My husband and I had originally planned to stay at Cascada Verde Hostel for about a week. After a few days, we had already booked to stay for an extra week and a half. Our time here was spectacular!
First of all, the location is the best we've experienced in all our travels. If you want peaceful getaway, this is the place. It located a 5 minute walk to the Cascada Waterfall which is gorgeous and the pools are deep enough where you can swim in them. A MUST SEE!! Even if you are not staying at this hostel and just going to Uvita, they are amazing! There are also plenty of other hikes that you can do around the hostel by checking out different nearby roads and there are so many other activities and tours to do around Uvita. The hostel is located at a 30 minute walk from Uvita (ie. bank, shops, supermarket) and an hour walk from the beach. 30 minutes sounds and seems like a long time the first time, it really isn't. It's a nice to walk into town and when you are lounging around on the terrace and in hammocks, it's good to get in some light exercise.
Secondly, safety. Uvita is a pretty safe place where we walked around during all different hours and always felt very comfortable. However, I would suggest that if you are walking back to the hostel, try to be back by around 5. That is when it starts to get dark, the road is made out of stones and it could be easy to trip and hurt yourself over the rocks. And use your common sense.
Thirdly, the hostel itself. What you see in the pictures, is really what you get, which is great! Sooo many places look nothing like the pictures once you arrive, but this isn't one of them. Actually, the photos do not do the atmosphere and the openness of the hostel justice. All rooms have bug netting although there are not that many bugs, even at night. The private rooms with ensuites are huge, have fans (important!) and very nice! The non ensuite rooms are just as nice and well sized. The bathrooms are super clean and the showers have hot water. The kitchen is massive and it is FULLY STOCKED (not like well stocked and there is one pan and one pot, there are dozens of pots and pans, dozens of plates and bowls,... get the idea?). We bought our groceries from the supermarket and made most of our own meals. It was nice after being on the road for so long that making your own meal is a blessing sometimes. On the main floor there is plenty of room to sit down and eat or relax. There are hammocks everywhere, couches, and dining areas. The eating/chill area leads out into a garden area where there is a pond, sooo pretty! On the top floor there is a terrace that gives you a view over the trees and over the pond. I'm fairly certain we spent more time sitting on that terrace in rocking chairs just relaxing, than anywhere else in the hostel.
Lastly, the new managers (since December 2012), Julie, Stephan and baby Lucie, are incredibly nice! They will assist you with anything and everything. If they were going into town and you need a ride, they will give you one. If there is something that needs to be fixed, they are right on it. They are fabulous! They also have yoga classes that are offered M, W , F at the hostel, movie nights on Sundays and breakfasts and dinners organized everyday which you can participate in or not. These are a great way to meet people and the food is delicious! Sometimes it's just nice to not have to cook for yourself.
Cascada Verde Hostel has been our home away from home so far and we were sad to leave. A must stay!!! Don't miss out!
If you are in a private room with an ensuite and you have your choice of rooms, pick one of the room...
