“beautiful, quiet, clean and nice hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

We just came back from our Costa Rica trip and we went to many nice and way more expansive places than Cascada Verde, but this place is awesome.
Pipper and Pawel two lovely hosts welcomed us as the only guests beside a young family and gave us very useful information.
We red before some mixed reports about the place, but found out that the people running it have changed and we ware very surprised. We did a great waterfall tour with Pawel and had some fun days on the beach and the nearby waterfalls.
Cascada Verde is a great place to come with family, helpful and friendly hosts and every dollar worth to stay.
Best wishes for your stay!

I had heard great things about Cascada Verde, but unfortunately the reality did not match the hype. The place could be more described as a "hippy lodge" built out of junk material. The place is also a complete fire hazard. A quick look at their electrical system showed a very dangerous situation possibly in the making.

When we first arrived to Cascada verde, we imagined some kind of paradise lodge. Instead, the rooms are poorly designed, uncomfortable, and nothing works as advertised.

We were told by several local businesses to stay away from this place, as the owner, a German-born expat who lives next door (Patrick?), also has a very bad reputation in this town.

It was overall a very bad stay and we would not recommend it to anyone.

I can absolutely not recommend this lodge and especially not the tours they offer. I stayed there for 8 nights and my first impression was quite positive. But when I was back home, I noticed that the lodge’s boss had debited way too much from my credit card for the tours. So I asked him if there had been an error and he told me immediately that I was right and promised to transfer the amount. However, some months later, the staff still gave me empty promises and lame excuses. For example, they said that the boss didn’t have time to do the transfer because he was in Nicaragua at the moment… Until now, I haven’t received any money. Obviously, they are trying to make up for the relatively moderate prices by cheating on the guests.

We booked our stay after reading positive reviews and guidebook endorsements; it is obvious that times have changed for the worst. There is no evidence that this hotel is an ecolodge. None of the amenities, services or ambience advertised on the website were available. For example, no kitchen use, no pool, no restaurant, no services... and the waterfall is a public attraction for $1, a short walk away on the main road. We learned that the hotel has an owner(s) and management rotates (our stay was with Maria and Pipper). Best to actually telephone the hotel to get a feel and actual details of services offered, as both can change without notice.

The most disapointing aspect though was the lack of hospitality. Upon arrival we were bombarded with the warnings about what they don't offer. We actually wanted to leave only a few minutes after arriving as we immediately had a bad vibe but felt they would charge us for the entire booking. They did not have our HostelWorld.com booking, and we were lectured (read: yelled at) about booking tours with the tourist info centre rather than the hotel. We pusposely stayed away from the hotel as much as possible to enjoy all that uvita/bahia has to offer. This was the only place on our 2 week vacation in Costa Rica were we felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. As one of the few guests who actually stayed there, we felt like we were treated with suspicion and given new rules each day. We can't say the staff were malicious, we really just think they had no experience and didn't like their roles at the hotel, as evidenced by the constant fighting between staff.

It is really too bad because the actual lodge is beautiful, surrounded by lush forest, howler monkeys, birds and a gorgeous ocean vista. Uvita is also an amazing place. To cap off our stay, they charged us the deposit we paid on Hostelworld.com, added a 10% service charge (was reimbursed after a heated exchange) on top of the VAT. They said it was for cleaning services; our room was never cleaned in 3 nights (oh? we were supposed to ask for that?). We ate one meal there and it was double the cost of other options in the area. Actually we felt like we inconvenienced the staff by having them prepare us food.

All this said, we played "stay away from Cascada Verde" on our trip to Uvita so we actually got to meet some cool people hanging around other hotels/hostels in the area. We would NEVER recommend this place under it's current (Feb 2012) management or if you are looking for an ecolodge experience....consider yourselves warned.

Room Tip: Note: privacy is limited due to an open ceiling throughout the lodge. You can hear everything from r...

This place is not at all like the website they have. My husband and I had one of the worst nights sleep of our lives here due to the ceiling of the room being partially open to the outside. Light from a hallway light kept shining into our room through a large open area above the door making it impossible to sleep. My husband would turn the light off, and then someone would promptly turn it back on. Also, the walls were paper thin. We had to sleep under a bug net which is not the end of the world...it just wasn't what I had expected. We originally booked 2 nights but got out of there after 1 agonizing night. The man at the reception desk was creepy and didn't really speak English. The whole place felt unsafe and weird. Would not recommend to anyone.

We totally agree to the previous post of Minnie M. We also booked this lodge in advance via hostelworld and were dissapointed about the current owner/staff which obviously changed during the last year. We booked a private room with bathroom and paid partly in advance but on our arrival only a room with shared bathroom was available and they said hostelworld is responsible for this fault without any apologize. We were there on christmas and booked a 'special' dinner for $30p./P which was served at 22:45 (it was supposed to be around 8p.m.) which we found way too expensive since it was only main dish which was salad an chicken or pork. Also there were people who expected vegetarian food and were not informed about the change.

We see a lot of great reviews of this place (which was the reason we came here), but we experienced that there is a new owner at the Cascada Verde lodge.

First, we would like to emphasize that Cascada Verde is a very nice place with great rooms, a beautiful yoga deck with a nice view and beautiful surroundings. We had a good time the days we were there, but it wasn't as expected. We paid our 7 nights stay in advance, from monday to monday.

We booked a week via hostelworld.com, because if you book a week or longer you get a nice discount. Otherwise we would have only booked for 3-4 days. So we booked a week, and the price was +/- 11 euro per person per night via hostelworld.

Then we saw on the website of Cascada Verde that the week's discount was not valid from 15-31 december, and we had booked from 12-19 december (first 13-20 but we changed our mind to a day earlier). So we emailed the owner to ask whether our reservation was valid for this period. He said it was not valid and because of the high season we have to pay $45 per night for a room. This is almost twice as much as before! But we thought the lodge would be very nice and accepted that the high season prices were much higher.

The whole period we were staying there, there was only one other room occupied out of 11 rooms. We asked why this was the case and the volunteers (really nice guys) answered that the real high season still had to begin. So we felt a little bit weird about paying the higher price. Anyway, this wouldn't have been a problem for us if the stay was as we expected. We expected some things that were on the paper flyer we picked up at a hostel in San Jose, and on the Cascada Verde website. For instance, the flyer and/or website say:

-free daily yoga
-belly dance & meditation classes
-tai-chi & chi kung classes
-massage only $25 an hour
-inexpensive vegetarian meals
-spanish classes available
-permaculture garden

These are all things that were not available at the Cascada Verde. So in our opinion, we paid much more but received less. Therefore, after 4 nights, we decided that we wanted to move on travelling to another place. There were 3 people from the US who left on thursday, at least two days earlier than they planned (but they were smart enough to pay per day). So we are sure we are not the only ones who had a problem with the state of the stay/lodge as it was now. Moreover, half of the time there was no water available. There was no emergency water supply. The kitchen was unhygienic.

So concluding, already on Thursday morning we decided to leave. We asked someone to call the boss to make our complaints but he was constantly not available. Then it was Friday and the people said that the owner was coming to the lodge that day. We decided to wait for this but he did not come at all. So we emailed the owner on Friday to explain the situation. Until now, we haven't received ANY answer to our email, and did not get our money for the 2 last nights back. This is especially disappointing; that things are not going the way they should, we can understand, but the owner not communicating with us at all is insulting to us. Someone in charge should ALWAYS be available in a place like this.

We hope that the new owner will fix these problems and if so, this place definitely has the potential to become a nice retreat place.

If you are looking for a nice room and nothing else: go here. If you are looking for a holistic retreat center: don't go here.
