“No frills, only nature'and hospitality.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2010

I stayed in La Cusinga for about a week in April 2010. La Cusinga offered me a unique experience in the tropics. Its beauty comes from the well protected nature that nourishes every moment of the day with monkeys, birds, insects, crabs, ocean waves... T

here are exciting track paths and a quiet beach with a small rainfall. La Cusinga is paradise for those who long for nature - no grill smoke, no upbeat music, no elevators, no frills. Food is great. Rooms are clean. Team is friendly.

Go there if you are fed up with the "hygenic" authenticity of boutique hotels and you are looking for "authentic" authenticity. You will have to walk about 10 mins in the rainforest to reach the ocean. You will wake up with howling monkeys. Moths will land on your laptop as you work.

Breathe in the view from La Cusinga's perch on the edge of the ocean. Gaze out and follow pelicans flying in formation, toucans flapping to rest on nearby branches and a wild assortment of flycatchers you've never seen before. Dine on exquisite local, organic cuisine prepared with artistry and presented with care. Laugh with Geinier and his friendly staff as you try to absorb everything around you from the howler monkeys to the hammocks set up to catch the breeze.
If you want bright lights and sequined dresses, go elsewhere. But if bountiful nature, clean air and flip flops are your style - La Cusinga is the only place to stay on the Southwest Costa Rican coast!

As a seasoned traveler, I've seen, and stayed in, all sorts of places. La Cusinga ranks in my Top 5 of all time in terms of food, beauty, and services. The meals are simple and purely Costa Rican, but gourmet quality! The facilities are mind-blowing--not 5 star hotel stuff, but stunning in their beauty and simplicity (I kept expecting to see faeries or hobbits sneaking about!)! Everything is clean and healthy, there are local trails around the property and down to the private beach at the base of the cliffs. A yoga center with outdoor showers has recently been added. Howler monkeys greet you each morning, coatis wander about looking for fruit, and puffbirds chatter at you from the trees that line the deck in the evenings. This is an eco-lodge in the truest sense of the word--you are immersed in the Costa Rican rainforest (expect to hear geckos laughing at you the entire time you're there!), but it's an easy taxi ride into the town of Uvita should you need an ATM or a night out. I highly recommend Genier Guzman and his place, and hope to go back soon!

What a great find in such a beautiful setting. We spent five glorious days( which start early as the howler monkeys outside of casita rev up at about 5am) at this beautiful ecolodge on the coast south of Uvita. The casita is not air conditioned but the design is light and breezy and the beauty makes up for the heat of mid-afternoon. The staff is so helpful and the adventure package of 3 sea-going adventures was a perfect way to get away from mid-day heat on land. It is hard to describe how beautiful the sunset on the deck can be and it is topped only by the stroll down to the restaurant where the view is only surpassed by the food. A meal by David is a work of art and would hold its own against the finest restaurants anywhere in the world. Does the view make the food better or vice versa? The staff at La Cusinga is very helpful and still seem to get a kick out of the sightings of monkeys and toucans like we did. This may not be the best place for families as the hike to the beach is long, hard, hot and not worthwhile at high tide and there is no pool but we loved it as did the other adults we met on the community deck. It was the highlight of our trip and we will always love the memories of La Cusinga.

I stayed at La Cusinga for 8 days with 20 other colleagues. These people really care about care about environment and people. Situated inside the rain forest and within walking distance from the beach, this is the place to go if you are interested eco tourism. Toucan and monkeys are a common sight. Watch birds in the morning and the sunset in the evening. Go for night walk to see nocturnal creatures. Take dip in the ocean. If you want even more you can go to the town, Uvita.
I went running almost every day through trails inside the forest to the beach. An amazing experience. Click on this link to see my Garmin data of 3 mile fun run. http://connect.garmin.com/player/28434987
Even more amazing is the food. Chef of the Jungle Chef makes the best food and it doesn't get any healthier. Click on this link to check his blog. http://chefofthejungle.blogspot.com/ The staff knew everyone.
BTW this place is not meant for anyone who wants to eat junk food, or cannot sleep with sounds birds chirping and monkeys howling.
Run through the trails in the rain forest to the beach

We were looking forward to the many walks and trails at this lodge. However, we were shown to a double room that was nothing like those shown on the web site, and was so uninviting that we left, in spite of having prepaid for four nights.

Unlike the photos, the room:
- was not roomy - it was almost filled by two double beds
- was not airy and filled with light
- did not have a large balcony - it had a small, dark balcony with a bench and rocker
- did not have a walkout to a nice patio with a hammock
- did not have a table nor any chairs. Going back to the room after dinner the choice would be to sit on the bed or lie on the bed.

We were not looking for luxury, just comfort. This room was so uninviting that we decided immediately not to stay.

The room was very overpriced. We have stayed in much roomier, better furnished, better situated rooms around Costa Rica for at least 1/3 less than we were charged for this sad double.

Dear dhoyle,

this proof that not all hotels are made for everyone... 117 out of 121 people has loved the place according to the tripadvisor reviews. We do not have master suites or presidential suites.

We are a nature eco lodge, the room that you where giving have a great view to the ocean, at our website we show the rooms as they are!

We are very sorry that you did not stay to enjoy our place. Not sure what your expectations where, as the travel agent was also a bit surprised to see you reaction to our place.

Sorry that your expectation where not fullfil. But we do take pride in what we do and our reviews, our national and world recognitions by visitors, travel agents, certification agencies are witness of our efforts.

I do hope you had a good trip in the rest of your trip. And again sorry that our place was not what you expected. But in no way do be mislead people in our webside or reservation process.

thank you for your review, as positive and negative feedback makes as aware of our Strenghts and weakness.

Lovely rooms, beautiful sunsets, great walks, lonely beach with wild sea was beautiful, and the animal noises were so exciting they kept me awake, despite the comfortable beds. I hope we can go back. Our hosts looked after us well were generous with their breakfasts and cooked fresh wholesome and tasty food. Great breakfasts.

Rooms were private, gardens and surroundings a delight.
