“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2010

My girlfriend and I stayed for 5 nights in March. We were not 100% sure what to expect and ended up really enjoying this place. If you are looking for a large resort with enormous pools, multiple bars, and on the beach, this is not the place. If you really want to relax, this is the place. The Villa was very cool! Floor to ceiling glass with jungle all around you. Don't let the glass scare you as there are floor to ceiling shades as well. The main area is small and very nice. Infinity pool that looks a few miles to the ocean and an area to eat. I was skeptical, but the food was outstanding. Aside from breakfast and lunch, they offer a surprise dinner nightly for a really good price (Think it was around $25). We ended up eating there most nights as the dinners were so good!!!! The owners are as good as it gets. They were a great resource for things to do in the area. They are extremely helpful, but at the same time give you your space. If you are looking for a romantic type place without the distractions of TV and hundreds of guests, this is the place. I have recommended it to many already. It is not on the ocean, but is only a 15 minute drive.

P.S. When they say you need a 4wd vehicle, they mean it! We had 4wd drive Bego and it did just fine. Enjoy!

I've travelled a fair amount - including a trip from Alaska to Argentina - and stayed in my fair share of hotels, so when I say that Oxygen Villas is the best I've been to you have some frame of reference.

We arrived after a lot of trouble at another Uvita hotel the previous evening, some issues with our reservation had led to us having to argue at check in AND check out in the humidity, so we drove up the trail to find Oxygen with some trepidation. When we arrived the experience could not have been more different, Edwin and his staff were waiting for us and everything was taken care of while we sat beside the pool drinking and cooling off.

The hotel was like a small part of Bali transplanted into the pristine pacific Costa Rican rainforest. Except that at Oxygen you can wake up at 6am and sit out front in the cool of the morning listening to Howler Monkeys woofing, and spot Toucans and Hummingbirds in the jungle. The layout of the hotel has been given a lot of thought and although the pool/restaurant area is only a few steps away, the rooms are very quiet and secluded. The excellent airconditioning was a big plus and you could shut the glass doors on the jungle and be nice and cool in a few minutes. We were booked in for two nights and immediately asked to extend our stay to three, this was taken care of by the staff without any fuss at all.

There is a small trail back into the rainforest and you can swim under a little waterfall, surrounded by noisy cicadas. Perfect for cooling off in the heat. My top tip :)

The food in the restaurant was delicious, and two nights we enjoyed the "surprise" menu for dinner. The chef is simply first class. I could easily recommend just staying there to eat...

But what makes this place is the staff. They were extremely polite and professional, and stayed out of your way unless you needed them. We were travelling with my parents-in-law (Bill and Linda say hi by the way, Edwin) and Edwin always took the time to talk, nothing was ever too much trouble. Not often hotel owners do that.

It's been several months since we stayed at Oxygen Jungle Villas but often when the family chat the talk strays back to our stay there. And we look forward to returning.

Fraser.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Oxygen for 8 nights in July and we truly loved every minute of our trip. It was relaxing, scenic, beautiful.... Amazing! I had high expectations of Oxygen because of all the great reviews on Trip Advisor, plus it was on Conde Nast Traveler's Hot List 2010. All of my expectations were not just met but exceeded!!

The Balinese style villas are not too far from the clubhouse but each one is perfectly set-up to provide total privacy. Our villa (we had #4 which was great) was very impressively designed. They thought of all the little details - fully adjustable lighting, hidden AC unit with a remote near the bed, outdoor covered patio with huge couch and ottoman, very cool double sinks made of river rocks from Indonesia, mini DVD/iPod/CD player, etc. The four poster bed was huge, with comfy soft linens & mosquito nets (just for show - we had NO problem at all with bugs inside). We loved falling asleep to the rain at night and waking up to the ocean view through our glass walls. We never even shut the front curtains because we loved the sunshine waking us up early every morning.

The clubhouse is a combination of restaurant, pool, and front desk. The small size of Oxygen was one of our favorite aspects of the resort - we felt like it was our private retreat sometimes, with so few others around.

The design of the clubhouse area & the infinity pool (actually, the grounds in general) is so beautiful. It carries on the Balinese feeling of the villas - I can't rave about it enough!! All around the property there are gorgeous tropical plants & flowers.

The owners, Flora & Edwin, are fantastic. With such a small hotel they are able to give personal attention to all of the guests, often stopping to chat over meals or when you're by the pool - but never overbearing, just so friendly and welcoming. They also give great recommendations for activities and restaurants, along with personalized maps. The rest of the staff that we met were really 3 sweet girls who did everything from bringing us drinks by the pool to serving meals to making sure towels were stocked.

We ate the 4+ course "surprise dinner" 7 out of 8 nights at Oxygen. The chef didn't disappoint - everything was delicious. We loved that he planned a special menu based on what was available & fresh that day. There were very few dishes that we didn't LOVE - and absolutely nothing that we disliked. The breakfast options are somewhat limited but the pancakes, eggs, and fresh fruit that we had everyday were very good. I recommend buying some snacks & drinks at the grocery store (there are a few in Uvita) for munching on during the day.

There are a few ways to get to Oxygen once you're in CR - we flew into San Jose and drove to Uvita. The roads were easy & fine for the most part though the going was slower due to rain. We were really glad to have freedom to get around in our own vehicle once we were there - and they aren't kidding, a 4 x 4 is absolutely essential to drive up to Oxygen. The first time going up the mountain was a bit stressful for me (the backseat driver) but after a few more times up & down it was no problem. Yes, its steep & bumpy but totally doable - don't let it stop you from venturing out!

