd time at Happy Cretan. You may pay a little more for these Stone rooms but it is a gated complex with spectacular view and a calm relaxed feel. The gym is basic but adequate for a good training, cycle machine. treadmill gym ball and free weights we used it most mornings and it was fine. It also has a open air saltwater pool with an outdoor Jacuzzi spa. The restaurant is good with a full breakfast available for only 6 euro. Another great thing just opened within walking distance is the large modern supermarket which is so close you can use it as a corner shop. The only thing I would recommend is to hire a car as the complex is on the edge of the village had a car and never found it a problem but if you had to get taxis it could get expensive as there is very little within easy walking distance other than the supermarket. Take an ipod or similar as the hotel and gym have the facility to play your own music. I must say a special thank you to the staff especially Dimitris and Giannis who are polite and helpful and nothing was to much of a problem even the unforeseen breakages caused by those unforgiving stone floors. Thanks for a great holiday!!! See you soon.

Room Tip: If you want to rest and relax don't rent a car but with a car this complex is perfect to explore...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

My wife and I have just returned from Happy Cretan where we spent one week (August 2009). This was our 10th visit to Crete of which the last four was in Happy Cretan.

The hotel is up on a hillside (breathtaking views over the sea from many of the rooms) over Agia Pelagia a small atmospheric village.

Happy Cretan is an ideal getaway for those who seek a peaceful and quiet relaxing holiday with exceptional hospitality. The hotel grounds are nicely kept with a nice pool scene (again, beautiful views from the pooldeck), fitness room for a more active relaxation and free wifi for those who can't have a break. There is a nice diner where Antoni, the owner, will prepare your breakfast (I could kill for those croissants) or anything you would like during the day or in the evening.

There is only two things that can be a problem> One is that it may be too quiet for some people and the other is that the bathrooms are a little bit worn. Having read earlier posts I would like to point out that we always had daily room cleaning and the enitre hotel was always kept very clean, in fact, you can hardly find a cleaner pool anywhere.

Here are a few tips that can help you make the most out of your stay:
1. Rent a car or at least a scooter to be able to acces any of the nearby beaches and the village (Agia Pelagia has sandy beach other beaches are rocky). These are 3 mins away by car but I do not recommend walking because of the steep hills.
2. Try to book rooms on the first floor as the view is a bit nicer from there.
3. You can also try the stone suites but ask for the ones that have views. These rooms are more modern but lack the small kithcen of the apartments and studios.
4. Ask Antoni for a mojito in the evening :)

If you are in need of some relaxation do not hesitate to book.

What an excellent, friendly and clean place to stay! We have stayed here several times and love the family run atmosphere of the Happy Cretan. The food is cooked fresh, and to a high standard, the accommodation is clean and the views spectacular! If you are in a high stress job as I am and need a quality break, you must come and stay here. The pool and surrounding areas are kept to a high standard, the family made pastries are a must!
