“A hidden gem, worth the travel to get there”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2011

We are very happy with our spontaneous decision to stay here. We had spent 2 weeks up in dusty Santa Teresa/Mal Pais and needed to breathe some fresh air and see some wildlife. Found this place on trip advisor and we're very happy we did. Only spent 2 nights in Villa La Paloma, but it was spotless clean (unlike our other stays in costa rica), Paul was a great host, and we saw amazing birds. The hot tub was great, we had the utmost privacy and the view of the river below was soothing. I've enclosed some great pic's of the villa itself. It's about 2.5km off the main hwy through Uvita and the road isn't in perfect shape, but they were working on it when we were there and we'd stay there again in a heartbeat. We did not take advantage of the restaurant which is there as they are only doing private reservations at this time.

We started planning to come back to this piece of paradise on our drive away last year. We loved both the villas and the Uvita area so much, we promised ourselves we'd come again soon. We were not disappointed.
We have stayed in both the villas and loved them both. Sarah has a great eye for decor. They are equipped with everything you need to enjoy your stay here, with super comfy beds, TV/DVD's if you want, hammocks, kitchen, lounge chairs, outdoor dining.... We used the barbeque one night on our patio under the stars, followed by relaxing in the hottub. Sarah cooked us a gourmet meal another night_to die for! We also swam in the pool everyday at the end of our exploring the nearby beaches and activities.
We returned to the "whale tail" beach, truly spectacular. Watched surfers at Domincal beach. Spent time at Hacienda Baru hiking. And Playa Hermosa was a deserted, pristine beach, ideal for a day of reading and playing in the waves.
From this location you could also head south to explore the mangroves in Sierpe, or Osa. We had just come from Drake Bay so kept close to our home away from home.
Sarah and Paul have built a beautiful serene escape here and you couldn't find a better place or people. If you have pets at home you can also miss them a bit less by making friends with their birds, cats and dogs.
You can get as much or as little attention as you want here, so don't hesitate to ask for help with your activities if you want, but your hosts won't intrude if you're just after a little r&r.
I highly recommend Villas de las Aves to anyone (with a 4x4), you couldn't possibly regret a decision to stay here.

Hard to find enough superlatives to describe our stay at villas de las aves. Wonderful hosts, fantastic location, great decor (we stayed in the Villa Paloma), stunning scenery, superb cooking. Was hard to drag ourselves away from the bird watching to visit other locations, but definitely worth walking some of the nearby beaches, doing the snorkeling trip to Cano Island, visiting local waterfalls if you get the time. Thanks so much Sarah and Paul for a truly memorable week.

Villa de las Aves is a perfect place to stay if you have several days in Uvita. It is quiet, private and situated on a beautiful piece of property. The kitchen was great so that we could cook our own breakfast and coffee. We were able to walk to a nearby waterfall and swim, as well as use Villa as a good base for exploring the southern coast area.
Paul and Sarah were very pleasant and helpful, throughout our stay. Sarah picked up some fresh tuna for us while she was out getting supplies that we cooked one evening. They provided great recommendations on what to do and where to go.
Highly recommend getting a home made pizza from Sarah while you are there. Just what we needed upon arrival. Casita was nicely furnished, very comfortable and had everything that we needed.

I don't have enough good things to say about "villa de las aves". I just returned from a week there with my 5 year old son and my new girlfriend and i'm almost afraid to write this review in fear it will be booked when I try and return. I have been traveling to Costa Rica for 12 years and have never felt so at home. Thanks Paul and Sarah!!

Last week we stayed at Villas de Las Aves for three nights. Paul and Sarah ( the owners) simply added luxury to paradise. Nestled in the mountains only minutes from the beaches, they have created a beautiful get away retreat, overlooking the two creeks running down from the mountains above. Waking up to only the sounds of the running creek and nature was wonderful and yet the accomodations are luxurious with full amenities. I would strongly recommend this place for anyone visiting Cost Rica, who wants to be a part of the abundant wild life and scenery this place has to offer. We had an amazing time.