This is not a vacation with crazy nightlife but there's no shortage of activities in the area. We relaxed most of the days but we did enjoy driving up & down the coast, checked out beaches, did a zipline tour, went ATV-ing, etc. There was definitely a lot more that we didn't see and do - even if you aren't the "lay out and read" type you will find plenty to keep you busy.

We are definitely planning on a return trip to Costa Rica and it will include a stay at Oxygen - its wonderful! Go and enjoy!

I traveled to Oxygen last month with 4 other friends with some skepticism over how great all the reviews I read were...... but let me tell you all of the great reviews are true! Oxygen is truly a great place to stay. The staff is outstanding and the grounds and location is absolutely beautiful. The views from Oxygen are amazing and the accomodations are very unique. Flora, Edwin, and the entire staff made our stay as pleasant as possible. They are a great resource to learn more about the area and they even arranged for all of the activities we did in the area, which included a surfing lesson, ziplining tour, and horseback riding tour to a local waterfall. Edwin even arranged dinner reservations for a restaurant off the property for us one night (although the food at Oxygen is the best around!). Despite being more of a couples resort, our group had a great time. If you are looking for a place to truly relax and get away from it all, Oxygen is definitly the place to go! Thank you Oxygen, we had a great time and hope to return!

We only arrived here last evening, but I can already tell you that this is one of the two best hotels we have ever stayed in in CR (the other being Hotel Makanda in Manuel Antonio), and this is our 9th trip here. Although Makanda may be a close equal when it comes to the property and their rooms and services, what sets OJV aside from all others is the personal connection they make with their guests. The owners, Flora & Edwin, along with the entire staff, are here to do nothing but cater to your every wish. They are all extremely personable and interested in getting to know their guests on a level that goes well beyond that of most hotel personnel. The design of the rooms is unique and incredibly well-planned, and the property itself is secluded and very private yet easily accessible to the town of Uvita. But most of all, let me say that the dinner we had here last night was truly exceptional. Having lived in NYC for 10 years, I have been to some amazing restaurants, but the chef here is very talented. Each evening, he offers up a "surprise" 4-course meal of his creation. The set price for the evening meal is $29, and it is worth every bit of that and more. They ask you in advance for any allergies, preferences (We are pescatarian.), or other restrictions you might have. After that, you have no idea what you will get. It was such a treat to see what each course was going to be as it came out. I'll continue to post during our stay here, but after one day, we're hooked!

We could just repeat the glowing statements made by previous reviewers but want to add something else to the long list of perfectly good reasons to visit this fabulous place: it is amazing value for money. I would not know where else in Costa Rica I can get this level of sophistication, service, food and accommodation at these prices. And you don’t just get a room, you get a 750 square feet private villa including a wrap-around porch with huge sofa, an incredibly comfortable king size bed, a 10’ rain shower and a nifty entertainment system. We felt like prizewinners. After the personalized tour, we spent the first hours with our jaws dropped to the floor, wondering what the catch was: there wasn’t any. When we arrived, they had also just fixed the road to the resort, so it’s now easy enough getting to even in the tiny 4x4 we rented (make sure to bring directions though, the hotel is not signposted!). It took us 8 minutes to drive down to the costal road which made exploring the wonderful area very easy. We stayed six heavenly days and we will be back for our anniversary! Thank you Oxygen!

Of all the places we stayed on our trip to Costa Rica, I looked forward to staying at Oxygen most. The hosts, the setting, the food and the decor of the rooms and public areas were indeed truly lovely. However it is not an easy place to get to and from and may not suit everyone. I'm afraid the steep, bumpy drive put us off going out to eat, except for one of the evenings, and the pool/restaurant area communal area is a bit small so, as on a cruise ship, you have to get on with everyone. This meant we got a bit stir crazy by the end of the week and the novelty of the food wore off. Just three nights would have been perfect.

An average stay at Oxygen is 6 nights, because there is such a wide range of activities within short range, all easily accessible. National Parks Corcovado, Manuel Antonio and Caño Island are all daytrips from Oxygen. National Park Marino Ballena dictates the view from the resort and surf town Dominical and culinary town Ojochal are both within half an hour from the resort. We encourage people to enjoy everything Oxygen has to offer, but to certainly head out often and explore the surroundings. As we know the area extremely well, please allow us to assist you with your itinerary and daily planning. We are happy to, at no additional charge, arrange your tours or for example call a taxi to a nearby restaurant. Just let us know what would make your stay 5-star and we’ll arrange it!

As we are on a true jungle location (hence our name), our dirt road changes a little with the seasons: from smooth and comfortable right after we fix it, to bumpy and a little rough right before. The road has recently had its (annual) fix and is currently very easy to drive. The road is always safe (year round) and it has never taken anybody longer than 10 minutes to get down to the paved costal road (not counting stops for sloths crossing the road or other wildlife encounters!). The road up takes you away from the busy main road and into quiet and peaceful jungle territory, the reason for visiting Costa Rica’s Southern Zone for many in the first place and exactly the reason why we picked this spot for O2 –besides the amazing views and cool breezes.

Oxygen offers only 12 villas for a maximum of 2 (adults) per villa. Our clubhouse area is designed for this select number of visitors and all guests have private dining tables and sun lounges. There is no need to socialize if you choose not to (which is probably why we are a popular honeymoon location), but with so many like-minded people here there is often a fun vibe. All villas have a spacious private and covered terrace with a large couch and an in room entertainment system, so if you wish you can always retreat to the privacy of the villa.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank not just above, but all reviewers for their kind words and receiving 50 ‘excellent’ reviews in such short time after our opening. Gracias!
